Questions & Answers

I do not have an external vent. Am I able to use this microwave?

Asked by: Tom
The installation instructions says it can discharge back into the kitchen. BUT Code required to vent it outside if you have a gas range, to prevent being killed by the CO2

Can I replace the underneath bulbs with LED's? I have had to replace the incandescents at least 4 times now in the past year (haven't even had the unit for a full year). The last 2 times the bulbs blew out and were broken off at the base. It's been a real pain.

I have had the same problem with the lights. My microwave stopped working all together after 2 years. There is definitely something wrong wrong with this unit. The old one which was also a GE lasted 16 years. I don't think I'll buy another GE microwave.

Key pad has no light? Does this model have lit pad?

No phamplet in box .
Asked by: Cat
This does NOT have a keypad. GE Customer Service told me to "turn on the kitchen overhead light". Uh-huh --- sure!!! (Most kitchen lights are closer to the center of the room to keep them out of the steam coming off the stove top.) Then she told me to turn on the light that illuminates the stove top - Darlin', that light points in the WRONG DIRECTION! Seriously, my wife and I have to use a flashlight to see the keypad. Seems to me like this is something that GE should have thought of before they sold it. Home Depot sales people didn't know about this missing "feature" (also known as a REQUIREMENT) either. It doesn't help when this is displayed without being connected in the store - one just assumes that it will light up, and I never thought to ask. We are going to return this microwave. I'm going to take advantage of HD's 48-hour return policy, and I'm going to encourage them to stop buying this unit from GE.

February 2015 we redid our entire kitchen,I was excited about purchasing this microwave and couldn't wait to use it. It's lovely and it has the components I wanted, with said, good luck with the "everlasting" deal! it's not equipped to last longer then perhaps 3-5 yrs. :( I loved everything about it; 30 secs button, the express cook buttons, the little light underneath, etc. A year after purchasing (only my husband and I at home) I noticed scratches not sure how when I use a soft cloth with dish soap to wipe it down. Two years after purchasing; the handle broke off at the bottom, see pic where it's ducked taped and also superglued 2x. About 6 months ago, it started to blow the circuit (only other thing plugged on same wall is our stove). I did some troubleshooting and just plain gave up! I'm looking into purchasing a different make. :/ disappointed, waste of quality and money.

Last week I came home and noticed that there was no power to it, we did trouble shoot and found the fuse went out, so we replaced the fuse ourselves for $2.88 vs $109 service charge. After that the microwave was up and running I come home last night from work and guess what, no power to it again! and guess what we had to replace again... the fuse. So my husband did do some trouble shooting and found that the fuse goes bad when opening the door while food is being heated, we never had this issue before until recently. If we wait until the food is done being heated and microwave turns off after the timer is over then there is no problem however if we open the door while being heated it blows the fuse. I know this is a safety feature but I didn't think it would blow the fuse everytime! Im not sure if this is whats fully causing the fuse to blow every time since we only did it once but after all the time spent on it if it happens another time we will just end up getting a new one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Number three and counting... I really like the features, but the durability is a problem. The first GE microwave we owned lasted eight years, so when it stopped working, we decided to buy another GE. Since GE had discontinued that model, we bought one with similar features and style. Unfortunately, the heating element went out during the fourth year. The heating element cost a bit more than half of the replacement cost, so we cut our potential loses and bought another one. The 5 year extended warranty cost more than a replacement, so no extended warranty. Now, another four years down the road and the heating element on that one goes out. Still no extended warranty due to cost. Now we're on our third, hoping to get a few more years. You are probably asking yourself, why keep buying the same appliance when it keeps breaking in a few years, and the answer is simple, "mounting". There are multiple holes in the cabinet and wall from earlier microwaves, maybe the house is cursed, so buying the same model at least limits any additional holes. We really do like the microwave, we just wish it was more durable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost excellent This GE microwave oven has just one major area of aggravation: the control buttons, which fall short of the mark in two ways. Since they lack any sort of back lighting, the timer and function buttons (on the right side of the oven) are very difficult to see clearly at night. And there are a lot of these buttons, so it takes a while to remember automatically which ones are which. Keep a small flashlight at hand. The other drawback also pertains to those buttons: They require a large amount of pressure to respond. If you have arthritis or have fingers that are otherwise sensitive, you will likely find pressing those buttons to be uncomfortable. All of that said, this is a very smooth, capable microwave with plenty of power, an efficient pair of lights (two brightness settings) to illuminate your gas or electric stove, and a solid feel to the door as you open and close it.

Starting having issues with the surface lights (the ones to illuminate the stove top) going out after hardly any use at all after 5 months. Contacted GE, they sent new bulbs. After a few months, bulbs out again. Replaced bulbs several times. Finally realized something was up with the wiring, because if I jiggled the light sockets, the lights would work. I took off the bottom panel to look at the wiring, it looked like it was singed. I contacted GE, now that it was just out of warranty, they said it would cost around $100 for someone to look at it, with no guarantee of a fix. I declined. So, we just didn't have the lights to use anymore. April 2019, the whole micro shorted out, sparks and all. The manufacture date on the unit is August 2016, so not even three years from manufacture. Impressive GE!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice unit! almost as good as the first one our GE microwave that was in the house when it was built took a dive after 11 years of service. after much review, of other makes and models we ultimately chose this one because of the great pricing and good reviews as well as it would fit perfectly in our spot over the stove as the other one had. it works very well with 2 minor exceptions as follows : The number and function keyboard is very hard to see in the evenings, and the door of the unit feels more cheaply constructed than the first one we owned . The unit does give gentle reminder beeps —at a much lower decibel than its predecessor, Which we are used to and I appreciate so we won’t forget what sitting in the microwave. we were told that the one-year warranty would not cover a service visit or replacement so we purchased the three year extended warranty and I’m hoping this unit lasts much longer than that . my husband found the installation to be fairly easy with the included template and wall bracket. overall I’m very happy with this unit so far but it’s only been a week .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Micro wave it's a GE There is a trick to drill holes for the top of the Microwave. The template sometimes doesn't match properly so go to the home depot and get two screws that exactly fit the top of the microwave. When you get home take the purchased screws and remove heads and sharpen the head end of the screw. When you have installed the back bracket on the wall. Screw in the screws so sharpened heads stick out. Swing the Microwave on the bracket up to the cabinet so the screws mark the bottom of the cabinet. Now you have an exact mark where the screws go. Use a small drill bit to drill to drill up into the cabinet . Then from the top drill with proper sized drill. This will allow you not to chip the inside of the cabinet. The holes now are where they should be. Your won't complain about chipping inside of the cabinet. This works with no additional misplaced holes ( your wife or SO won't keep reminding you about the chipping. Great Microwave and looks good over stove. Ed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great, Easy Install Installation went far easier than I thought. I had hope to reuse the install bracket from another GE Microwave this one was replacing, but I guess it changed after twelve years. At any rate, after installing the new bracket and drilling a couple of new holes, this baby went in without a hitch. It is much quieter ( both the vent fan and the microwave operation ) than the old one. It also gives a lot better surface light on the stove. My wife loves it. Only negative might be the display. They have changed the display to a bright blue led light, and it tends to blur at a distance. I preferred the old green led lighting. It was slightly larger, and easily read from across the room.
