Definitely a five star product. Purchased to remove patches of failed paint from my deck. Ate right through the flaking paint and went down to clean wood with little effort. That being said, I did not have to strip the entire deck, only patches. I would expect a bigger model would be more appropriate for a major job, but for a finishing sander this is top notch. Unlike a couple other reviewers, I had no issues at all with paper slipping and actually the paper didn't even wear as much as I expected with this chore. The product didn't even tire out my hands and I am small and not super strong. Great product and tremendous value for the money. Very glad I purchased it and looking forward to having it in my tool chest for a long time to come. I've attached before and after pictures of a small section of the work.

    Stellar sander
I bought this sander mostly because it was the only one in the store and I needed to sand a desk I was building. I bought various grits of paper and ran this sander through the ringer over the course of a couple days. This sander is a trooper! It's easy to control, sandpaper retention is excellent, and the dust collection actually works! I am generally not a Makita purchaser (nothing against Makita but I usually go red or yellow!) and I probably would not have bought this particular sander had there been other options available in the store but I am very happy with its performance. Definitely a great sander!

      Broke way too soon...
Bought this tool at the local Home Depot to sand wood trim. Used it about 5 hrs over the course of two years; bearing cover which is integral to the floorplate disintegrated.

I'm no expert with sanders but I'm very happy with puchase. I'm using the sander to remove layers of paint from old door frames. Using coarse sand paper I was able to completely remove 3 layers of paint - top layer was latex and the two bottom layers were oil based. I was able to get to the bare wood. It did take some time but I couldn't possibly do it by hand. The puncher works fine. If you forget to punch the holes you will realize it once you start using it- dust everywhere. It is not dust-free even with the punch, but considerably less with the punched holes in paper. I've used for 20+ minutes at a time with no issues. Wear some kind of mask when sanding.

Great product. Have had almost a week. Easy to use and does an excellent job in tight spaces. Using this product to refinish an antique table. Love the easy hold and comfort of the sander. Easy to load paper on and exceeded my expectations.

This thing is a beast! I love using this sander. It does a better job of getting the wood smoother than any other sander I have ever used and I’ve had several. It is easy to use with a simple on/off switch. It is easily held and feels good in the hand. It does not wear you out with excessive vibrations or weight either. I have sanded for hours on end with this sander without feeling it in my arm afterwards. Replacing the paper is simple with the clamp. I can’t come up with any down sides to this sander. It is an excellent machine.

        Pleasure to work with
I managed to break 3 different sanders when I started my kitchen renovation. I used the Home Depot app on my way to the store to check the reviews. All decent palm sanders were $50, so price wasn't an issue. Based on reviews, Milwaukee was my top choice but wasn't available in store. DeWalt and Makita were my only options. Ridgid's reviews scored to low, I refused to consider it. DeWalt would of been my natural choice but Makita's reviews were higher. I examined both sanders in the store, Makita was much easier to load. The machine runs smooth and feels stout. I enjoy using this sander and will not hesitate to purchase another one.

          Great Finishing Sander
This sander is very easy to use. Loading new papers is extremely easy, you just have to make sure you have the papers secured tight enough so that they don't move around, otherwise it won't be as effective. it has metal bars to hold the paper down instead of rubber or plastic. This is a good thing because without them being metal, they can get looser over the time you use the sander, making it hard to keep the paper in place. The dust catcher is very effective and does not pop off while you're working like they do on some sanders. This sander had a little bit smaller handle than the others we looked at, making it easier to grip and move around, especially if you have smaller hands. It is also a little bit lighter than some other sanders - weight wise. I like the square sander as opposed to the round orbital ones because it is easier to get into corners with - and I have a lot of corners on my current project. It obviously isn't like a belt sander, but it's got a good amount of power to it. I've been working on a project where I'm sanding five layers of paint, dating decades back, off of boards used to build a built in desk in a kids bedroom. Why you would paint wood pink and other horrible colors, I have no idea, but we are sanding all the paint off so we can stain the desk. Stripper would be easier, but it isn't a well ventilated room, so we're sticking to sanding. With some work, this sander with 40 grit sand paper is actually doing a wonderful job eating through the layers of paint. When I get through most of the paint layers, I've switched to a 100 or 150 grit paper. That way the wood doesn't get chewed up, as it is very soft wood. The sander is powerful enough that it does a great job with tougher grit paper, and an even nicer job of the finishing work with a lesser grit paper. I've gotten a great smooth finish on the wood we have uncovered so far, and I have stained some of the drawers and it turned out great. I completely recommend this product as a finishing sander.

light weight, low noise, low vibration
I bought this sander to replace the older Makita model that I had used for over 15 years. I can purchase parts to repair the older model, but I needed another one right away to finish projects I was working on. I decided since the Makita had been such a great product that I would stay with the Makita brand and buy the new model. The paper holders on the new model were redesigned, which was a concern for me but they seem to hold the paper just fine and I've already put it through the test. I recommend this product to anyone who needs a 1/4 sheet sander. This is a very reliable brand.

            Light weight Low vibration, Comfortable.
I purchased this Makita Sander to replace it's older brother. Although I can order parts to repair it, I needed one right away to finish projects I had started on. This sander performs just as well if not better than the older model. Light weight, Low vibration and very comfortable to use. My only concern was the redesign of the paper holders. The older model has aligator teeth. This one has bars, but they seem to hold the paper just fine, and I've given it the workout. If you are in the market to purchase a finishing sander, I would recomend you buy this sander.
