Q:What is the best way to: a) Sharpen the small silver pruning blade? and b) Straighten it? - it is out of alignment and now catches on the black part of the cutter after use on a tough, thin branch.

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for contacting Fiskars. Here is our favorite way to sharpen a pruning blade. 1. Secure the pruners in a bench vise. If you have a bench vise, you should use it to secure the pruners. 2. Position the file. You will use a medium or coarse diamond hand file to sharpen the pruning shears. Position the file against the cutting blade. 3. Draw the file along the contour of the blade. Using one smooth stroke, draw the file along the contour of the blade. 4. File until a sharp edge forms. Continue to file in single, smooth strokes until a sharp edge forms on the blade of your pruning shears. 5. File off burrs on the blade’s backside. Once you are done sharpening the blades of your pruning shears, you will want to remove any burrs that accrued on the blade. 6. Finish with linseed oil. Once you have sharpened your pruning shears, you will need to wipe linseed oil over the blades to prevent rust.

        What happened to Fiskars’s quality?
I had the pole pruner for years and I love it. I needed something longer and decided to go for the 12feet extendable one because is much lighter that the 14 feet. I managed to saw 2 branches and prune 3 tiny ones before giving up. The saw gets the job done but is flimsy and bends quite a bit, increasing the time it takes to successfully saw a relatively small branch. The reason why is going back is the clipper. The first branch was fine, on the second one it got stuck and I had to tear it out. Turns out the cord comes out of the pulley groves causing the clipper to get stuck closed. I did reset the rope and tried again, and it got stuck. I had to take a ladder to cut the branch with the locked pruner using the pole, force it open readjusting the rope. Extremely disappointed

          Great Tool !
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Fiskars Extendable Pole Saw & Pruner is a great tool for cutting them branches that can not be reached. We have trees hanging over our driveway that need to be cut. This pole saw & pruner is extendable. You can extend up to 12 feet.It has a hook that you place over the branch and just pull the cord and it easily prunes off the branch. It also has a saw that is very sharp for thicker branches.Easy to use. My old way to prune, would be pull the branch down, hold it and try to prune. This makes it so much easier for me.

            Works Great!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We live in Florida and have a few Palm trees in our yard. The fronds die off and hang on the tree, which is unsightly. This is exactly what we needed to remove the dead fronds. This extends to 12 ft and is easy to handle and lightweight. It also has a double locking system for secure control. The blade is sharp and easy to adjust. It is rust resistant also. I am happy with this.

              Cut with pride
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Are you tired of those low hanging branches that smack you in the face when trying to cut the lawn or even playing with your fur babies in the yard. Or those branches that tend to lingerie over your house? Well I have the perfect solution for you. This extendable pole saw is durable and well made to clear out those unwanted tree branches. It's easy to extent and the blade is outstanding. It has allowed me to feel at ease in and outside my home. No need to send in the professionals any longer as this will get those branches. When we talk branches we are not talking about branches that are the width of the tree in itself. This is made for more of the smaller branches. I definitely love it and so simply to use. I would say this would make an excellent gift as well. No cons at this time.

Easy to Use for High to Reach Branches
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This pole saw has been immensely helpful. We have a huge thick vine wrapped around a gorgeous tree on our property. We wanted to remove it. We were able to use the pole saw to cut through the very thick base, probably around 6 inches in diameter, and then used the pruner portion of the pole saw to cut down individual branches of the vine. This pole extends to 12 feet, so combined with my husbands already 6 foot stature and a mini ladder, we were able to safely remove the whole vine. The blades were sharp and the pruner was very easy to use. The lock helped to keep the pole extended. I do wish this came with some kind of cover or case for the blade.

                  Saved our tree!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] There is a huge dead branch in the middle of our tree and I got this pole saw to cut it out and hopefully bring some more life back into it. I ended up with the 12 foot model but almost wish I would have gotten the 16 foot. My husband just needed to get on a ladder to get some of the taller branches which wasn’t a huge deal. It worked great cutting away the dead branches as it is sturdy and super easy to put together. I also love that when it telescopes it locks into place for safety. The smaller thinner branch trimmer is nice and high quality. Maybe my one gripe is that I wish it came with a case or a sleeve to put the saw in when not in use. I worry that my kids will grab it in the garage and hurt themselves on the exposed saw. I may take it off when I am not using it just to be safe. Regardless, I would recommend this; it has definitely saved our tree!!

Excellent design and very light weight!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have a large yard with lots of gorgeous trees and bushes that need to be trimmed and pruned on a regular basis. I usually love gardening, but I am not willing to put myself in harms way by climbing up a ladder in order to reach high branches and limbs. The Fiskars extendable tree pruner enabled me to reach the high branches in a simple and safe manner without having to hire someone to do it for me. It's also very light weight, less than five lbs, which is a huge plus since I'm a short female with a small build. The tool allowed me to prune for an extended period of time without taking multiple rest breaks because it's not excessively heavy or cumbersome. It also has a mechanically independent cutting action, making it easy to use despite my size or physical strength. The design is fantastic and it's very durable and well made. The blade is SHARP and I was able cut clean through tough branches within seconds. The pruning stik extends up to twelve feet and it's easy to adjust. I love that it has a rope free design so I don't have to worry about constant snags and tangles. I also enjoy knowing that it has a lifetime warranty so I know I'm getting a product that will last. I highly recommend this tool for those who want powerful cutting action in a safe and efficient way. It's a high quality pruner that will save you lots of time, money and energy when pruning your trees. If you do yard work then do yourself a favor and get this pruner.

                      Great Tool
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We received this fiskars - Extendable Pole Saw & Pruner (7'?12') and it is great. We have large trees and often have a time trimming them because they are so tall. This extension pole has a blade on the end of it and gives us the access to branches we didn’t have access to before. This is a great tool and we recommend to everyone that has trees or bushes to prune. It’s WONDERFUL.

                        Absolute garbage
I got through sawing about 10 1.5" limbs, and she held up just fine. Good reach, good saw blade. However, after pruning only about 7-10 1/2" limbs with the trimming attachment, the pole snapped. It was only extended to about 10', and it snapped right at the head of the cheap fiberglass inner pole. It also could use a mooring cleat for the string, as it's tough to manage while sawing.

                          Does the job
I haven't had this tool for long. I bought it to remove some high branches infested with bagworms. The lopper is smooth and easy and does a good job with small branches up to an inch. You do not have to operate it with the saw blade attached. In fact, the blade can get a bit snarled if you are dealing with dense growth. On the other hand, it is very sharp and barb-y which makes it great for pulling down trimmed branches that get fowled on the way down. Hint - the pull handle is on a long, soft, strong cord. To adjust the position, just slide the handle to where you want it, then loop the remaining cord around and through the upper part of the cord - like making a simple overhand knot, but with the handle being in the center of the knot. It is easy to move up and down but as long as your hand is over the cord when you grip the handle, it will not slip.
