Questions & Answers

Does the water line freeze on this model

I ask this question because the fridge I have right now "GSH25JFTABB" the water line freezes and i have to shut down the fridge to make it work again. I scheduled a service appointment to have this fixed. The tech gave an estimate of over $500.00 to fix the issue. Want to make sure I do not run into this issue again if I buy this model.
Asked by: Frustrated
It may not be deliberately designed to freeze but it is not designed to NOT-freeze. As a band aid, it appears GE added an electric heater to the water pipe to prevent this. I believe my heater worked for 5 years then failed abruptly. No freezing occurred during he first 5 years but then it would freeze up and stay frozen until it thawed it out with application of warm air, which takes time because of the insulation. Then it would freeze up again. I tried insulating on the inside of the door as another has suggested. I used bubble wrap. That worked well but seemed too makeshift so I made the mistake of trying a "better" solution. I talked to GE and was offered the $500 solution - a new door! It would probably freeze up too. I SUGGEST TO NOT TRY THE FOLLOWING! I opened up the door and split the Polyurethane foam insulation to separate the inner from the outer. Then I dug and found the electric tracers. I replaced then with new non-OEM (GE did not offer any) tracers and verified that heating occurred. Also, I installed a rope made of copper mesh to conduct heat from the outside of the door to the trouble spot. Then reassembled the door and injected some PU-foam. It worked! In fact the copper rope seemed to do the trick. I did not have to turn the electric tracers on. The job however was a lot more difficult than it may sound. Slitting the PU-foam was very difficult and very messy. Putting it back together was even worse and evenly injecting PU-foam is much more difficult than it may sound. It would have been better to simply cutout a section of the plastic door liner to install the new tracers then to tape the section back in and even better to have just accepted that the water/ice dispenser no longer worked. better still GE should design out this persistent problem. The rest of the refrigerator/freezer was working well but now the door is distorted and the freezer door seal is no longer effective. We are now buying a new one. This GE model popped up and appears to be the best value but we have learned the hard way and will consider alternatives.

Quality is lacking with some insulation coming out the back and some dents and dings, also on the back and not from shipping as the box it came in was in 100% good condition. The stainless steel doors do not cover the top part of the door entirely, this is a clear indication to me of "cutting corners" to save a few dollars. I understand that you normally do not see the top of the door but I DO! One CAUTION that I have is when I began to remove the tape and styrofoam shipping stabilizers there was one in the freezer that was difficult to remove as the styrofoam was wedged in between two panels. When I finally removed it, I noticed that the drip pan (I'm guessing it is the drip pan under the coils) was protruding outward and uneven. So I thought all I needed to do was push it back in, WRONG! I sliced my thumb in trying to do so. (See attached photos) Other than that, I like this fridge. The ice maker is great compared to other models I have owned and so far no big issues.

We bought this refrigerator to replace a 15 year old refrigerator that was slowly dying. The refrigerator was delivered and plugged in. Within the first week the refrigerator started making a horrible vibrating noise from the fan in the freezer. It sounds like a vibrating cell phone on a hard surface. We called GE and they did some trouble shooting over the phone, their tips didn't work. Contacted ge they sent a repair man out. The repair man said the fan needed to be "balanced". He balances the fan and leaves, a few days later the refrigerator resumed making the horrible noise. Another call to GE resulted in yet a nother tech coming out, the second tech replaced a $140 fan in the freezer and left. After a couple of days the refrigerator again resumed making the horrible noise. GE refuses to replace the refrigerator that has been repaired as many months as has been owned. I am now pursuing a formal complaint against GE on this issue. Save yourself the trouble and look at other brands.

It came up to desired temperatures in both the fridge and freezer faster than expected. It keeps food at the correct temperature. Produces a lot of ice! Occasionally, crushed ice comes out with cubed. I can live with that. I Wish it had more shelf space Our old GE seemed to have a lot more open space although having the same dimensions. Perhaps the shelves have been made shorter to accommodate the larger door bins that were not on older models? All in all I really like it. I recommend using Weiman silver cleaner/polish wipes. It makes it shine and helps a great deal to prevent finger prints. So far a great purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good basic fridge, but slow ice maker We bought this based on the good reviews and because of Costco's great service and return policies. Needed a white side-by-side for the space and settled on this since there weren't many white models to choose from. So far, seems decent except for some annoying features: 1) the ice maker is very slow. We considered a service call but after reading the manual, it's "normal" to make 100-130 cubes in 24 hours. After doing the counting, 130 cubes really isn't that much and can't keep up with the demands of a busy shore house where ice is a prized possession. 2) The water dispenser is soooo slow. Filling up a glass takes so long, we usually opt for the Brita pitcher we keep in the fridge. 3) LED light is dim. I thought because it was LED, it'd be super bright, but that's not the case here. Other than those three issues, it seems to be fine so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleased with purchase We’ve had the refrigerator for two days and we’re pleased with the way it performs and looks! No fingerprints as I had in my older stainless steel refrigerator. We got the slate model. After reading reviews I was afraid it would be loud when running but it’s very quiet. It barely makes a sound when the water fills to make ice. Anyway it’s operating as it should and we’re pleased with how quiet it is and not having to fight fingerprints is a plus! I hope it keeps running for many years to come.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loud Fridge This thing is loud! I called GE to ask what's up and was simply told "that's how we make them now". I asked if the french door models (exchange) had the same compressor and fans and was told by Shawna "we don't have that information. All we have is very basic info, same as you." I asked who knew this info and was told "nobody here"! I Called GE parts department, they transferred me back to....Shawna. What a joke!! Other issues you should know before buying this Fridge: Very poor quality drawers that stick when opened. Every time you open the fridge it rolls forward, can't find any wheel locks. Ice maker is loud and always serves crushed ice even when cubes are selected. Ice spills on floor because dispenser is too wide for average glass. When dispensing water: cup must be help up high or water shoots onto floor. Guests always make a mess. Doors don't open smoothly narrow shelves Made in Mexico Positives: Slate color is nice. Buy something else. I want my 1998 Kenmore back!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good. Not so confident it is... So far so good. Not so confident it is worth the price though. I bought this on sale and it was still over $1,000. Some insulation coming out of the corner on the back along with a few dents and dings (Not from shipping as the box was in 100% condition) indicates poor QC and/or sloppy work in my opinion. The stainless steel doors do not cover the top entirely which is another clear indication of "cutting corners". I understand you don't normally see the top, but I do. Also, as a CAUTION and another indication of poor QC and craftsmanship, be careful of what I believe to be the drip pan in the freezer. When I was removing ALL of the approximately 1 million pieces of tape and styrofoam shipping stabilizers, this one piece of styrofoam that was taped in between two panels in the freezer was very difficult to remove and once I did, I noticed that the drip pan was at an angle so I figured that I just needed to push it back behind the panel. Well, I was WRONG! When I used my thumb to push back this thin aluminum pan, it sliced right into my thumb. Not a good start. Other than that, it is working good so far and the ice maker is the best one I have had in a long time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great energy saver! I purchased the refrigerator for my first home purchase. I liked the water, ice and crush ice feature in the door. I loved the color as it didn't exactly match my stove but it was close enough. I've had the refrigerator for 3 months. I'm not fond of the crush ice feature. I thought it would be like crush ice like in the hospital. Sad to say it's not, it's more like broken ice. Other features work as expected. Yes, you have to hold the cup/glass against the device to make them operate. The door alarm will sound if either door is left open too long. It was a little wide for my doorway, but the delivery men made it work. I do wish I would have researched more because I thought the features were hands-free. Inside is smaller than expected, but so is my kitchen. So, it all worked out.
