Questions & Answers

Is this sander sufficent/pwerful enough for removing paint on a redwood deck?

I am sanding a redwood deck to bare wood with 60 grit sand paper. Will this sander easily handle the job? The deck is very large. This sander is called a finishing sander vs. a disc sander. Can it do the job or will I be sanding forever with it? Previous orbital sanders have done the job but they were called a disc sanders & had repeated problems with the hook & loop holding the sandpaper. Had to return 3 sanders already within a hours of use. NOTE: My sanding experience is extensive but have used only 2 brands of sanders. I cannot use a belt sander because it gives me tennis elbow in just a few minutes.
Asked by: Tarby
This sander is nowhere big enough for the job you describe. Look into renting a sander for floors and get a 60 grit paper to fit it.

How long does the hook & loop sanding disc (not the paper) last?

I have bought 4 orbital sanders (different brand) in less than 3 month. ALL have died in just 1-1/2 to 3 hours use due to the hook & loop disc - the paper just goes flying off the disc. Does the Makita do this? I do not want to have to return this one too. I have a job to do NOW. I am sanding with 60 grit paper on a painted redwood deck to the bare wood.
Asked by: Tarby
If you care for the sander properly, you shouldn't have to replace the disc to which the paper attaches. On this model, it has a velcro surface to which the sandpaper attaches. I have had no problem with the paper coming off, as a matter of fact, I have to work to remove it. Be sure you are thoroughly pressing down on the sandpaper before you begin work.

what is the tool case?

Asked by: ellen
Do you mean what is IN the case? If so, just the sander. It is a heavy-duty plastic formed case with handle that keeps your sander protected when you are moving it around.

what is a variable speed sander

Asked by: ellen
It means you can adjust the speed (RPMs) at which the disc revolves. This sander has settings from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Depending upon what you are sanding, you may find a variable speed sander useful. I've tried the various speeds on this one and pretty much keep it cranked up to 5 when I am using it.

I am a female who is inexperienced with power tools, in fact I have always found them to be a bit intimidating; however, I got sick of seeing paint drips and years of badly-applied paint on the woodwork in my 90 year-old house, so I decided to take the plunge. I did a great deal of research into types of sanders, brands, uses, and sandpaper. I arrived on the Makita, mainly for reputation as a brand and good reviews. I purchased several grits of sandpaper and went to work. MAN what a difference a sander makes! I will never sand by hand again. The 80 grit combined with the setting of "5" on the sander has made my doors and baseboards as smooth as a baby's behind. I had no idea what I was missing. There's nothing like having the right tool for the job. A word of caution about the dustbag: you must attach it correctly, or expect a good bit of what you are sanding to end up all over the room. Not the end of the world, certainly, but just be careful and save on clean up time. Keep the sander moving, clean out the bag often, and check your sandpaper to make sure you haven't worn it out and you are good to go.

I just use a hose clamp to hold the hose secure. I especially like the front grip on the sander. The sander is my fifth makita tool and all of them have exceeded my expectations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Wonderfully My kitchen cabinets had 52 years worth of shellac and grease on them (literally, I'm not exaggerating.) But they are beautiful and custom made so I wasn't going to replace them (so stop suggesting it Lucas!) But they are now white and I love them because this little sander and I make a mighty fierce team. You should buy it. That is all, you are welcome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makita, what else can I say... I researched all the major brands prior my purchase. Several good competitors left me a tough choice. However, the option of the adjustable/removable handle was my deciding factor. It paid off because I use the handle frequently when control is a must when operating the sander at an odd angle or upside down. I catch myself laughing at the ease, speed, and comfort using this tool. Can't believe I hand sanded all these years...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I had bought this one sooner I purchased this sander to replace my 5" Bosch random Orbit sander, which had given me nothing but problems. (Which was strange because I have a Bosch router that I want to be buried with) Anyway, this sander is quiet, aggressive and has great dust collection. If you need a random orbit sander, you wont be disappointed with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great Makita tool. Awesome Sander I bought this Makita sander after looking at pretty much every sander on the market and it works great. Very little vibration and it has adjustable speed for any size project. I would definitely recommend this Makita Sander to anyone thats in the market for a good quality tool backed by a great name.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A positive replacement This sander replaced a Porter Cable sander that was never as good as this one. In fact I merely tolerated it for several years even though it was a poor performer. I really didn't want to spend the money, but when it stopped working I had no choice. I haven't used the Makita too much yet, but when I have it's easy to tell that it's a quality product. While it is relatively light weight and easy to use (with the adjustable handle) it really gets the job done. Hopefully it will continue for years to come
