Product Overview

Kellogg Garden Organics All Natural Premium Outdoor Potting Mix is the perfect ready-to-use mix for all your outdoor container gardening projects. Specially designed with aged wood fines - it looks different than conventional peat-based potting mixes, but provides benefits much like the forest floor for growing annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and more. Wood fines help the soil retain more moisture, reducing the need to water frequently. It also attracts beneficial soil microbes which aid in resistance to plant pest and disease, helping plants thrive in their outdoor containers. We added natural fertilizers like bat guano, poultry manure and kelp meal to give plants a good start. But don't forget to add an organic granular fertilizer for extended feeding throughout the growing season.
  • Blended with aged wood fines that help reduce watering
  • Helps plants resist pest and disease
  • With added fertilizers: bat guano, poultry manure and kelp meal
  • Bigger, brighter plants - guaranteed
  • Proven organic - OMRI listed
  • Apply fertilizer at the time of planting

Okay for container tomatoes

No, this does not work for container tomatoes. We put two tomato plants in a different soil, six tomato plants in the ground, and two in this stuff. All the other tomatoes are doing great and blooming like crazy. The ones we planted in this potting mix are sickly. I don't know about other vegetables, but don't use this product for tomatoes.

I have several hanging baskets on the patio with this soil and everything seems great. The baskets are the inexpensive $5 Vigoro ones sold at Home Depot and I have planted both fuchsias and strawberries in this soil and they are thriving. I add a good amount of perlite to all of the Kellogg's soils and this works out pretty well. And I live in Seattle and drainage is a must.

I'm struggling with growing cilantro, chives, green onion, and lettuce directly from seed in this mix. All came out, but they weren't growing fast enough. This mix seem to have a severe lack of nutrient. Definitely not suitable for seeds.

While I am not a big fan of this soil as a potting mix, I do think it would work well for potatoes as they wouldn't mind the little pieces of wood in it.

This potting mix killed my healthy plants.
This is the first time I have used this potting mix. I was growing a Bottle gourd and a cucumber plant in 10 gal pots and a Zucchini plant in 5 gal pot using miracle grow potting soil. I ordered Kellogg Garden Potting mix from Home depot via online because of its good price. I added some potting mix to the bottle gourd and the zucchini plants and I noticed both plants died in couple of days. I wasn't sure what did I do wrong. My cucumber plant had small cucumber coming out. To add more nutrition I used some potting mix. 3 hours later I noticed the all the leaves were wilted and the plant just died. It seems like something really toxic was in the potting mix. I am dumping the rest and will return the other bag. I have never had such bad experience buying a product from Home Depot.

Side by side with other potting soil - everything in this mix is stunted!
I bought this organic mix for veggie starts under my grow light system, and because I could get it delivered during COVID. I ran out of my usual mix halfway through potting on a batch of seedlings. I didn't realize how great that side-by-side experiment would be, but it taught me to skip this brand. Everything potted in this mix was totally stunted and never recovered (even if transplanted outside or repotted in another mix), while my regular potting soil grew lush and healthy transplants. The photo shows two lettuce plants that were grown side by side - same light, same water, same fertilizer. The only difference is the potting soil. The tiny, stunted version is grown with Kellogg. I also used this for flowering plants in pots on my patio, with the same stunted results. I'm currently dumping everything that was potted with this into the trash, along with what I had yet to use - I'm even afraid to put it in my compost bin, for fear that it's contaminated with something! I'll never purchase this brand again.

One of the best potting soils I have ever used and I have been growing plants in containers for many years. I liked the consistency of the mix, there were no large chunks I usually find in other potting mixes, and the smell was nice and earthy. I did add little bit of pumice for extra drainage, but that is something I always do anyway. I will use this mix again and would highly recommend it to anyone. Great product for really good price.

Purchased this Potting Soil to plant Tomatoes in pots. Price was good however I planted one of my tomato plants using Miracle Grow Potting Soil and three using Kellogg Potting Soil. I can tell you that the Tomato planted in Miracle Grow Potting Soil is double the size and has tomatoes on it after only 2-3 weeks. I will stick with Miracle Grow Potting Soil for now on even if it cost more.

Inconsistent
I did a experiment with several different products at the beginning of the season. I got Fox Farm Happy Frog, Vermont Reclamation Soil, and Kellog’s to compare. The first two were quite expensive because of shipping while at my local store, this only costs $8 vs $30+ for the others. My first purchase of four bags seemed really good compared to the cost of the others, however my purchase of a six additional bags were terrible for seed starting. The wood particles were basically the size of mulch. It had not broken down yet and it was very disappointing. I would rank review it 4 stars if all ten of my bags were like the first purchase, but I need to know what I’m getting.

Worst.
I have never used a potting soil this dense. It holds way too much water, has a distinctly bad odor, and plants are not doing well. But the number one reason I am not happy is the STAINING! A deep, dark liquid every time I water is coming out of my pots and dripping out of my hanging baskets. 100 year-old limestone flanking my front stairs has been ruined. The organic material/manure has not been properly composted or something. Many of the great reviews are 2019 or earlier. Avoid.
