About This Product

Dwarf Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nanus') is a popular choice for adding a touch of elegance and texture to your landscape. This low-growing, clump-forming grass-like plant features dense tufts of narrow, dark green leaves that create a lush and compact ground cover. Dwarf Mondo Grass offers several compelling reasons to consider using it in your landscape design and requires minimal care. One of the main reasons to choose Dwarf Mondo Grass for your landscape is its versatility. It can be used as a ground cover, border edging, or as an accent plant in rock gardens or containers. Its dense growth habit creates a uniform and carpet-like appearance, adding a visually appealing element to any area of your garden. Dwarf Mondo Grass is also known for its ability to thrive in challenging conditions. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types and can tolerate both sun and shade. This makes it a versatile option for areas with varying light conditions, including shady corners or under trees where other plants may struggle to grow. Its tolerance to drought and heat once established makes it suitable for water-wise landscapes as well. Caring for Dwarf Mondo Grass is relatively easy. It prefers well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil conditions, including clay and sandy soils. Water regularly during the establishment period, and once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.

Highlights

  • Mature Size: Dwarf Mondo Grass typically reaches a mature height of 2 to 4 inches, forming a dense, clump-forming ground cover.
  • USDA Growing Zone: This grass-like plant is recommended for USDA hardiness zones 6 to 11, making it suitable for a wide range of climates.
  • Sun Exposure: Dwarf Mondo Grass thrives in partial to full shade. While it can tolerate some sun, it performs best in areas with dappled or filtered sunlight. Full sun exposure may cause the leaves to yellow or scorch.
  • Watering Requirement: Regular watering is important during the establishment period to help the plants develop a strong root system. Once established, Dwarf Mondo Grass is relatively drought-tolerant and requires moderate watering. Water deeply and infrequently, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.
  • Fertilization Information: Dwarf Mondo Grass is not heavy feeders and generally does not require regular fertilization. However, you can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring if desired. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates and methods. Avoid over-fertilization, as it can lead to excessive growth and less compact clumps.
  • Pruning: Pruning requirements for Dwarf Mondo Grass are minimal. Trimming can be done in early spring to remove any damaged or discolored foliage. This helps maintain a neat appearance and promotes fresh growth. However, in most cases, Dwarf Mondo Grass requires little to no pruning.
  • Soil Preference: Dwarf Mondo Grass prefers well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. It is adaptable to both acidic and alkaline soil conditions. Adding organic matter, such as compost, to the planting area can improve soil fertility and drainage.
  • Placing a large order? Consider ordering 1-2 packs of these Dwarf Mondo grass plants to ensure that they will meet your specifications before placing the order for the entire project
  • Ships from Alabama - Customers beyond the Southeast US should place orders from early fall to late spring to avoid heat damage in transit

Questions & Answers

What are the planting instructions?

Answer This Question

For dwarf mondo grass plugs, plant them in well-draining soil in partial shade to full shade (they can tolerate some sun, especially in cooler climates). Prepare the area by removing weeds and loosening the soil before planting. Space the plugs about 4–6 inches apart depending on how quickly you want the area to fill in. Plant each plug so the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) is level with the soil surface, then gently firm the soil around it. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist while the plugs establish, usually for the first several weeks. Once established, dwarf mondo grass is low maintenance and becomes more drought tolerant. Adding a light layer of mulch between plugs can help retain moisture and reduce weeds while the plants spread and create a dense groundcover.

Do whitetail deer like to eat this grass?
    ByMay 18, 2026
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Dwarf Mondo Grass is generally considered deer resistant. Whitetail deer typically do not prefer to eat it because of its tough, grass-like foliage, making it a good groundcover option for areas where deer browsing is a concern. However, no plant is completely deer-proof. If deer populations are high or food is limited, they may still sample it. Overall, Dwarf Mondo Grass is one of the better low-maintenance choices for landscapes with deer pressure.

How far apart do we plant them?
      ByMar 28, 2026
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Dwarf Mondo Grass plugs are typically planted 4 to 6 inches apart for the best balance of coverage and establishment. Spacing plugs closer together, around 4 inches, will create a fuller, more uniform look more quickly, which is ideal for borders, pathways, or small accent areas. Spacing them farther apart, closer to 6 inches, allows the plants room to spread naturally over time and is a good option for larger areas or when planting on a budget, though it will take longer for the plants to fill in. With proper watering and care, Dwarf Mondo Grass will gradually knit together into a dense, low-growing mat.

How fast does it grow and spread ?
        ByAug 21, 2024
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Dwarf Mondo Grass grows and spreads at a slow to moderate rate, typically taking a few years to form a dense, low-growing mat. It can spread by underground rhizomes, gradually filling in spaces, but it isn’t an aggressive grower. Patience is key, as it may take some time to achieve full coverage in your garden or landscape.

          Does it spread
          ByJul 4, 2024
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Yes, Dwarf Mondo Grass spreads slowly through underground runners, forming dense, low-growing mats. This makes it an excellent ground cover option for gardens and landscapes. However, it is not invasive and can be easily managed.

                Answer This Question

For Dwarf Mondo grass plugs, plant them about 4 to 6 inches apart to allow them to spread and create a dense ground cover. Using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 14-14-14 can help promote healthy growth. Apply the fertilizer according to the package instructions, typically in the spring and fall. Ensure the soil stays consistently moist until the plugs are well-established.

                  Success! Dwarf Mondo
I was scared to order plants online, especially since we’re in South Florida that has an abundance of nurseries for plants. So excited that we gambled. They came right away, detailed tracking and arrived earlier than expected. And they came packaged excellent in trays wrapped in plastic with well watered plants.

Buy these in the store for healthier plant
I got these in the mail and they were looking pretty sad. I planted them right away and thought for sure I would lose half of them because they quickly turned brown. But lo and behold, they have some green left and I think they will recover, slowly. These are tough. Had me very worried. That said, next time I will only buy in the store.

                        Happy Dwarf Mondo Owner
As to be expected, the carrier delivered the box upside down from what the heavy duty cardboard box said to do (“LIVE PLANTS: KEEP BOX RIGHT SIDE UP”) Fortunately, only some soil was lost out of the pots. Mondo Grass is super hardy and shipping had no ill affect on the plants. The plants are quite large and I was able to divid them quit a bit (at times four or more times per pot). This gave me much more coverage than I originally thought I needed. Out of 108 I bought I had 33 pots left over from my project. A little pricey but the saying “you get what you paid for” holds true to these Dwarf Mondo beauties. The picture is dated two weeks after they were first planted in the hottest part of the year here, August (zone 9b; California). They all survived 111 degree temperatures ( in 100% shade). I would had thought there would of been a lot leaf burn, considering they came from wet humid Alabama to hot dry California, but very little occurred. Definitely keep them watered and out of the Sun if your live in a hot dry climate. Happy planting!
