A refrigerator outlet must be located directly behind the appliance space—typically 42 to 54 inches above the floor or recessed into the wall—so the plug fits in the compressor recess and the fridge pushes flush against the wall. There is no specific or exact physical location or height for a refrigerator outlet. The outlet must be located close enough to the refrigerator space so that it can be reached by the factory-installed appliance power cord without using an extension cord. Extension cords on large appliances are a code violation. Modern code versions dictate that all 125-volt kitchen receptacles require Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) protection. Even if the outlet is hidden behind the fridge, it must be GFCI protected if located in the kitchen area, and because a hidden receptacle behind a heavy refrigerator is not considered "readily accessible," code allows the actual GFCI test/reset buttons or breaker to be located elsewhere (such as at the electrical panel or via a visible outlet upstream).
