A:Â No, this is designed to be used with a gate opener. Solar powered gate openers require a battery for the solar panel to charge and if you live in cold weather you will need this battery heater to keep the battery warm enough to operate your gate opener.
The reason is that a battery works using a chemical reaction inside it and cold temperatures slow the movement of particles inside the battery to a point that it cannot be used. If you warm the battery back up the particles are able to move quickly enough to create the chemical reaction and provide you with a functioning battery.
TLDR: This heater keeps the battery from failing in cold temps.

Answer This Question
A:Â It is not recommended for solar applications. I suppose you could get around that by installing a much larger solar panel though. Here in Iowa, I gave up on the idea of using solar power for the gate opener and ran wire to the house instead.

Even though this product was supposed to work with the model that I chose, It does not fit in the battery compartment without bulging out the sides of the box. It also didn't come with the two sided tape that was supposed to be in the box. It doesn't even seem to do any good warming the battery as it is supposed too.

It has worked so far (November, 2016) and our temps have been freezing at night. The reason for 4 starts is that it was rather difficult to get this to fit against by batter and have them both fit in the plastic housing.

Tight fit but easy to install
The battery heater doesn't really fit into the housing without bowing out the walls but other than that it is easy to install. Will have to wait for the temperature to drop to see how well it works.
