About This Product

When building exterior walls with stone, stucco, brick, cedar, EIFS, or fiber cement siding, it is important to use an effective rain-screen system that will provide a means for drainage and ventilation. Moisture will find its way into these wall systems by way of cracked mortar joints, gaps or cracks in the surface of the material. Natural absorption of the wood or fiber cement also needs to be considered. Once this moisture penetrates the outer surface of the wall, it becomes trapped in the wall system with no way to escape, creating the perfect environment for toxic mold growth and possible structural failure. Mortairvent is a drainage and ventilation system specifically designed for use with most exterior siding materials.

  • 95% open design creates a continuous capillary break and channel for moisture to drain, accelerating drying of the exterior cladding
  • Durable polymer material is resistant to most known corrosive chemicals and helps reduce the risk of mold or mildew
  • Minimizes staining, peeling, and blistering of exterior finishes
  • Contributes to leed point
  • Simple and quick to install, easier and more cost effective than traditional furring strip methods
  • 2-ply design features a backer fabric that improves the tensile and compressive strength properties of the system, the fabric also serves to deflect mortar when used with stucco or a masonry veneer siding
  • Rainscreen system that will provide a means for drainage and ventilation for building exterior walls
  • Product thickness is 0.25 in.

Q:How do I choose between the 10mm, 6mm, or 3mm thicknesses?

Answer This Question

A:  I purchased the 6mm (about 1/4th inch) to give me the desired air space at an affordable price.

A:  As I understand it you only need a minimum of 3mm to provide a suitable rain screen. I decided to go 6mm. It’s the thickness Benjamin Obdyke uses for their similar product. A little more air behind the siding never hurts.

Q:I waterproofed my basement. However, the stairway leading to the basement is still leaking. The water is flowing all over the stairways and then drains down to the draining French channels that were installed at the bottom of the stairway. I want to finish the stairway floor with laminate flooring. I need to use something underneath the flooring to let the water escape underneath the flooring down to the draining french channels in the basement. If I use this rain screen, will it be durable enough to resist the weight of the people walking above it, or will collapse and cease to function? Is there any more durable matted draining mat that I can use underneath my flooring that can withstand us walking upon it without collapsing?

A:  No, this is for vertical surfaces only. For your application you'd maybe use Dricore (https://www.homedepot.com/p/DRICORE-Subfloor-Membrane-Panel-3-4-in-x-2-ft-x-2-ft-Oriented-Strand-Board-FG10006/202268752).

I really think this product will work over the long-term as described. Time will tell. It was easy to work with and easy to install. I saw it on PBS This Old House.

I haven't needed to use it yet. Purchase for a hunting blind. Anxious to get to that stage in the build.

          Correct use of rain shield
Excellent product to remove condensation from exterior walls. Warm air meets cold air between house wrap and siding material, in my case cedar shingles. NOTE: Every YOU TUBE application of a rain shield I have seen on YOU TUBE, including This Old House, shows installation backwards! The blue twisted strands (yellow for some brands) go against the house wrap! There is a flap of material on one side of the roll used for wrapping over the bottom open ends of the twisted blue fibers to serve as a bug screen. This system works great until you have an angled cut, I used 6" strips of landscape fabric to wrap around these exposed cut channels of blue twisted fibers and stapled in place.
