I have a few questions about attaching pads: 1. What is the recommended pad type (stick on/hook and loop, etc.)? 2. Can this be used right out of the box or do I need to buy a pad attachment (for hook and loop pads)? 3. Can I use any brand (5") hook and loop pads on this? Thank you!!
Asked by: Walter
You will need just regular hook and loop pads for this sander. It does not come with any but all you need are the regular pads for it. I recommend Diablo brand pads. They seem to hold up better than most

I'm planning to refinish odd bedroom furniture pieces, all of which have seen better days. I am completely new to woodworking and am considering buying the 3 Amp 5 in. Corded Variable Speed Random Palm Grip Orbital Sander with Dust Bag. The sandpaper choices are confusing. Is this sander a good choice for a beginner? How do I know what grit sandpaper to use? I need to remove stain.
Asked by: Terry
Yes or will do the job, start with a larger grit and work to the small one you can buy smaller pack of them so you will just have to try some out but don't go to large I would start in the lighter side of them so you don't gouge the wood

Is this sander good for finishing wood projects that need to be stained or painted?

Asked by: Kelly
Yes, This sander was made for refinishing, start with 100+ grit discs, and move up to 200+ for a finish sand.

3 Amp 5 in. Corded Palm Grip Random Orbital Sander with Dust Bag, Hard Case is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 132.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! In an age where it has become all but impossible to find power ANYTHING made in the USA, this product delivers...well, assembled in the USA (greatly appreciated given existing competition). The dust collection bag works wonderfully and so long as you follow the instructions regarding frequency of emptying, the dust created was at MOST minimal. I feel this is impressive given the amount of sawdust which is created by this unit. After using the sander immediately after purchase, I will say some sanding pads I bought at a HD competitor (which also happen to be domestically produced) stuck to the sanding pad as if they were glued on. These pads work much better than the Diablo "variety" pack I purchased at HD. In the age of lost domestic industry, you may pay a LITTLE more for something made in USA, but I feel as though the product support and the people who actually produce the item are also easier to contact/understand/more accountable. Thank you Home Depot for carrying products which are produced in the USA and actually create/maintain jobs and domestic tax revenue. I am obviously a fan of the above.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Hold, Works Well I had previously been using a Ryobi sander when that one quit in the middle of a small job. The Ryobi, while a great sander, had a large grip that was difficult to use. I'm sure it works great for the average handyman, but I'm a handywoman with stubby fingers. I knew I wanted one that felt comfortable in my hand for long periods of sanding. I picked up each sander and this one felt the most comfortable to me, while staying in my price point. After a few uses, I can attest that it is far more comfortable, and I no longer fear losing grip on it mid-job. It does a great job sanding and it does not get hot even after an hour of use. The case is an unexpected delight. It's so much easier to store the thing now with the case and I worry a lot less about making a mess when carting it around the house or throwing it in my car.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome little sander, good price, solid build quality. I've been using a palm pad sander, and a larger half sheet pad sander for awhile now, I was finally sick and tired of working so hard, and blowing through so much sand paper, so I decided to buy a RO sander, and see if it did a better job. I was thoroughly impressed with the Makita, I went to HD to hold a few of the sanders, to get a feel for how the heft was, and if it fit my hand well. I'm usually a DeWalt guy, but their RO sanders felt a little big/heavy compared to the Makita. Also, the dust seal on BOTH of the DeWalt display models was worn and cracked, who knows how much they've been handled, but I wasn't willing to test that out for myself. The Makita weighed less, fit my palm better, and did a great job. I sanded down two 2x6's, a 4x4, and some 2x4's in record time, compared to my old pad sanders. It worked flawlessly, I just wish I hadn't waited so long to buy a orbital sander, made my job much easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is My Work Horse Sander We are renovating a 90 year old house and have refinished all the doors and trim throughout the house. I bought this sander after some extensive research. I have now used and abused this product for over a year now ( also purchased Model # BO4556K as a companion sander) and have been very please. This is what I consider to be my "work horse" sander. I use it for everything and have run it non-stop for countless hours. Some features I like: *it is simple (one speed, turn it on and go) *fits well in the hand and has rubber grip *sufficient power and does not bog down *Dust collection is decent - i like that the bag can be removed and a shop vac can be attached *switch is sealed in rubber - keeps dust out *Dust bag easy to empty Some things in which the product could be improved: *I dont care for the hard case (I don't use it) - would have preferred a bag (just my preference) *The dust collection bag will slip off sometimes After abusing the sander for 10 months I had wore out the edges of the sander pad (from forcing the edge into corners it could not go ;) ). I bought a replacement pad, which was easy to install. Still running like new.

I'm sure it would work on larger projects but it would eat through the sanding discs in no time.Good price/quality + a storage box. The box had some flash on the edges that made it hard to close, but trimming it off fixed it.Overall a great little sander.

I find that it fits my hand better. One downside is that there is no variable speed. The other competitors include it on their sanders. It is useful for polishing.
