Q:Are the fortress planks a composite material, and if so what is the make up of these materials
by|Feb 21, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. The foam core reinforced with bamboo is 45% lighter than composite decking making it easy to work with. It expands and contracts about 25% less than other PVC decks giving you a more consistent, uniform look. Each board is encapsulated in an acrylic polymer that delivers outstanding UV performance, so your deck won’t fade like other PVC products; and it provides the highest non-slip rating.

As with all lumber, pay attention to dimensions of the product. .945" thick, 5.5" wide, and 8' long. Given the price, for an actual deck vs the furniture I am making, I would use the hidden fastener version. Each board weighs about 13 lbs so they are pretty heavy compared to what I was expecting. The appearance really is beautiful. At such a premium price, the warranty would heavily sway me before I covered an entire deck with it. The product has a 25 year residential / 10 year commercial warranty which is transferable one time in the first 5 years. The warranty covers the material against defect such as rot or splintering and it protects against staining from a very short list of substances as long as you promptly have a professional company remove the stain (at your expense) and it still remains. Any substance outside of the ones listed do not seem to be included in the warranty. The warranty does NOT cover against hail which it describes as an act of god (force majeure). I thought we had a better understanding of hail ;). They also do not cover wear and tear which is a little concerning since you don't want the deck to become smooth and worn out over time. Having coverage or guarantee against wear and tear similar to some flooring products would give me much more confidence in the long term. I am going to use these two boards to build some small tables and furniture to see how it last in the long term.

Fortress BP deck board are some of the best you can use on a deck that will last decades. We built our porch stairs out of pressure treated pine and faced them with these deck boards. They are very sturdy but do need a good frame to sit on. They will sag if the joists are too far apart - we used the standard 16 inch spacing and there are no problems over time. The top finish is very durable. The bottoms are finished flat and with deck screws, they won't budge. We left a 1/4 inch gap between boards to shed rain. Highly recommend!

Receive these in the mail today and I'm surprised it's only two boards for $122 That's a bit much perboard when you have a large deck I feel like there might be better options out there price wise now all that being said it's very nice material it looks like real aged wood it's got a proper texture and everything it's nice and thick it's a true one-inch thickness by 5.5-in wide very heavy and durable but I still can't justify $122 for just two boards in a pack

I chose the Foretress Apex Alaskan Driftwood in a 2-pack to be placed on top of a pallet that sits outside my camper. It prevents splinters and closes the wider gaps that caused me to twist my ankle on occasion. I used the matching deck screws to complete the look. The pallet had nails that would pop up and hurt to step on. No more worry of the with the deck screws.

The Fortress Apex Alaskan Driftwood Grey deck boards are VERY realistic-looking boards on the top side. The embossed wood-grain pattern is three-dimensional and shaded perfectly. The underside is a smooth brown plastic -- nobody will see it if it's the underside of a deck. I used the boards to make an 8' x 4' raised bed, along with eight of Home Depot's Oldcastle Tan Brown Planter concrete block corners. VERY easy to put together. Didn't even need rebar to keep them in place.

used these boards to replace the 1"x6" boards that had dry rot on my garage surround. They are great replacements and look really good.

Lighter weight option for composite decking
I used these boards to build a driveway gate, so decided to go with the PVC option since it is lighter weight than regular composite decking. I was surprised at the nice wood-look. I would say these look very similar to composite decking. Easy to drill and easy to cut.
