Hello Jread5, Thanks for your question on the Homelite 13 in. 4 Amp Straight Electric String Trimmer UT41113. The line will extend approximately 1/4 in. with each stop and start of the switch trigger until the line reaches the length of the cut-off blade on the grass deflector. The only way to avoid this is to try and keep your hand on the trigger for a continuous run before stopping. I hope this helps. - Eve

Too Much Hassle
I have plenty of cord, my yard is small but this thing does not have autofeed for the string. I have to stop it for several seconds and then the string feeds. I like that it has plenty of power, unlike the battery operated trimmer I had, however, having to constantly stop to get string, slows me down to an annoying crawl.

Hello, Grand - We're sorry that you're not having a good experience with the line advancing! The auto-feed feature will advance a 1/4 inch of the line when you release the trigger, wait 2 seconds, and then squeeze the trigger again. And if you feel your string trimmer isn't performing this way, then please email us at reviews@homelite.com. Homelite

It served the purpose for me, I had not much trimming to do. However, in the past I had used one similar to it, and once the string was done, somehow I couldn’t replace it and couldn’t use it any more and had to discard it. Hope it will not be the case with this one. It would be great if this can be battery operated as it will make it much easier.

This product is way overrated!! after two uses in a month, the auto feeder stopped working, you have to unplug the power cord, stop and manual press the release button at the bottom, at the end of the second use, one of the prongs broken off completely, now it can't start. contact the company and was given a service shop 40 min away, and they opens when I work, has to take time off to go there to have this unit checked, otherwise the company will not replace. Have been a fun of Black and Decker, took a chance to switch, boy, was I wrong!!! never again another homelite. and If you don't own one, don't bother.

After 7 years of dutiful service from my previous Homelite Electric trimmer, it finally died. And heaven knows I put that thing through the gamut, well beyond it's generally specified use. After reading reviews for the newer model, I was hesitant to get it and nearly paid the $20 extra for the Black & Decker until I saw reviews and photos of the electrical plug melting on that one. I'm glad I had faith in what I already know and chose this one. After using this model for 2 days straight, the unit is an absolute work horse of a bargain with tons of new features and seemingly more power that makes the job so much easier. I'm loving the auto line feed as my previous model required stopping to flip it over to use a manual button on the spool shaft to advance, which frequently wasted line. I also love that it came ready to use with minimal assembly and a spool of .065 line already on it. I don't care what anyone else has to say...... .065 line works just fine for even the toughest job. After 7 years of having to spool my own line, I certainly don't mind respooling when the string lasts this long! I also love that you can just buy a new already strung spool to pop in it if you're in a hurry, but I'm a frugal girl who never minds spooling my own string and have a ton of it already on hand. I was able to weed eat and edge my entire large front yard and use the thing as a BUSH HOG to knock down overgrown marsh grass at the back of my property before needing to replace the line on a reasonably small spool. This model has the power to knock down thick stemmed stuff and dig down to cut tuberous growth or thatch at it's source without burning up the string IF you know how to use it right. It is super light weight which increases the length of time I can use it and due to the quick auto line advance and power, I was able to accomplish much more in less time with a lot less waste of string. Highly recommend! I think the folks who have left less than stellar reviews might not know how to correctly operate their power tools or a good weed eater. Operation tips: Go low from the sides of larger overgrowth to knock down so the overgrowth isn't just spun around and avoid any hidden moss. Know how to approach and retreat for optimal knock down. To avoid wasting string, hold the trigger unless you want to advance. The only time my new unit got hung up or was less than efficient was if if I tried to go top down on big stuff or encountered some hidden moss that the marsh grass had engulfed. It even went around hidden tree limbs and twigs easily while still eliminating the under growth so I could remove the debris before coming back with the mower.

I purchased this item almost a month a go. Just pulled it out of the box earlier this week. In the attempt to weed whack & trim my small to medium size yard. That had gotten intentionally out of control. By my discriminative landlord. The trimmer was ok power wise. The biggest issue that I had with it. Was the cover somehow disconnecting. Causing spool to shoot out at a extreme rate. Resulting with a portion of line. Tangle into knots and going to waste. It used up two spools. For a yard that shouldn't have used a whole one. Plus the self feed didn't work most of the time. Spent more time flipping it over & readjusting it by hand. Returning it today . Ordered a Ryobi-One online last night. Free delivery rec by Sep 12. Hope I have better luck this time.

Customer review from homedepot.ca logo
I bought a 24v lawnmower from Home Depot 3 years ago. 24v unit model number UT13126. Was a good unit for the first 1.5 yrs. Even told my dad about the unit that same year that I bought one and so did he on my recommendation. NOW? In 3 grass cutting seasons, I have a unit that doesn't charge past the first red charge light (less than 25%). I took the battery into the house each fall to ensure the battery never got gold. My dad's unit this year doesn't even start. No lights, no nothing even after charging for days. Horrible waste of money and worse yet I talked my dad into buying it too! To my great surprise, I go into a home depot to find that you don't carry the Home lite brand??? Big shocker, such a piece of junk, 3 grass cutting seasons and 2 units are dead? It's brutal and I need some type of restitution for this, not at all acceptable!
