Questions & Answers

Can these panels be easily cut to shorter widths or will they fall apart?

I have a 5.5' space & want to cut one of these panels to fit between two PT 4x4 posts. Can these be cut without falling apart?
Asked by: SmackArtVideo
The answer is 'yes' to both questions. They can be cut shorter, and if you're not careful, they will also fall apart! Tie a rope or use a pipe clamp vertically on the panel to keep the fence boards in place. There is no special joinery on the end caps, just cut the panel to size and reattach the end cap.

Is it better to install these panels such that (a) the posts sit in between panels or (b) the panels rest against another panel and are screwed into the posts (with the post 'behind' the panels)? The ends of the panels seem a little flimsy. Will they hold up best if we pre-drill holes and screw them into the posts, or should we use some other fastener?
Asked by: DD
These panels are designed to be installed between posts. Each side of the panel should be screwed to a post.

Can I use the 2 3/8 × 8 ft steel poles to attach or do I have to use 4 x 4 wood posts?

Asked by: John
You can use either post. I used the steel posts. Much more expensive and requiring tighter tollerances to assemble. So, i would attach one panel end to a cemented post and attach the other to the next post before pouring the cement, then repeating once that fresh post could hold the weight. I did one panel a day because the ground here is sandstone after 18". (Gotta keep the tools sharp with a grinder nearby). My input on the panels: They are somewhat flimsy and dont give me confidence they will last very long. Some of the rail edges are only 3/8" and expect they will be prone to splitting and separating from just the weather. Someone climbing over them will surely break something. They are assembled with staples and look like a rush job because half of the top rails are bowing up, due to bad stapling.. It will take some thought on how to straighten them out. Probably will try gluing them down? The steel posts are very sturdy when sunk 1/3 its length. I still need to seal them and hope the water stains will even out, once thats done. Once a need to replace them comes, there will be a steel post every 8 ft to deal with. They would have been spaced alot further apart.with a standard dog-eared fence, saving $30 per post. The 40+ yr fence they replaced was "hill & dale"(?) - (fence boards that fit together with tongue and grooves). They were ratty looking with peeling paint. But on examining them, those redwood planks are some quality wood - the kind of quality lacking in the new panels. Im going to put them to good use rather than throwing them away. Some were used to hold back dirt and dont have any bug or rot damage.

how far does the vertical ends drop below the horizontal bottom? Does this require additional lumber to fill the gap?

Asked by: Bwoodkid
I couldnt see the usefulness of the two outside rails being 4" longer, so trimmed those off and had the panel rest on top of an 8ft treated wood 2x4. I recommend using the extra 2x4 because that is easier to level and establishes the correct distance once attached to the steel posts. I had help lifting the panels into place and only needed to put them on top of the already leveled 2x4 before adding a few screws. You cant rely on the top of the panels to be level because of some warping, but the bottom 2x4 is reliable. Just eyeball it's length beforehand, for confidence in it's straighness. This helped assembly a great deal, so was worth the extra bucks. (What did they intend we do with those 4" extensions?)

This product is full of holes and knots the slats do not all touch because the wood is not cut straight. It does not look like the photo. Took hours to assemble. Very happy with quality!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Fencing! We just got done installing 6 of these panels down a hillside. The installation was fast once the posts were set. A more custom project was created because we doubled standard lattice sheets and framed them into rectangles for the bottoms (matching the tops) to fill in the slope and filled the rest with rock. Neighbors are all commenting how gorgeous it turned out and now enjoying privacy and a sound barrier from the busy street. Just wait until it gets stained! I want to add another 6 panels in another area and now just waiting for restock! Thanks to the Placerville, CA Home Depot store especially Jenna and their manager Sean for working on this with me, they've been absolutely wonderful!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful I used these panels to build a fence to block the view of my neighbors hideous yard. When it was all said and done, the fence looked amazing and was the envy of the block. So much so that 7 of my neighbors have built similar fences, although I applied a stain which has helped keep the wood looking fresh. THe panels are durable and look great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Home Owner I like it because it is stronger than vinyl and easy to work with. I have a corner lot and the wood is better for security. I wish it comes in 5' height. Grove

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install! We had a fence that was falling down and rotten, just plain ugly! We purchased 12 of these larger fence panels and 6 of the shorter ones for our front yard. These were very easy to install and they look great.Different neighbors have been complimenting us on a daily basis.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't feel like they will last long I have built many fences from scratch. This was the first time trying a pre-fab panel. The price seemed good, but any time saved in making cuts was lost trying to perfectly position posts since there's no room for error or settling. Also, the panels feel flimsy to the point that a child playing in the yard could very well throw a ball at the fence and break it. The panels look nice, but I don't feel confident they will stand the test of time.
