Q:Should this primer be encapsulated in primer? My method with the old hopper gun is to prime the drywall, spray texture, then prime over the texture again before painting.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello Matt, yes, the application method you are thinking of using will work. The primer will help seal the surface of the texture splatters helping ensure a uniform painted / gloss appearance.

Saves time and money, easy to use!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We usually mix our own texture batters. To get someone to do it is usually a challenge. This is a load and go system which one person can operate. PPG May have been reading minds of those of us in the field! Texture was orange peel but I did practice on a whole tube before taking it on a job site. Great for touchups which can be a challenge. Thanks PPG for developing a product that saves time and therefore money.

            Easy Use Texture
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We recently had a rental that had been occupied for 15 years become vacant and decided to try this for sections of texture that were missing and also try it on some of the untextured walls. We were not disappointed! We have a few regular texture guns and mix the drywall mud with water, and the process is an ordeal. This is so much easier for small areas! This would be a perfect addition to any landlord or handyman's tool pile! We are so excited we found an easy and quality solution for texture patches. The texture gun is sturdy and feels like it would hold up to several years of use. The texture itself comes out of the tubes evenly and is easy to control the amount of texture, reducing the potential mess. I would probably still recommend the regular texture gun for large jobs, as the tubes could get expensive, but it is so simplified that anyone could do it without the stress and the mess!

                  What a disappointment
Just finishing up a new addition, and needed to match the existing orange peel ceiling to a brand new one. What a great opportunity to try out this Sprayer! Setting up the sprayer was easy enough. The case is well organized, and the manual is thorough. Hooked it up to a compressor, inserted a cartridge, and i'm off to the races! Or Not. After adjusting to get the proper settings, and testing out the spray on some spare drywall, i began spraying the ceiling. Things were going well, until about a minute in. There was a SPLAT, and a large blob of texture was shot onto the ceiling. Confused, i stopped, wiped it off, tested the sprayer again, and then continued. Another 30 or so seconds later, and SPLAT. The same thing. Like a disgusting, thick mucus dripping sneeze, the sprayer would ruin a perfectly good area of texture. Well to make a long story short, this kept happening. Over and over and over again. Each time, i would have to put down the sprayer, get some paper towels, grab the stool, climb up to wipe the area thoroughly, climb down and then pick up the sprayer again. This got annoying - real quick, and greatly decreased my efficiency in texturing the ceiling. It didn't matter what settings i tried for the pressure. High or low on the nozzle, and high or low on the compressor. No effect. Every 30 or so seconds, there would be a huge SPLAT and i would have to clean up the mess and then texture that area again. What a royal pain. How did it eventually look? Not great. It didn't have the orange peel bumpiness as expected. This tubed texture compound is more like a viscus putty. And when it is sprayed on the wall, it ends up being more "stringy" than bumpy. See the photos. This is NOT Orange Peel, and it didn't match the existing texture. The coverage for the cartridges was also much less than expected. I had a contractors box of 6 tubes, which needed to cover a ceiling of ~ 350 sqft. This should have been no problem, as each tube claims to cover up to 100 sqft, and is nearly double my need. Alas, it fell short, and i ran out, not even being able to complete the ceiling. Running to Home Depot to purchase more, i discovered they only sell them in packs of 6, not individually. I opted to purchase two standard orange peel spray cans instead, as the hassle was just not worth it. So a job that should have taken me perhaps one hour of spraying, ended up taking 4. And while the results may not have been horrendous (the ceiling did get somewhat textured, after all) the experience sure was. Stick with a hopper.

There’s nothing to spill with this system
I was a bit leery of this Homax TexPro texture system sprayer, but after using it for a while, it has made a believer out of me. This is a spray gun for spraying ceiling and wall texture coatings. There is no hopper to fill because it uses prefilled cartridges. Now while the cartridges appear to be very pricey, when you figure your labor for mixing, filling, and cleaning a hopper type of spray gun, this spray system can actually save you quite a bit of time and money. There’s nothing to spill with this system. You load the cartridge in, set your air, and spray. I like the fact that it has a pressure gauge built right into the side of the gun (See photo) as well as a regulator. It comes with its own storage carrying case, and extra gasket seals. It even includes quick disconnects for your air hose. This gun allows you to texture coat areas that are difficult to reach with a hopper style sprayer. Spraying the ceiling in a closet for example with a hopper style system usually ends up with material raining down on you. With a cartridge system you can aim the gun straight up and not have any material spill out. Cleanup is easy, it even comes with a brush for cleaning out the orifices. This sprayer can be cleaned in a small sink, where a hopper style sprayer you pretty much need a wash tub or a garden hose outside in a secluded area. They claim that it’s a lot lighter than a hopper style sprayer, but the gun weighs about six and a half pounds, and a full cartridge weighs about 3 pounds, so fully loaded it comes in at 9 and a half pounds plus any air hose you’d be lifting. So, depending how much material you have in a hopper system, I’m not sure which is heavier or lighter. You do need an air compressor that will provide 2.6 cubic feet of air per minute.

                  This works great!
We have this miserable knock down texture on the ceiling and the walls. Had to do a recent ceiling repair and wasn’t sure I could match up the texture. Tried this product and you decide! I primed the patched area but can you tell it was a repair? I can’t tell! Easy to use. Just install a cartridge, test it and do your thing! Easy cartridges as simple to install and use. Clean up takes minutes.

                  Nice texture gun
Homax TexPro Texture System Sprayer with Durable Carry Case and case of texture. This is a nice texture gun system. I'm use to a hopper style texture gun so this is really different. The light weight is nice, clean up is quick and easy. I did have to use a videos to learn how to use it. It is easy to dial in to get the pattern you need. The tunes are easy to use. The only con I have seen with it the price of the tube is kind of high in comparison to a box of texture. For the price of a hopper gun and a few boxes of texture, is about equal to the price of this gun, but you also have to mix and there is a lot more clean up. So I guess you pick mixing and clean up or convenience.

                  Quick and Easy
I wanted this product to see if it would make touch easier. After using it on a small job, I can definitely say it is quicker and easier. It is much easier to handle than my other texture sprayer. And it is super easy to clean. One cartridge will cover between 40-100 sq. ft. of wall depending on the texture your are going for. So, if I am going to do a lot (a whole room or more), then I will probably still use my other sprayer for large job. But since I mostly have patches to cover in rent houses, This will be getting the majority of the work from now on. The details: The sprayer is made of heavy duty metal and rubberized components for drop protection. Everything is included except the cartridges and your air compressor and hose. It even comes with spare parts. I weighed mine at 6 pounds 11.3 oz and a light texture cartridge at 2 pounds 13.5 oz. So combined it weighed just over 9.5 pounds fully loaded. The cartridges hold 28 oz of material. It is best to use the cartridge the same day that you open it.

                  Well thought-out
I have two small bedrooms rooms with textured ceilings, and both need repairs (or replacing). Right at the moment the price to get someone to come out for a small job is frightfully expensive in my area, so I am going to use the texture spray system to attempt repairs. The spray gun itself is well-made; everything comes apart easily for cleanup. There is an on-board pressure adjuster, and it comes with three different-sized nozzles. I was going to spray some test patters this morning to figure out how to best match the (two different) ceiling textures, but I ended up going through the 58-page well-written and illustrated manual instead. After reading that, I'll keep my spray patters for the day of repair; between nozzle size, cartridge and pressure adjustment, I should be able to match both ceilings. But if not, I want to have the entire room masked so I can just redo both ceilings.
