The core does not appear to be wood of any kind, but the bottom is wood. The core is the part that has the tongue. It appears to be some sort of MDF. Note that if you are gluing this down with a urethane adhesive, water will not penetrate, provided you are diligent in maintaining tight seams between the boards.
It is floating in that it is not anchored to the subfloor, but it is not a click-lock tongue and groove. The groove cannot be nailed, so you have to glue it with something like a urethane adhesive.
Wow that was a heavy fork! I have the floor as well and have experienced some scratches. I just use a touch up pen. I haven't experienced that the floor is any less durable that standard oak flooring in other parts of my house. They don't stay spotless unfortunately.
The underlayment is basically a moisture/sound barrier. I used an underlayment suitable for engineered wood floors. Just roll it out, then glue the boards to the underlayment. As for the glue, there are no instructions for the glue either. I researched and used a urethane adhesive recommended for wood flooring. It was the stickiest stuff I've ever seen. Once it's down, it's virtually waterproof, but it's extremely hard to finish a room in one day because the boards tend to separate if you're not paying close attention, and if they set that way you'll never be able to adjust them back to where they need to be. I recommend setting the first row, allow it to dry, then work the remainder of the room using the first row as the guide.
Given the length of the boards and the tongue/groove design I would take a plank into a local flooring store and have them color match longer bamboo planks to create the border frame (leaving an expansion gap where the frame meets the wall. Once I installed it, I realized that the planks were too short to do an attractive frame.
Yes...but why? The best thing about this floor is that it's herringbone.
Yes, but the glue should have moisture barrier and leveling qualities
