About This Product

Landscapers and contractors are demanding more cordless alternatives to corded and gas-powered outdoor power equipment. Makita is meeting demand with an expanding line of cordless OPE, including the Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Hedge Trimmer (model XHU02Z, tool only, batteries and charger sold separately). With zero emissions, lower noise, and considerably less maintenance, the XHU02Z is a welcome solution for trimming applications. The XHU02Z has a Makita-built motor that delivers 1,350 SPM and a 22 in. blade for increased cutting capacity. The XHU02Z will run up to 120 minutes on the low setting on a single charge using an 18V LXT 4.0Ah battery (sold separately). Cordless technology also means lower noise, and at only 87 dB(A) the XHU02Z is 25% quieter than other cordless hedge trimmers. It's part of Makita's expanding 18V Lithium-Ion system, the world's largest cordless tool system powered by 18V Lithium-Ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger.

Q:The manual says there is a "chip receiver" optional accessory available but I can't seem to find that product on Makita's website or anywhere else. Is there actually a chip receiver / clipping collector that's compatible with the XHU02?

Q:Is this hedge trimmer brushed or brushless?

        Answer This Question

A:  Literature does not specify that it's brushless. I have one and I see no where that you would access brush to change. I own a lot of Makita cordless and as a contractor use them daily and hard. I have never needed to change a brush

A:  It has a brushed motor according to Makita's website. As a general rule of thumb, if the descriptions and specifics don't mention if it's brushed or not, it's brushed.

A:  Thank you for your question on the XHU02Z trimmer. This tool does not use carbon brushes. It uses a DC motor Part number 629930-2.

A:  I don't know why MakitaTeam is claiming otherwise or mentioned "carbon brushes." Maybe the brushes are something else? It has a brushed motor accord to Makita's website. If it was brushless it would be listed in both the description and specifications.

                Another good Makita tool.
I bought this to replace an old, loud electric hedge trimmer. My old one still worked but I wanted something newer and not to be tied to an electric cord. I already was on the Makita platform so I bought just the tool only. This tool has very low vibration which I appreciate, its also quiet. It's a bit heavier than I thought it would be but thats because in hedge trimmers there is so much metal. For only being 18V it does a nice job cutting through some branches I thought it might struggle with. Using it on evergreens and the spiral tree I have is as easy as could be. But it will also cut through the bigger hedges I have on the property line with relative ease. The 22inch length makes quick work of some of the bigger plants. Only a couple issues I'd mention. This model does not swivel. In that you can't spin the handle, so you have to adjust your grip to change the angle. For my use it's not a big deal. However, if someone had a large amount to cut it would be nice to move up to the nicer model for that reason. Also it requires that three switches be used to operate it. Meaning you can't really hold a bush with one hand while trimming with the other. I assume this was done for safety reasons. So you push a button, pull the front handle and squeeze the trigger all at once. I've included a couple pics so you can see what I mean and also the size of the blades. Overall this does everything I ask of it and does it quietly and vibration free.

                  Strong and light weight
Strong light weight. It’s cutting through my redwood shoots that grow crazy. The battery lasted close to 2 hours. Crazy lightweight easy to handle. I was told to go with gas trimmers. This little guy does the trick.

This paired w/ 3ah battery will last about 45 minutes!
So I purchased this Makita hedge trimmer and I paired it with my 3ah battery. On full charge it will probably last about 45 minutes of nonstop work! I have used it for 15-20 minutes so far and it still has 3/4th battery charge left!

I bought this hedge trimmer because I already had a Makita drill with battery and charger that would fit this. It works great, like a magic wand. Battery lasts too. I recommend it.

This trimmer is awesome! Just as powerful as corded, more than some. I considered the 2 battery model. Not necessary unless you are a professional. I have trimmed big, thick and long hedges. Never ran out of power.

Powerful, relatively quiet, and smooth just like the typical Makita tool. Considering a battery hangs from the handle it's also not terribly heavy and also balanced well. The trigger is a bit cumbersome in the sense it takes you looking the first couple times to see where to line your hands up to engage it. It takes two hands, while it's not as convenient in some ways as my old hedge trimmer it does keep a person from using one hand to run the machine and using the other hand to say hold a branch where an operator may unwillingly cut into their own hand/fingers. I had thought about spending the extra and purchasing the 2x18=36v version but I'm happy with this one. It's lighter and I don't have a lot to trim anyway. I already had 6 other Makita 18v tools so adding this instead of another electric or gas version made sense. I kind of need a longer telescoping and angle adjustable one for the very top of my hedges to keep from using a ladder. Someday if Makita adds that tool I'd buy it. One con could be the scabbard for the blade is a bit of a hassle to put back on.

The Makita 22in Hedge Trimmer works well for its purpose. It makes quick and sharp cuts. Noise level is low and the run time on a 5.0A battery is adequate.
