Could other brand self tapping screws be used or must one use only Kreg screws?

Answer This Question

What length screws should be used for joining 2X4's?
ByOct 6, 2021

Answer This Question

Thank you for your inquiry. When using 2x material, you will be using a 2-1/2" screw.

By|Oct 6, 2021

    If both boards are 2x4’s (1 1/2” thickness), you should use 2 1/2” screws. Here’s a good link for a reference:  https://industrydiy.com/woodworking/kregtools/kreg-jig-settings-chart/

Whats the differance between the k4-5 models?

      Answer This Question

The K5 is larger and meant for bigger pieces of wood and it also has a built in clamp and dust cover. The K4 is moreso for DIYers and smaller. Both are great.

Will this work connecting 2x4 lumber?

      Answer This Question

Yep! I’ve used it on 2x4s plenty of times.

      By|Nov 12, 2020

      Yes

      By|Nov 25, 2020

Thanks for the questions. The Kreg K4 will work with your standard 2x4 that is 1 1/2" thick.

        By|Nov 11, 2020

It will. I have used this many times with 2x4s and they are solid joins.

          By|Nov 18, 2020

Given the depth settings and clamp depth it will certainly create pocket holes in 2x4 lumber.

It says in the description that the drill guide is removeable. "Removable drill guide is great for making home repairs". Does this mean I can use the drill guide without the base? Is there a spacing guide to know where to clamp the drill guide or do I need to build spacers for the different wood thicknesses?

            Answer This Question

Exactly, its all in the booklet identifies wood thickness etc.

            By|Nov 13, 2020

Yes, it is removable and can be used without the base. I’d recommend going to Kreg website and watch videos, i found them very helpful.

            By|Dec 5, 2020

The drill guide will come out of the unit, but and you could clamp it to a piece of wood - it doesn't have positive stops like the units that are specifically designed for this task so I never used it in this manor. Removing the guide does make cleaning the whole unit easier.

              By|Nov 10, 2020

Yes, it comes out and you could clamp the drill guide to your work piece.

              By|Dec 13, 2020

Not sure if you can use it without the base, but I’ve never had the need. Using the system has always been easier. As for the guides, there are locks and guides for screw length and wood thickness.

What size screws come with it? What size are they?

                Answer This Question

There is a small sampling of various types and sizes, coarse for softwoods and fine for hardwoods. If memory holds true, 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", and 2" lengths. These are special designed.pocket screws.

                By|Jan 14, 2020

It comes with an assortment of 50 in various lengths and purposes. You select the right one based on your material. Most are 1 1/4 in both hardwood and softwood screw threads.

                By|Jan 14, 2020

                  I purchased my kit with the starter kit. It included: 50 1" screws, 100 1 1/4" screws, 50 1 1/2" screws, 30 2 1/2" screws, and 30 2 1/2" blue kote screws.

                  By|Jan 15, 2020

Thank you for your inquiry. This will come with 10 pack of each of the 2-1/2, 1-1/2" coarse, 1-1/4 coarse, 1-1/4 fine and 1" coarse.

                  By|Jan 14, 2020

I no longer remember what sizes came with it (I bought mine 2-3 years ago) … but I bought a second large screw pack at the same time, and it has sizes for everything.

Do you have to clamp to a counter top before using it, or can you just sit it on a flat surface and start drilling?

No ! Just place on a flat surface!

                      By|Jul 14, 2020

It does not need to be mounted to a table top for use though, in some cases, it helps to have it mounted. Most of my work is performed with it unmounted to a work surface.

                      By|Jan 7, 2020

I believe one of the kits comes with a clamp, this one doesn’t. However, you can easily clamp this jig with a metal clamp, it’s designed for it. I have never found the need for a clamp and do the drilling on my workshop floor

                      By|Jan 7, 2020

Clamping onto your bench or work surface insures that no movement will occur while drilling.

Clamping it just makes it easier. You don't have to though.

You can use this without mounting it or clamping it to anything. However, I have mine mounted to a board for extra stability and have seen other folks who have made trays where the wood you are drilling sits flush with the platform

                          By|Jun 24, 2020

Clamping is necessary to prevent jig from moving.

                          (1)

I clamped it. The pieces I were doing were long, so it made it easier only to clamp the wood to the jig and not worry about the jig moving.

                          By|Jan 7, 2020

The unit will sit flat, and this may work for really small work pieces, but i have always clamped mine, and I wouldn't imagine using it without doing that. There is a great surface just behind the riser to accept a clamp.

                            By|Jan 7, 2020

Thank you for your inquiry. For the best and safest use of the K4, we recommend clamping or screwing the Jig to your work space.

I would find it easier to have the plywood laying down and move the jig.

                              By|Aug 20, 2024

I don't believe there is a screw which would work in thin ply wood. This tool did come with an additional "jig" which I was able to clamp to 3/4 inch and it worked just fine

They make one for sheet goods that use with a clamp. I have one and very easy to use and works on all plywood thicknesses

I have not done that, but I do believe that would be easier. I have not used it with plywood.

                                    By|Jan 1, 2020

I have drilled full 4x8 sheets. I typically leave the sheet laying down & clamp the jig to the sheet & drill.

I had some difficult joints to make between two exposed joists and this tool really made it easier. I also built a base for a Farmhouse kitchen sink and it was so easy. Highly recommend this Kreg Product.

Best value. I have used the other Kreg pocket hole tools and this is the one you want. The smaller ones work but aren't as easy to work with and don't make as accurate and reproducible results. You can spend more too, but I'm not sure you get a much better product.

This is one of the best tools in my workshop. Over the last several years, I cannot count how many times I have used it to join wood for shelving or furniture with ease. The jig allows you to connect wood without using screws from the outside of the piece or dowels. It is easy to use; just set the throat collar on the screw and the guide block based on the thickness of wood. Drill the hole then screw into your piece. It works very well. The kit comes with the jig, a drill bit, a long square hex driver rod, bags of 1", 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" screws as well as a DVD and wooden pocket hole fillers. Of note, I never use the wooden hole fillers. I only use this jig areas that will not be visible such as under a table or shelf. The only directions that come with the jig is the DVD. I just watched a quick video on the internet instead. I do wish the jig came with a basic instruction/reference manual. Also, you will have to search online for the "Kreg Jig screw size chart" to know the proper screw to use. I added it as a picture to this review. I typically only join 5/8" and 2/4" boards, so 1-1/4" screws are all I use. The only problem I have with this jig is fitting it and its contents back into the case. It can be tricky.

I had an old generic jig that only worked on thinner wood, and rarely used it. I just bought this to do some 2x4 construction in the garden. I built this compost bin in about two hours, and those are some of the tightest, strongest 2x4 joints I've ever made. Now I've ordered some Kreg screws in bulk. Should have bought this tool years ago.

                                      KREG JIG FOR THE WIN
The Kreg Jig is a great tool and perfect for DIYers. It is very easy to use, after you have the thickness of your material you can set the jig correctly and within minutes you are drilling holes. The pocket holes allow you to create a simple way to join wood together. It is a very versatile tool and there are endless options on how you can use it. The kit comes with a Kreg Drill Bit and Driver bit which are needed to use the tool. One thing to note is this does work best with the Kreg branded pocket screws. I’ve used my K4 Kreg jig a number of times for projects around the house and I have plans to build a few pieces of furniture and this will certainly be put to use.
