Questions & Answers

I do not have an external vent. Am I able to use this microwave?

Asked by: Tom
The installation instructions says it can discharge back into the kitchen. BUT Code required to vent it outside if you have a gas range, to prevent being killed by the CO2

Can I replace the underneath bulbs with LED's? I have had to replace the incandescents at least 4 times now in the past year (haven't even had the unit for a full year). The last 2 times the bulbs blew out and were broken off at the base. It's been a real pain.

I have had the same problem with the lights. My microwave stopped working all together after 2 years. There is definitely something wrong wrong with this unit. The old one which was also a GE lasted 16 years. I don't think I'll buy another GE microwave.

Key pad has no light? Does this model have lit pad?

No phamplet in box .
Asked by: Cat
This does NOT have a keypad. GE Customer Service told me to "turn on the kitchen overhead light". Uh-huh --- sure!!! (Most kitchen lights are closer to the center of the room to keep them out of the steam coming off the stove top.) Then she told me to turn on the light that illuminates the stove top - Darlin', that light points in the WRONG DIRECTION! Seriously, my wife and I have to use a flashlight to see the keypad. Seems to me like this is something that GE should have thought of before they sold it. Home Depot sales people didn't know about this missing "feature" (also known as a REQUIREMENT) either. It doesn't help when this is displayed without being connected in the store - one just assumes that it will light up, and I never thought to ask. We are going to return this microwave. I'm going to take advantage of HD's 48-hour return policy, and I'm going to encourage them to stop buying this unit from GE.

1.6 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave in Stainless Steel is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 11615.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basic microwave, works well Our old GE microwave finally blew its magnetron after many years of service. We don't really "cook" in a microwave and don't need endless bells and whistles, so we decided to replace it with GE's latest lower-end model. It's very similar, of course, but I've had to adjust to a few unexpected differences with the new microwave: 1) the clock light is *much* brighter--bright white instead of green 2) the interior light is much dimmer 3) the buttons seem to require more pressure 4) the timer and cook time buttons are next to each other; I have to learn to hit the right one 5) the shield behind the door's window is more dense; I can't see inside easily These are all differences, not demerits, and I probably wouldn't notice them if I hadn't used the previous model for so long. We're happy with our choice, because we got all the features we wanted at quite a reasonable price. It's worked well ever since we bought it, and we don't regret our decision. We hope this GE microwave lasts as long as our previous one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value, easy install We bought this to replace a 1987 GE over the range Spacemaker, which still worked properly after all these years, but the clock was running too fast, and the interior paint was flaking off. All it ever had done to it was have a circuit board replaced, about ten years ago for $90. Not bad for a 32 year old appliance. This new one has much more advanced features, was larger, but also considerably lighter. It fit the space of the old one perfectly, without a whole lot of fuss or preparation. venting and electrical were standard enough that no modifications to the existing were required. Some new mounting holes required drilling, and a new mount plate had to be installed, but went fairly smooth. So far it is operating well, and seems to be slightly faster than the old one. the wifey is satisfied, so I am also. Will it last another 32 years? We'll see. The price was right for just a basic microwave, so we feel we got a good deal either way.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple, easy to use This recent purchase was a replacement for an identical unit which, unfortunately, lasted slightly more than 3 years. I think the transformer may have died and the cost of a new one exceeded the price of the whole new unit. I chose another GE because it fit exactly back where the old unit had been and I didn't have to change the mounting brackets. The instruction manual is not perfectly clear on a few installation topics but because I had prior experience with the installation it was easier to figure out. Overall I've been satisfied with the unit as a whole and parts are available if you can fix things yourself The older unit had problems with the light bulbs over the stove, they'd burn out too soon and unless you have long thin fingers they are difficult to unscrew and replace. I hope the new one has added more space to get the bulb out much more easily. Time will tell. Otherwise, as I said before, It looks good and works well

