Q:I already have the roof and weather vane (copper). The base of the copper roof is 30x30 sq. What size of wood cupola I should buy, so I can install my roof/weather vane on top of it?

Q:The materials are specified as cypress, but the base is clearly pine. Is the photo accurate? or is the base actually cypress? It makes a huge difference because pine will rot very quickly especially if it is in contact with the roof. Please clarify.

We ordered the Kent 26 in. X 32 in. Vinyl Cupola with Wood Roof by Good Directions and picked it up at our local Home Depot six (6) days later. The unit came in two (2) huge boxes but we were able to fit them both into a Chevrolet Tahoe. The cupola was well packaged and all the parts were included. Please be aware that the company does not include screws and we elected to screen the inside of the louvers with fiberglass screening to prevent insect infiltration. Our carpenter was easily able to cut the 8/12 pitch for the roof and had the unit installed in less than an hour. He found it easier to shingle after installation but noted the weathervane hole had to be enlarged to install our Montague Products weathervane (purchased from Home Depot; separate review). The cupola was installed on an 18 foot uninterrupted roofline. Over all, the cupola is very well made, did not require any painting, and using the 1.5 in. cupola size to 1 foot of roofline fit perfectly on our storage building. Excellent product and we are pleased customers!

The little cupola is very sturdy and well made. My only complaint is that the unit pictured is not the smallest unit. The louvers int he smallest one are not milled, but are fairly thick dimensional lumber which leaves much less room for ventilation, which was part of its intended use on our smoke-shed. It does hold the copper windvane I made and the copper roof I added very nicely, and is heavy enough that it will last. Add a star if a decorative use is all you have it in mind for. ONe important note, especially if you decide that you want it for ventilation, the wooden cleats you cut to add as anchor points to the roof must be ripped to a slight vertical angle on the outside faces, to match the slant of the sides in order to create a tight fit. A rectanglular cross-section cleat will stand out away from the bottom if this isn't done, or pull up from the roof.

An ok product but has a lack of quality control
Just received my Cupola and unpack it. The base is not square to where you attach it to the middle section, so I will have to do some cutting to make it fit together. The top where it attaches to the middle section is about 1/2" larger in the length and width so that will have to be shimmed to make it a tight enough fit to screw it together. 3 of the mitered cuts to make the sides have air gaps, several staples and a screw missed the mark in in assembly. For something that was made all at the same time, they have some quality control issues.
Now If it was square with clean cuts, the general total product seem strong and I will make it work.

Cupola
Well made, easy to assemble, looks great. Highly recommended if you want to ad some interest to a shed or barn. Can be made functional or decorative.
