Q:I want to resurface my concrete driveway. What materials do I need to purchase. It has pot holes. How do I fill them in before resurfacing?

      Answer This Question

A:  Good question. You will need Black Jack Speed Patch for holes smaller than 3” wide/ 3” deep, anything bigger you would have to use an aggregate pothole patch and you would not be able to coat the aggregate for 6 month up to a year. You can find the TDS and helpful how-to videos on the individual product page of www.gardnercoatings.com. Or you can contact our customer service at 1-800-237-1155 to discuss the project details.

          So far so Good
Still holding up after two weeks with no real problems even after heavy rains. Used a little over 6 buckets on approx. 2,000 sqft, so close to what you would expect. Filled in deep cracks first then applied 1 coat with mops and 1" nap paint roller for the edges. Driveway not in worse condition but had not been done for at least 10+ years.

          Excellent Coverage!!
Just finished my driveway... It's early June and 80⁰. Excellent coverage! Measurements said I needed 4 buckets worth. It took 5 1/2. Always buy extra. Made my 25 yr old asphalt look brand new. It's thick with alot of sand in the mix to fill small cracks. I'll always use Gardner brand from now on. I did only one coat and found no need for a second. We'll see after one year if I need a second coat. This stuff is everything that was expected. 100% recommend Gardner 8.

            DIY asphalt sealer
Purchased this to seal a driveway that had been sealed professionally 7 years ago, and to which I made cold pack repairs (Sackcrete and Quickcrete in cracks filled with Crackstick). I purchased 5 buckets to test coverage. In my application 5 buckets covered 870 square feet (174 square feet per bucket) including several coats on Sackcrete repairs (uses more product that flat, level asphalt). This was a single coat coverage which looked fine and I do not plan to apply a 2nd coat even though the directions recommend it. The coverage looks to be about 1/16th of an inch in my application. Based on that experience, I'm purchasing an additional 12 buckets for the remaining driveway. Pricey product, but still WAY less than hiring an asphalt company. The directions recommend THIN coats for a reason. I applied thick coats over the repairs and as the product dried, cracks appeared. It looked like the surface dries faster in the sun than the lower levels. As the surface dried, it shrank a bit and cracks appeared. It was easy to fix -- just step on the cracks as they dry and push them down, then apply product to fill the cracks. I should have paid attention to the directions as the problem did NOT occur in the thin layers applied with a squegee over the unrepaired asphalt. A couple tips. Use a broom to "cut in" the edges, like you would when painting a room. The broom was also helpful in filling voids, cracks and little holes. You actually can clean this up with water, so clean your squeegee at the end of the day. You'll also need to stir the buckets even if you turn them upside down overnight, but the stirring is not hard. When you turn the buckets upside down, put them on newspaper as 4 out of 5 of mine dribbled on the garage floor. No big deal unless you're a garage floor neatnik. Apply one bucket at a time, give it an hour or so to dry (which it will easily do if your driveway is in direct sun), then you can use your broom to brush in any missed spots and step on the product as needed to apply the next bucket. This is really messy stuff, so wear clothes and shoes you can throw away. Coverage on Sackcrete's asphalt repair is better than on Quickcrete's product. The latter has a pretty rough surface, which requires application with a broom working product into the patch and the patch takes a month or so to cure. In the picture, you can see the Quickcrete cold patch and what the driveway looked like before and after applying the product.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Gardner Pro 7. Two thin coats are definitely the way to go for better, longer lasting results. For those wanting to get the scoop on preparation and application in advance, they can check out the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) available on the product page of homedepot.com under Product Overview- Info & Guides - click "Specification".

            Exceeded expectations
After a couple of days, initial results appear to have exceeded a professionally sealed spray. Asphalt driveway very steep in places, only applied to spots with small cracks; sealer did not run on steep areas and covered some missed larger cracks better than a different vendor's crack sealer product. Applied easily using asphalt sealer brush over uneven crack sealed areas and applicator squeegee side over the remainder. Though pricey, best out of a bucket sealer, will see how long it lasts.
