Q:Pump turn on but doesn't pump. I read directions, turn pump on and off many times. No luck. please advise.

Answer This Question

A:  If the pump comes on, meaning the impeller is spinning, and water does not move , you are most likely air bound. The volute where the impeller is located is full of air not water. It can not compress that air to push open the check valve. Thus it just spins and spins. Sometimes on new installs you need to open the discharge line slightly to allow this air to escape. Sometimes I even drill a hole in the discharge pipe, inside the tank. This allows air to constantly escape. Yes water shoots out during operation but it is into he tank .

Q:Can this be used for basement toilet waste?

    Answer This Question

A:  Really interesting question. The answer is no you cannot use this for a toilet. This unit would be what we call a gray water pump. Meaning it can move water that has become discolored due to things like soap. However it cannot move solids or semi solids. For those applications you need a more cable pump. Moving up from gray water pumps you next come to effluent pumps. Effluent pumps will contain semi solids. Then you come to sewage pumps. Then macerators and grinders. These pumps actually emulsify or grind solids into a slurry. Finally you get to what are called trash pumps that will move larger solids and rocks. This is not an official spectrum but it is the hierarchy as I have come to know it through years of plumbing. To move bathroom waster you want either an effluent, sewage, macerator or grinder pump. There are pros and cons to each.

Q:Hi, It's me again, does the pump work automatically or we need to turn it on and off every time it is used? Thank you!

      Answer This Question

A:  If you look at the side of the blue pump you will see a black plastic section. Inside is a rubber diaphragm with a pressure switch behind it. When the chamber fills with fluid it pushes against the diaphragm and switch. This turns the pump on. When the fluid has been discharged and the pressure is gone the pump turns off in reverse order. This style of switch has been used by different pump manufactures for more than fifty years. Unlike a float switch you do not need a lot of room in the chamber for a float to move so it can be more compact.

Q:Hi, can you tell me what is the maximum horizontal operating distance I need it for an outdoor sink: from the pump outlet to the floor level, then 2 feet horizontally, the floor rises 3 " then horizontally 15 feet and goes up to drain 6" Thank you

          Answer This Question

A:  First let me call your attention to the pdf of the specification sheet found under the header “Info and Guides” on the Home Depot product listing page. On the second page you will find a graph called a pump curve. All pumps have one. On one axis are different heights and on the other different flow rates. The graph illustrates pump performance at different heights; referred to as head. Please notice that at 0 to 5’ the pump will move 45 gallons per minute. This means if you are pumping horizontally or only slightly uphill the pump will move its most amount of water. Now if you look at the other end of the graph you will notice at 16’ feet of heat or lift, the pump will “dead head” meaning all the pumps power is being used to lift the water and flow rate has dropped to zero. Best practice is to calculate the total head and then find a pump where that figure is as near to the center of the pump curve as possible. Now most people will come back to me and say, what about the distance? I understand how logical that question is but in reality the friction or resistance created by distance is almost always insignificant relative to the force of gravity, which is why the height or head is always the big determining factor along with desired flow rate.

My husband installed it and didn't seem to have any problems. We hooked it up in the basement for our washing machine. Haven't hooked up the washing machine yet but do have a laundry tub hooked to it and when I use the laundry tub the pump only takes a couple of seconds to get rid of the water. So far I'm very impressed with it.
