I had the chance to test out my new Klein tools cooling bandana, I got mine in black although I'm not sure how many colors it comes in. Here in california we get 90 degree's in March. As a painter I was painting the exterior of a house in the March heat. A perfect time to try out my bandana. I soaked it in water for 1 minute shook it out and tied it on. I noticably felt cooler and as the day went on with the heat the cooling bandana stayed cool the whole time. After 5 hours I redipped it in more water and it refreshed me again. I don't do exterior paint jobs without it now.

While it might turn you into Karate Kid, it definitely keeps you cool! One of the things I hate with regular bandana’s is that after you sweat a lot, it does not retain all the moisture and soon enough I have salty sweat dripping into my eyes. I have used this Klein Cooling Bandana a few times (since it is made to be used over and over) and so far, so good, no sweat in my eyes. (Bonus!) I know that it is made to keep you cool, and it does that too, but for me the extra absorption properties is what I like best about it. All you need to activate it, is just give it a good soak in the sink and tie it on, easy enough. And since it retains the water, it provides cooling for your forehead and/or around your neck. And at the end of the day, a little mild detergent hand wash and air drying allows you to use it the next day, and the next, and the next….

Another accessory from Klein tools and good price point. This bandana only needs to be wet down lightly, before you put it on. The bandana is very comfortable to wear and small enough that it can go into pocket when not needed. My husband really likes to wear it while mowing, works much better than a regular cotton bandana that he use to wear. I like to use it when I am working out.

I live in a relative mild climate. And, I work outdoors in the yard or the garage most of the time. I don’t like the heat. Never have. Anything over 75 when I’m exerting myself is “hot” to me. Even in our mild climate, 80, 90 and 100 degree shade temps are not unknown. When I ride my motorcycle, I have a cooling vest full of water absorbing PVA crystals that I soak and then put on over a T-shirt and under my mesh jacket when the temperatures are warmish. The absorbed water is held and slowly evaporated while I ride, keeping my torso cool in the hot weather for a couple of hours. And, is easily renewed by soaking the vest in water again for a few minutes. For those of you who didn’t pay attention in high school physics, a phase change from liquid to gas (water to steam) uses (absorbs) more heat than just heating the water in it’s liquid form by a wide margin. One’s body heat is being absorbed by the water in the vest as they ride and the heated water vaporizes and evaporates as it does. Klein has adapted the PVA cooling crystals idea to head bands . (And, evidently a bunch of other cooling towels, caps, etc. as well.) One’s head is the warmest part of one’s body and cooling it is the most effective cooling one can get. When this first arrived, I was concerned because there was no fasteners of any kind, Velcro or otherwise, to keep them on my had. And, my past experience with tied headbands (I was a child of the sixties) was that they didn’t stay tied very well and soon fell off. Well, this proved to be of no consequence in this case. When I tied the headband on, even with just a single knot, the knot stays put and so does the headband. These are thin enough to be worn under a hard hat or other cap that allows air circulation so that the strip of cooling crystals can have the absorbed water evaporate. I say, if you want to give these a try, pick a couple up today. You can have one soaking while you wear the other. Or, you can use one around the back of your neck and one on your head at the same time. Or better yet, give one to your buddy while you enlist his/her help moving all that lumber in the heat! :-) Like most all Klein products, they’re value priced. They’re only a few bucks each! I think I might pick up some of the other Klein line as well: A cooling towel, cooling doo rag, cooling helmet liner. I’ll be “cool” all the time. ;-)
