Questions & Answers

can I use a small torch used for soldering?

I have a small torch and tank that I never used for plumbing work like soldering. Can I use that to heat up the pli-stix?
Asked by: ted
I would say nothing is impossible, if you're only doing 1 inch it would work. More than 1 inch get a bigger torch.

What is better and why: this stick or sealer in jug?

Asked by: Piotr
I feel it is easier to put sand in the crack.. water it in... and use the sealer as this is much more labor intensive by melting in with torch however this seals better in the long run... it is the re applying that makes it take forever to fill up the crack properly

do you have to remove the plastic wrapping from the pli stix product?

Pli-Stix 2.25 lbs. 30 ft. Medium Black Driveway Crack and Joint Filler is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 169.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good product Not through the first winter yet but just my inspection so far suggests this is a far superior product to what I used before. It takes a little time to get it installed correctly and getting it to fit a narrow crack is difficult. I found that holding it above a tight crack while melting it allows for it to drip nicely in the crack and you can level the top edge better this way. Slow to use but seemingly super-effective.

I found out you could use a heat gun to melt it but the propane torch was much faster. I was tired of the water base stuff you buy in a bottle coming out every year.

Great idea however this product is very labor intensive to apply given you need to apply, re apply and re apply again and again as it shrinks after it cures fo the only way to fill up the crack is to constantly re apply...

Pain to shove into the gaps ahead of time, a small learning curve, but works well. The trick is to heat slowly, let semi melt and cool. Then come back and heat a 2nd time to get a good seal.

I've used this several times and it is much easier and quicker to use if you melt it in a metal can and pour it in or over the crack. Inserting it in the crack and melting with a torch takes more time and you actually start to melt your pavement as you try to melt the plistix. I cut the plistix into pieces and melted it in an old metal coffee can on top of a propane crab cooker and poured it over the cracks and spread it out with a putty knife. It didn't look real neat but worked well. Next time I might try smoothing it out with a little paint roller to see if I can get a better look on smoothing it out. The product seems to seal and fill real well and is more durable than the pour from a bottle type of product.

My driveway is really beat up, and certain spots are just spider cracks everywhere! The first couple of years I used the Latex-ite trowel patch. It works ok and goes on very smooth and nice, but being from Chicago, it doesn't last through the winter. It works by evaporation of water which causes it to shrink and eventually crack. I decided this year to try Pli-Stix since reviews were good. So far, it works amazing and looks great! I simply cut small sections and used my soldering propane torch to heat it up and melt into the cracks. I then used the Latex-ite driveway sealer (the cheap $16 stuff was fine) and covered over the Pli-Stix once dry. My driveway looks much better and I am hoping it will last more than 4 months.
