Awesome Accessory to deck gate
This is the third Everbilt Door latch that I have bought within a months time. I got this Everbilt 8 in. Antique Brass Cast Iron Thumb Latch to put on a small gate on my deck that leads down a set of steps, we hardly ever keep it shut as the wind plays ball with the gate but now that i put this cool latch on it stays put and looks good doing it as well. Love these Antique Latches.

Everbilt's 8 inch antique brass thumb latch is a great detail for a country gate. The antique brass cast iron latch is heavy duty and will make for a wonderful addition to that garden gate! The close up details and description should read more of a 'hand wrought iron' and 'tree bark' texture vs. just 'antique brass' in my opinion. The 8 inch gate thumb latch is actually quite large and will be great on a larger 'single swing' gate. The included hardware includes the handle w/ thumb operated swing, the back latch bar, a catch plate, and a captive plate. The installation manual is something to be desired, however, with instruction steps that are a bit confusing. AND The drawn picture of the installed latch drawn totally WRONG. I was giggling at the image on the instruction page. As drawn, that gate cannot open since the captive plate as installed prevents the gate from opening. I think Everbilt needs to take a closer look at the instruction manual page and get a new redrawn image of an actual working gate! Overall, installing a gate latch does require some brain cells and a bit of thinking on how the latch works. Some site adjustments are always needed based on your own gate hardware and sizes. The latch itself is of a great quality and will surely last a long time and it makes a great statement with the hand-wrought antique brass finish. I recommend the latch, I'd burn the install page as it's useless as an installation guide.

The Everbilt cast iron thumb latch is a very nice product. My intent was to use it as a gate latch. Unfortunately, the design of my fence and gate would only allow the thumb latch portion to be mounted to the inside of my gate, while having the "bar" portion mounted to the outside of the gate. This would work fine, but I prefer the look of the thumb latch on the front (street) side of the fence. The reason it can only be installed this way is because the lever on the latch is only 2 3/4 inches long, whereas the thickness of my fence is closer to five inches. Hard to explain, but perhaps the pics can help. Basically mounting the thumb latch to the front of the gate would not allow the thumb lever to reach all the way to the back side of the fence where the other portion would need to be mounted. The quality of the latch is good, it is solid and attractive. I do wish that it would work in my situation. It is no fault of this product. I simply need one with a longer reach.

The EVERBILT 8 IN. ANTIQUE BRASS CAST IRON THUMB LATCH worked out extremely well on my back deck gate. The size and weight of this product is perfect for on my gate as the wind blows the gate and the gate would vibrate enough to make a lighter latch unlatch. The cast Iron material of this latch makes it durable and able to withstand our weather with the finish on the iron.

This review is for the 8 in. Antique Brass Cast Iron Thumb Latch by Everbilt. I like the size of all the components in this set and they have attempted to make the screw heads match the finish. I’m not big on the brass look however, it does have a more medieval look, if that’s the style for which you’re looking. I couldn’t find info on coating for the cast iron and it will rust over time, but I like the weathered rusty look so that’s not a negative for me and it will dull the brass look. It’s cast iron so it’s heavy-weight and sturdy. It’s not any more difficult to install than any other gate latches that I’ve had. The handle is flat so it’s not as easy to put your hand around (rounded handles are easier to grasp, for me, than flat ones).
