Is the an orbital or straight line sander?
Asked by: sawdust
Straight line sander, an orbital will have a circular shape more than likely and it would be considered a random orbital sander as well. Dewalt produces an excellent orbital sander product if you are interested.

Does this unit work with hook and loop 1/3 sheet sandpaper?
Asked by: Jambo
Thank you for your question. Yes, as long as this sandpaper has a Velcro bottom (hook and loop), it should work.

I've just order this BO3710 sheet finishing sander, and also just purchased the corresponding 5" Random Orbital Sander BO5041 at a local Home Depot. I would like to connect these to my existing wet / dry vacs without having to purchase a new Makita dust collection system (nice as it may be). I've seen a few attempts at this topic over the past couple of years, but not straightforward and useful answer. I'm hoping for a truly helpful response that can steer me in the right direction. With the dust bag of either of these two sanders removed, the exit port appears to be 3/4" outside diameter. In order to connect to an industry standard vacuum, I'd need something like a coupler with a 3/4" ID (to accept the 3/4" OD dust exit port on the sander) at one end, and a 1-1/4" ID opening at the other. A simple piece of slightly flexible plastic or rubber like this, perhaps 4" long (2" to go over the relevant pipe at each end) would completely solve the issue, and if rubber or soft plastic, we could use a finger-operated hose clamp at each end to make this even more effective. Is there any kind of adapter, at all, that can fit over the 3/4" dust exit port on these sanders, and let us connect to a standard 1-1/4" hose of a small wet / dry vac?
Asked by: Jonathan
Thank you for your question. Please see the 192108-A 3/4" x 10' Vacuum Hose which has a 3/4" inner diameter for connection to the tool, and a 1-1/4" inner diameter connection which fits most wet\dry vacuums.

As with the reviewer's review that convinced me to buy this sander, it is to replace a 45 year old Black and Decker zero option sander that has been a workhorse for me, to sand a softwood (redwood) deck with 2 x 6 boards for re-staining. The last time I rented one of the big, square, walk-behind sanders, but it was too hard to control the amount of wood removed, so I decided to do it "by hand". I wanted at least the same quality for longevity, and I think this will deliver. Very smooth operation compared to the old B&D; sandpaper replacement and hole punching is easy; sandpaper lasts much longer with the vent holes. I didn't really understand the dust vent system before I bought, but it works very well to catch much of the sawdust and prevent paper clogging to make the sandpaper last much longer, even though I am sanding old stain that tends to clog the old style sander. Project is going very well.

I ordered this one based on a review from someone using it for the same job I was. Actually the same deck finish. It is a well made, easy to use ergonomically and worth the $55 bucks

Low vibration and not too loud.Soft touch handles with large power switch and 7 foot long power cord. Nicely priced to have two with different sandpaper grits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best for specific task of sanding 3.5" deck boards I have to sing the praises of this product. Though it's called a finishing sander it's not only a work horse which took all the many many hours of heavy use I could put it though, it also has excellent ergonomics for gripping it in multiple different ways which cuts down on single position fatigue. I had to remove a prior coat of stain (Sikkens SRD Semi-transparent oil-based) that didn't take well the first time due to my application errors (basically too much moisture in the wood and air). I didn't want to use the 100 - 200 lb. commercial grade sanders since many reviews indicated they can do great damage to your deck, particularly cedar like I have, which is a softer wood. This Makita sander has a superb design in punching 2 rows of holes (with included punch tool) in the sandpaper through which sanded material is sucked into the little bag. This reduces clogging of the sandpaper thereby getting more out of each sandpaper sheet. Tip: Get more sanding sheets than you think you'll need. I went through about 45 on a 300 s.f. deck. Better to change them more frequently I found. 60 grit is the ideal courseness for cedar decking with this finishing sander. It opens the pours, but is smooth. The wood seemed thirsty for the Sikkens SRD stain after several dry days and using this sander with 60 grit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality for price more quiet and smoother to operate than expected. I really like the size, does a nicer job than the 1/4 sheet sander I have, and not near as heavy as my 1/2 sheet sander. If I try to use my 1/4 sheet on too large of a piece of wood, it sometimes leaves faint swirl marks, but the 1/3 sheet Makita does not. I have other Makita tools, and have had good luck with all of them.
