Q:What size gas pipe do I need for a 400BTU heater. I currently have a 3/4" pipe which was used for my pool 400BTU heater for the past 30 years. Heater installers tell me I need a 1 1/2 pipe. Are there any consequences for using the existing 3/4" pipe?

So far it's great. We have a 24 foot round above ground pool. We have had a Hayward 200,000 btu years ago that got many years of use. We then purchased the Hayward 100,000 btu and that worked well for us but was a bit underpowered for our size pool, that only did 1 degree per hour. Last fall we closed our pool too late and it froze and it leaked. So with much research we purchased the Hayward 250,000 btu propane heater. Electrician hooked it up on 220. It fired right up and heats a bit more tha 2 degrees per hour. Some say it is loud. But its quieter than the little 100,000 btu we had. We hope for years of use. Easy to operate too.
