Only had it for one week
This was completely the wrong shower head for my family. We thought with the three different stages, that at least one stage would truly be a powerful stream. But not at all! It's so awful. All three settings are basically the same setting. The shower head does not evenly distribute the water and you basically can only get any water if you are directly standing under the shower head. There is zero force in any stream. It's honestly the worst shower head I have ever experienced in my life. And with girls who have extremely thick hair, forget about it!! Takes forever to rinse your hair out. My contractor and my entire family are extremely disappointed. We thought Kohler was a very good brand, but obviously not. The shower head leaks all the time and the faucet also leaks. The handle, stopping is just confusing and not necessary. We are stuck with a beautiful, brand new bathroom and we all avoid using this shower because of its lack of being a decent shower head. Trying to figure out the best solution now, since everything is completed.

Me and my wife ❤️ the black shower head. It really make the bathroom look amazing.

Nope
First, this is darker than any brushed nickel I’ve seen. But that’s on me for not thinking I had to check if the fixture matched the box depiction. More importantly, this looks HORRIBLE after being wet. I’ve never seen anything like it. It looks older than the 20-yr old fixture we replaced. But since I’ve already paid for the installation, I can’t return it. Sure it functions fine. But it will make you angry every morning you look at it.

Contractor picked this out a year ago for our bathroom remodel, and it looked sharp, so we approved it. He didn't mention anything about install, so I can't comment on that. But after using it for a year now, I would not recommend it. The water spots collect on it and are extremely difficult to remove even after carefully wiping it down after each shower. It doesn't look nice at all anymore. And the temperature restrictor is annoying - I never really get hot showers unless I "trick" the faucet by letting it run a while first and then increasing the temp gradually. And just keep in mind, this 1 handle style doesn't allow you to control the pressure of the water - it's either on or off. Probably fine for most adults, but my kids like to play with the water stream during bath time, and there's no way to have it just trickle into the bath slowly unless you want cold water.

Response from Kohler Product ExpertFeb 25, 2019
Waterspots, my name is Sarah with Kohler Co. I'm sorry to hear you aren't completely satisfied with your Rubicon bath/shower faucet. Water spots can occur when there is more calcium in your water, causing "hard water". To prevent them, wiping the faucet after use will help, however, to remove them, we suggest using a white vinegar and water solution. Combining 50% water and 50% white vinegar will remove these "hard water" spots. The temperature can be adjusted on your valve. Instructions showing how this can be done can be found in step 14 on the Installation and Care Guide here: https://www.us.kohler.com/webassets/kpna/catalog/pdf/en/1110626_2.pdf. Basically impossible to install
While not experienced with plumbing work, I have put up new lights and towel racks in my bathroom and swapped out the faucet on my sink with matching unit from Kohler, so do have the experience to swap this out with my current Kohler set up. As noted in the title, it's basically impossible to install this the way the instructions tell you to. . 1) The tub faucet - First, you need over 4" of exposed pipe to try to install this, so if you have an older style faucet like mine with 3" of pipe, your stuck with calling a plumber to have them extend the pipe. Also, whatever you do, do not loosen the set screw so that the set ring can fall out. Did this by accident and it took me 20 mins to get it back in the faucet because the ring is two interlocking pieces that have locating nubs. So if the two pieces are interlocked properly, they won't go into the locating notches. And since where you are trying to put them is over 3" down in the faucet, which is longer than most people's fingers, you can't hold the pieces together and try to place them in position. Just an absolute nightmare trying to put them back. . 2) Shower controls - There are two plates used for install of the shower controls. There is a mounting plate that screws into the mounting hardware that's in the wall and then the decorative faceplate that's your apparently supposed to snap on to this. Only one problem, the cavity on the back side of the faceplate is much deeper than the mounting points for it on the mounting plate. Which means that once the mounting plate is attached, the faceplate it too tall to reach the mounting plate (ie the 2 pieces don't touch) and leaves it loose on the wall, so it can spin freely after everything is installed. If it is supposed to spin freely, and I can't fathom why, the assembly instructions don't indicate this. So I have no idea if I'm putting this together correctly or not. . 3)Control lever stack up issues - As with all shower controls there is a little square adapter that acts as a bridge between the water control mechanisms and the control lever. While I could get the adapter to fit in the lever and on the water controls, I couldn't get all three pieces to assemble together. This is a big deal because you are supposed to push everything together and then screw the lever housing back on to the mounting plate to tighten everything up. I could never get the adapter to fully engage with both the control mechanism and the lever enough so that I could start the housing threads (and yes I flipped it both ways). And you can't really push on this too hard or you will crack your pipes behind the wall and flood your home! It appears to be what Engineer's refer to as a "stack up issue" which means the max allowable size on the outside of the adapter is basically the same size as smallest allowable min size of the mating cavity in the handle assembly. With the same thing going on between the OD teeth on the controller and the ID teeth of the adapter. While you could put the adapter on either of the other two pieces individually, you couldn't put all three together because it was too tight of a fit. Even tried some plumber's grease on the outside of the adapter to help it slide on, didn't work. . Basically you have a very poorly designed set both at the macro and micro level. There is no reason to require 4" of exposed pipe for the tub faucet, you could easily modify it's internal structures to work with 3" or even 2" of exposed pipe. And obviously it is a lot CHEAPER to cut off a long pipe and re-thread it vs adding a 1" extension. Add that to all the assembly problems with the control parts, and it's just JUNK. Trying to replace an existing Kohler shower set with a new one should not be this difficult. So I've already spent $200 on this, now have to decide if I want to spend another $500+ for a plumber to come deal with this or buy something that doesn't match my faucet, thanks for nothing Kohler!!

Response from Kohler Product ExpertJun 9, 2021
Hi David, we're sorry to hear you've had trouble with your Rubicon shower installation. We appreciate you taking the time to provide this candid feedback. I'm happy to address some of your concerns. The bath spout set screw is not designed to be removed, it can simply be tightened and loosened. The handle escutcheon plate is sandwiched between the handle and wall. As you tighten the handle skirt to the threaded hub, this will pull the escutcheon plate to the wall for a snug fit. If the escutcheon appears to be loose as the handle is fully threaded, this may indicate the valve was not roughed into the wall deep enough. The rough in depth is shown on page two of the specification sheet: https://bit.ly/3pIcspB. This may also be causing the trouble with the handle adapter assembly. If the adapter fits on both pieces correctly and snuggly but when you go to install them all together, they do not fit, this may be caused by the rough in depth that is too deep in the wall. Please email us at KohlerCustServ@kohler.com for warranty assistance We're here to help. Sarah S. Kohler Customer Service
