Q:Sorry for the naive questions, but can someone clarify when to use a plastic level versus a metal one. Are the plastic ones less accurate? All of them have bubble level in a metal or plastic surrounding. Also when is the magnetic feature useful?

A: Plastic levels aren't any different from the metal ones You would use a plastic level on wood, plastic, light weight materials . Metal levels are used on metal materials ( such as steel, metal pipe, and other metal material), or installation of long length of pipe where a third hand to help level the pipe

Bubble is too small
I've been using a cheap level for years and was excited to upgrade to this highly rated metal level, and while the level is very well made with many nice design features, the bubble is much smaller than my cheap level with a lot of play in between the black lines. I tried to capture this in the attached images. The bubble for my cheap yellow level fits snuggly between the black lines, but the Milwaukee bubbles (all three) are much smaller allowing for a lot of play between the black lines, which will result in me needing to use much more judgement to size up the spaces between the bubble and both black lines. Seems not right that that would be the case. I have not found another review with this issue, so I'm a bit confused. In any case, I can't see using this level instead of my old level for this reason. Would appreciate a response from Milwaukee.

This Milwaukee I-beam level is perfect for those light jobs such as shelving, cabinets and some minor steel framing. I would like to had seen a stronger strip magnet and a paint finish more resistant to scratching. I didn’t feel the aluminum frame to be 40% thicker as advertised. Now with that said, this level performs very well. I really like the easy-to-read vials with quite distinct Pitch-Lines. As I’ve aged in the trades, these kinds of details I’ve come to appreciate.

Let me start off by saying this thing is built very well and just looks great with the finish it has on it. It seems very strong, but is still light enough to easily handle being it’s a larger level. One of my top favorite features is it’s magnetic strips on the sides so it can be held onto metal objects. This is very handy as I have to level several metal objects sometimes, and it just makes it so much easier. Like so many of my other Milwaukee products, this level is great and is built so it can stand up to either daily or occasional use. Highly recommended! Now I just need to complete the set with different sizes of levels.

It is well balanced and has a really strong magnet for working on metal surfaces - see pictures. The level bubbles are easy to read and the level has a lifetime warranty. Another great addition to my tool box.

The Milwaukee 24 Inch Magnetic I-Beam Level is a well-made, sturdy level. Unlike plastic counterparts, this aluminum level will not bend when trying to use as a straight edge. It provides a solid profile to use when determining if a surface is level or plumb. Openings on the frame are large and makes it easy to determine pitch or unevenness of the surface you are working with. This is a US made tool and seems to be a long-lasting tool for your collection.

Milwaukee Tool is known for high quality products and this I-Beam level is just another reason to keep on buying their products. This level is Made in the USA and built of quality materials. I have never had a level of this length before so right away I wanted to make sure my garage door was level because I replaced the springs during the summer. First I wanted to check the door tracks and they were fine and didn't need any adjustments. Then I checked the door bottom and top panels while the door was closed and open. I really appreciated the magnetic feature for hands free leveling and adjusting if necessary and the bubble window at the top of the level was helpful. I plan on doing some landscaping and I will be able to use the pitch lines when grading. All in all, I am going to get a lifetime of use from this and it has a Lifetime Warranty.

Great level. What else can I say. I really enjoy Milwaukee tools and this one is no exception. The bubbles are very clear and easy to read. There is a slot cut out for viewing the middle bubble when the level is not turned on its side. The magnet is probably the best feature. It is really strong. I had originally thought that the magnet would serve to simply keep it from tipping over and not offer all that much grip. But holy smokes, I stuck it upside down on a piece of metal in my garage and it snapped to the surface. No problem holding its own weight. Super impressed.

I received the Milwaukee 48 in. Magnetic I-Beam Level it is all metal frame yet it's light weight and build to handle use on the job site. The magnet edge easily holds it in place when used on ferrous metals.
The center vial also has 1° and 2° pitch lines you can use to set pitch for runoff. The vials have impact resistant covers to protect them for the occasional drop or other mishaps that we all know can happen. And like all my Millwaukee tools I really am liking this level.
They are also MADE IN THE USA with a limited lifetime warranty.
The end vial of this level rotates 180° for a range of situations. It is crafted from heavy-duty aluminum for rigidity and accuracy. A measuring scale is printed on the level.