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Micro wave it's a GE There is a trick to drill holes for the top of the Microwave. The template sometimes doesn't match properly so go to the home depot and get two screws that exactly fit the top of the microwave. When you get home take the purchased screws and remove heads and sharpen the head end of the screw. When you have installed the back bracket on the wall. Screw in the screws so sharpened heads stick out. Swing the Microwave on the bracket up to the cabinet so the screws mark the bottom of the cabinet. Now you have an exact mark where the screws go. Use a small drill bit to drill to drill up into the cabinet . Then from the top drill with proper sized drill. This will allow you not to chip the inside of the cabinet. The holes now are where they should be. Your won't complain about chipping inside of the cabinet. This works with no additional misplaced holes ( your wife or SO won't keep reminding you about the chipping. Great Microwave and looks good over stove. Ed

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New Microwave My son & I just installed this Microwave yesterday evening. Had to make a few modifications from the previous Micro install, but nothing serious. The instructions with the new Micro were very good. Strongly suggest you read and re-read your installation manual. Follow the instructions and you'll be fine, unless you want to start drilling wrong holes into your back wall and cabinet. We were fine, and had no problems, but as the old adage goes, measure twice, drill once...LOL. My only complaint is that I wish the touch control panel was backlit . The panel is black, and the lettering for the different touch pad options are a faint greyish/white...not a good combination with the black background. Hard to see! Don't think the Design folks thought this one thru. Otherwise, the unit looks good, and worked well boiling a cup of water to test. NOTE: If it hadn't been for the backlit issue I mentioned, I would have rated 5 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Difficult to remove vent cover Right out of the box this was a pain. I configured the unit to vent through the front of the microwave. I could not remove the vent cover to install the charcoal filter. I removed the two screws ( per manual). The left side of the vent would not break free. The root cause of the problem was that a Burr was created when the screw was installed. The Burr bit into the plastic table of the vent cover. I had to make a tool from stainless steel shim stock. I bent a corner of the shim stock so it could slide between the burr and the plastic. It took more force than I would have imagined, but I was able wiggle the shim stock enough to free up the vent. The paper template to locate the holes on the underside of the cabinet was a pain to tape into position. I ended up using the template to locate the holes on a 2x4 . The 2x4 was used to fill the gap between the bottom of the cabinet and top top of the microwave. It may help to glue the paper template to cardboard, then tack the cardboard in place to locate your drill your holes. Other than that, it seems to be a nice microwave.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This GE microwave was a weak performer right out of the box. It worked for about 18 months, then ... This GE microwave was a weak performer right out of the box. It worked for about 18 months, then died. It has an internal fuse (15-20 amps, 125 volts) that I replaced at the suggestion of a repair tech. Replacing the fuse requires you to remove the microwave from over the range and partially disassemble the microwave (remove the outer cover - you need a Torx security bit to do this - I managed with a standard Torx and vice grips, but be advised). It ran once, until I tried to use the turntable, then it blew the fuse again. I replaced the fuse a second time (yes, all the fun of removing, disassembly, re-assembly, and re-installing, plus cost of the fuses) AND turned the turntable off. It ran for another couple weeks then blew the fuse yet again. Conclusion: This GE microwave is good for wasting your money, taking up space in your trash, but not for cooking. Oh, and it's good at producing profits for GE, of course, because being a piece of junk you buy it again and again. Or not ... According to a reliable source, Whirlpool and Frigidaire are more reliable brands ... We'll see.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Microwave works. Underpowered fan, bad display. The microwave works great and seems powerful. Note that the mounting bracket for the microwave is a U-shape, so if you only have a single stud where you're mounting it you'll need to drill additional larger holes for toggle bolts. This was not very fun to do into porcelain tile! Our previous microwave had two horizontal brackets, so it was mounted into the same stud twice. We have the microwave venting to the outside from the top, and the fan is loud but weak. Had I known the fan was this weak, I would have considered more expensive models. The time display is pretty bad (see photo). The ":" between minutes/seconds (or hours/minutes when displaying the clock) touches the numbers. It makes the whole microwave look cheap and shoddy. We've opted to *not* configure the clock on the microwave because the time display looks so bad. Overall, the microwave function works great, the fan is weak and loud, and the display displays time poorly. If you need an affordable microwave and care little about the fan functionality or how the display looks, then this is a fine model to choose.
