The Bona cleaning products are the most recommended products to clean bamboo flooring. They do not leave a residue and are safe for children and pets. Do not use the Swiffer cleaning system. It will leave a residue over time and make the flooring look hazy. As for color changes, there is not much you can do to prevent that. First of all, bamboo flooring is a natural product and will inevitably react to changes in its surroundings. Like most things, if left in the sun over long periods of time, bamboo will change color slightly. Carbonized bamboo flooring is likely to fade, or go lighter in color. Whereas, natural bamboo flooring is likely to go slightly darker or richer in color. Furthermore, you may not even notice these changes as they will be subtle and appear gradually over time. The extent to which your bamboo flooring will fade is due to how much sunlight they are exposed to. For example, bamboo flooring in a conservatory is likely to fade much more than if it were in a bedroom or room with little natural light. Please see the NWFA.org website for more information on how to protect your floor.
Gluing or nailing will not prevent flooring from expanding and contracting. All wood/bamboo flooring products will do this naturally. You will still need to leave an expansion gap on the edges near the wall. Typically those will be covered by the wall base or 1/4" round. NWFA has guidelines on their website that will help you determine how to install this product properly. NWFA.org
My installer recommended not putting this on the stairs as it's designed to float and wouldn't withstand the constant stress of stair traffic. I had new wooden treads put on mine and stained them to match.
Bamboo is a soft fibrous plant that quickly regenerates after it's cut down which is what makes it so popular with anyone concerned about the environment. Unfortunately, it also means it is much more susceptible to scratches than a hardwood. You can get color sticks to fill in the scratches that expose the lighter, unstained portions and embrace the additional character it gives to your floor. I hate to say it, but if you feel you need a totally scratch-resistant floor, you'd be better served by purchasing a true hardwood flooring material.
I wouldn't advise using it in a bathroom. While liquids will sit on top long enough to wipe them up, it's still bamboo which can be porous. You'd be better off looking at a laminate imitation wood. It's a beautiful floor in a living room, family room or bedroom, though! I've been extremely happy with mine.
We put this on our stairs over 2 years ago and it does not show very many signs of wear. We don't wear shoes in the house but I am surprised at how well the floor has held up. We have not added any type of protective coating to the floor. It is not needed.
using a vacuum, my 35lb dog, pieces of the flooring peeled up when a footpad from a chair leg had the edge stuck to the floor. this flooring is horrible
Hello Ronda, A circular saw makes the removal easy. I hope this helps. Cheers, Chris
I only use a cloth mop. I rinse it under hot water , ring it out, and clean the floors with it lightly damp. Works well for me.
