The Everbilt 8 in. Zinc Plated Hinge Strap hinge pin diameter is 0.45".

The attached drawing shows a hole diameter of 0.61" while the other answer from "Supplier Quality" shows 0.45" and I have seem versions of this product that have the smaller diameter. I'd suggest you measure it in the store.

            Answer This Question

When using the Everbilt 12 in. Zinc Plated Hinge Strap to swing both ways, the screw hook or bolt hook must be mounted in a manner that allows enough clearance for the gate to swing in either direction.

Don't listen to the "Support Quality". They don't know their own product. It's designed for a 3/8" bolt, which fits perfectly. 5/16" will work, but fits very loosely & will slip if forced a bit and will just keep spinning after that.

I looked into it and invention of the strap hinge is widely credited to The Romans. Other historians claim it is far older than that. I'm with them;Wouldn't you think some Iron Age tinkerer came up with it on his own? The classic way of hanging a gate. It comes punched with square holes needed to tighten it down to whatever you are going to tighten it to. You'll have to find your own carriage bolts or other attaching hardware. It's nicely galvanized or zinc-plated. You're going to need a 5/8" hook or pintel to hang your gate on, to complete your hinge. I believe you could also get by with a 1/2 inch if you have one in your spare parts.I have a small fenced area where I hide my garbage cans all week as the HOA requests. Take them out Wednesday mornings for pickup. I used to just hang a piece of lattice on there to close it. Every week I'd look at it and say,"I'm going to make a gate here someday". So one day I did. Used this hinge part on the gate. Looking at this I could see it used as a great McGyver part. You could use it to hang a small plant, or a solar lantern. You could use 2 of them to hang a sign with a rod attached to the sign and your sign would swing rustically in the breeze. You could run a rope through the hole and use it to raise or lower your flag. More than half a hinge, this is a versatile hunk of steel.

                      Heavy duty hinge straps
I’m reviewing both the 3/4 bolt hook and the 14 inch hinge straps by Everbilt as they are usually bought and used together as a unit. I got these to hang the gates I built at my farm house upstate. Both the bolt hook and the hinge straps are super heavy duty. These are in no way ‘decorative’ and were made to fully carry the weight of heavy gates. The hinge straps are rated for a working load of 150 lbs, the bolt hooks are rated for a working load of 200 lbs. So yeah, not decorative. I was te-reading the manufacture’s description for the hinges and it says ‘decorative’; I had to giggle out loud. The hinges weigh 2 pounds a piece. Heavy, thick galvanized metal. I suppose if you think heavy-duty, thick metal, galvanized for the elements as ‘decorative’, then more power to ya! The one thing I wish Everbilt made are the double-strap hinges. It would make hanging the gates from the center so much more convenient and would allow for the gate to swing both ways (giggle). The bolt hooks are fully threaded and so you can fully adjust them in the field. The bolt hooks conveniently came with nuts and washers. The 10 inch bolts I got was the right size for 4x4 pressure treated post; with some wiggle room for inside gate adjustments and room on the opposite side of the post for the washer/nut adjustments as well. I glue laminated 2x6’s on the front and back of the 4x4’s to stiffen them up and give the posts more of a presence. Keep in mind that the bolts and hinges come with differing diameter bolts and hinge holes. Be sure to check that they fit each other. The 10 inch bolt hooks are 3/4”, and they fit the 14 inch strap hinges perfectly. The 14 inch strap hinges have three square pre-punched holes that will accept 3/8 inch carriage bolts with those round button ends and square notch for an easy install. Overall, I am very happy with the Everbilt hardware; they’re a good quality and super heavy duty. Made to hang gates, and not just to look pretty either! Highly recommended.

Solid piece of hardware for your gates and other heavy hinged door needs. It is 12" long x 1.25" wide x 3/8" thick with a stated load capacity of 150 pounds. I appreciate the double zinc plating to hopefully ensure many years pf rust prevention. It works well with 5/8" SCREW hooks as you can see from the pictures. You can also use the 5/8" BOLT hooks that use 2 nuts and washers. Place 1 pair of the nut/washer on either side of your support structure in order to adjust for the correct gate sag/distance.

The 14 inch strap hinge is heavy duty and is rated for 200 lbs. It will provide a sturdy hinge assembly for your pasture gate needs. It can be used with the threaded or lag screw bolt hook sold separately for connection to your fence post. A standard assembly using an upper and lower hinge will do the trick for most applications. However, you can add a 3rd or 4th if your gate weight passes 400 lbs.

This EVERBILT hinge strap is perfect for use with wood or for wood and metal gates. The long 8" strap can be mounted on wood or metal and the screw hook easily screws into wood. The feature that I like most is the drop in hinge. Of course there are several ways to use them, but I'm thinking about an easily removable gate. One that is drop in and lift out/off, making it easy to completely remove the gate or let it swing. I've seen set ups like this and I want to try one myself.

A heavy gate strap at just over 3/16" thick. This strap has 3 square holes for holding carriage bolts in place. I've used these straps quite a bit and never really had any issues with them other than they rust after a time. This particular strap wraps around at the end to hold the pin, and it looks a little oblong. I don't think it will effect its use at all.

After replacing the hinges on my yard gate an average of once a year, I decided to go with this heavy duty hinge set , and I believe this will be that last hinge I’ll need. Between the 5/8 inch bolt that forms the post half of the hinge (shown here) and the ¼ inch thick steel the forms the gate portion I don’t see this hinge wearing out anytime soon. The length of the threaded portion also allows for plenty of adjustment for keeping the gate level.

The 14" hinge strap is heavy duty and zinc plated with two pre-drilled holes for mounting. The strap can be used to attach the gate to a fixed post, in my case, I had a poured 16" square concrete pillar. The strap could be attached using two tapcon screws and then use a post hinge. My gate was knocked down in hurricane Irma and the original brace bracket broken. The combination of the everbilt 14" hinge strap plus a gate hinge to the gate post will make a much stronger brace.

I have used the 14" Zinc Plated Hinge Strap for another project, and it works great. So, when I needed one for a smaller gate, I chose this. It mates with the 5/8" 8" Zinc Plated Bolt Hook, and works perfectly with a 6x6. Both are Double Zinc Plated and both rated for 150 pounds. The mounting holes are square; clearly designed for Carriage Bolts. The pin hole is 5/8" (see pic).
