Q:My new smoke detector does not have the green light on when I 1st installed it the green light came on but then went dark. There is 120volt power to the unit is it suppose to stay green all the time?

Answer This Question

A:  Hello. This alarm has an ambient light feature. When the alarm detects it is in a dim or dark area, it will dim the solid green ring to a green flicker on one small part of the ring every 60 seconds instead of the solid green ring. To test for AC power in a dim area, you can hold a flashlight or a cell phone on flashlight mode to the face of the alarm for 2 minutes. If the alarm is getting AC power, it should go to a solid green light.

Q:Do I have to wire smoke detector with others for it to alert the other alarms ?
    by|Mar 12, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Hello. Yes. All of the alarms would need to be on the same 3 wire circuit as shown on the wiring diagram in the owner's manual for this alarm and other Kidde alarms to interconnect.

          DO NOT BUY THESE
Much like everyone else here, I had 6 false alarms from 8pm to 4am. Three of these are in pieces, the other three are sealed in a bag in a box in my basement. This is not the first time. My 6 and 3 year old girls were screaming terrified as the entire house strobes and screamed “FIRE” as I frantically ran around the house trying to silence them until finally smashing them to pieces in my garage out of desperation. Do not buy this product - total crap.

No cust service, and no interconnect
Waited 2 hrs after calling and no one ever answered. All seemed to install fine but can't get interconnect system to work, so don't know if it works or not. Fire inspector said he's unsure if they work together or not as none of us can get them to pair. No instructions on what's up, but the box says they have an interconnect system.

Response from Kidde ExpertFeb 2, 2024
We are sorry you had such an issue getting through to us that day. We must of had a very high call volume. Try us again on a Thursday or Friday, first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon, and you should be able to get through very easily.
              Green LED ring doesn't work
I've had no issues with false alarms. What I do have an issue with is that the green LED ring does not come on during the day like advertised. I surmise Kidde installed the ambient light sensor too deep into the unit and/or the sensitivity is set too low. So unless you install these so they are hit by direct sunlight you will never see the green LED ring light up. I contacted Kidde customer service and their response was that my house was just not bright enough during the day, pfft.

You'll probably not see this until it's too late..
These were selected and installed by a local electrician, reputable electrical company, and we didn't care because smoke detectors work and we HAD no brand loyalty. Over the past year of having these... We have had CONSTANT issues with false alarms... electrician replaces individual units... But this week will be one year of having these installed... 2 are dead awaiting replacement and 3 have already been replaced, the fire department has been here twice to assist with trying to discover the issue (the problem units are best placed, consistently) and we've lost half a dozen nights sleep over OUR FIRST 12 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP OF THIS DETECTOR (12 detectors, actually). They're so bad I actually took the time to come to this website and write this review, one went off at 2am last night (makes them all go off)... And I'm to the point where I don't check the house for fire, I grab the step ladder, yank it down and smash the battery seal on the back of the problem unit. Read that again. I'll be calling the electrician to try and convince them to buy units with another company. I would rate this ZERO stars... But they made me choose 1 star.

Response from Kidde Product SupportAug 23, 2022
Hello. When these alarms were installed, was any renovations done or anything that might have brought up any dust or debris? False alarms are most commonly caused by something interfering with the sensor. To clean, hold the unit by its edge and thoroughly blow through the gap on the side of the unit with compressed air (like keyboard cleaner). We recommend cleaning out all of your smoke alarms at least every 6 months to a year and at this point we would recommend cleaning out all of your other alarms as well as a preventative. Some of your alarms may be in one the locations to avoid listed in the owner's manual. This would especially include alarms being installed within 3 ft (.9m) of a forced air supply ducts used for heating or cooling, ceiling or whole house ventilating fans, or other high air flow areas. We recommend that alarms not be installed near vents, flues, chimneys, or fans. We recommend that alarms not be installed near doors or windows near areas directly exposed to the weather. We strongly recommend not to install these alarms in garages, attics, and crawl spaces as you will get temperatures, dust, insects, and chemicals that can cause nuisance alarms. If you have interconnected alarms, the first step is finding the initiating unit, as that is the key. Once you know where the issue is happening, it is usually easy to figure out what is causing the alarms to go off. To find the initiating unit, look for one that is flashing RED or GREEN at least once every second while in alarm mode, then follow the reset procedure on that unit. If the alarm stopped on its own before you could find that flashing light, the initiating unit will flash for 1.5 seconds every 10 seconds. If there are no obvious signs of a fire, the alarm should be cleaned before being reinstalled. Try cleaning out the alarms regularly. If that doesn't resolve the issue, find the alarm setting off all of the others and call us with that alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and get this resolved for you.

                  Complete Junk
4 new alarms in a new built house. 6 months in the false alarms started. You cannot shut them off. NEVER EVER BUY THIS ALARM. Or any Kidde product since they are still selling these while knowing they are JUNK.
