Q:Can I use this welder on 2.25" mild steel exhaust tubing?

        Answer This Question

A:  Yes, you should be able to, just turn it down. I was able to weld the exhaust hanger back onto my muffler.

        by|May 4, 2024

A:  Yes you can. Practice on some scrap tubing for correct settings, as on mine it seems that I need to set voltage and feed higher than the standard recommended values on the info decal.  I really like the welder for what it is.

          by|May 26, 2023

A:  The Forney 140FC-i, is rated for 1/4" welding with a single pass. It is possible to weld thicker material but, will take beveling and multiple passes to do so. Thank you for your question!

I'm an inexperienced welder and decided to focus on Fluxcore. It's the least expensive without the complexity of using shielding gas. This is a great unit for the price and seems to be ruggedly built. Now I can study the effects of various voltage and wire feed settings as I lay beads and learn to control my speed and tip to work distance.

So Simple to get going on
For me this is the perfect light duty machine to pair with my old large heavy buzz box Century welder. Turns out I'm using the Forney the most. 120V is really the way to go for most DIY welders who weld 1/8 to 3/16 metal regularly. Like all welding it all falls on the user to get the settings correct. Once you get the setting right, it is like magic.

I am an extreme novice when it comes to welding, but I love tools and diy projects. My truck needed a new cab mount welded in and I figured I could find many other uses for this portable welder. I did a lot of comparison with other welders. This one fit my needs the best and Homedepot.com had the best price I could find. I found it to be very easy to set up, as well as easy to move around and use any where that there is a regular 110 electric outlet. Even though my welding skills are very limited I was not only able to replace the cab mount on my truck with this machine but I have also used it to pull out dents from my son's car door. Love this machine, and I think I made a very good purchase.

The Forney Easy Welder was shipped in a very attractive glossy white double walled cardboard box with black lettering and the Forney green accents. The product was held within the box utilizing a styrene foam base and top plate with a minimum of 1.5” air gap. All the pieces were overwrapped in poly bags. A quick guide for wire feed speed and voltage settings are affixed on the inside of the cabinet for reference. The manual and reference materials were very easy to read and understand. The manual also has clear pictures to assist in familiarizing yourself with the operation of the welder. The controls on the welder were also clearly labeled and easy to use even with my welding gloves on. The wire spool access compartment has a panel that is very easy to open using a spring-loaded finger latch. The door is hinged at the top and swings open and stays out of the way when loading or making adjustments. This was the first time I have used a wire feed welder and I had no problem adjusting the spool holder, loading the wire into the drive and adjusting the feed-roller tension. It only took about 3 minutes to convert to a 2-pound spool and feed the wire to the end of the welding tip. The ground clamp has hardened chisel like teeth to help ensure a good electrical contact. The clamp opens about 2” to affix to your base material. The ground lead is positive polarity and is about 6 feet long and very flexible. There is a woven copper strap connecting both jaws of the clamp to ensure electrical contact. The power unit is lightweight and portable. The handle on the top also functions as a storage loom for the mains and welding leads. I used the welder for more than 3 hours with a few short breaks. During my session I had no problems or faults with the welder. I was using on the lowest setting and I still burned a few holes in the thin sheet metal I was working with. The only complaint I have is length of the main power cord. I suggest buying the recommended 25-foot, 12-gauge extension cord along with the welder.
