Hi Ginger, 3/8" is the diameter of the tapered plug. We do not specify the diameter of the head. It is used to cover the plug for better appearance. Hope this helps.
Picked 10 at random to measure with a digital fractional caliper. From the flat bottom to the top of the rounded head, consistently measured 5/16" The top head diameters were almost half and half measuring 1/2" or 31/64" The short tapered portion at its widest point were almost half and half measuring 3/8" or 25/64" Sure hope that clears up the measurements

yes it's exactly 3/8" you can sand down the blug
Of course if they are the same it will not fit. I use a 25/64 drill bit and its a perfect fit. Just a size up from 3/8.
