I loved this soil the first year and plants did great! Reused this summer and oven baked it to sanitize and added 1 cup compost to every 4 cups of last years soil, which resources on reusing soil recommended. My lettuce plants are not happy this year and keep dying from what appears to be too much water in the soil. Even after being careful and not watering as much, I still lost some. Would the water conserve features of the product be impacted by oven baking it to sterilize or does the water conserve feature only last for a certain amount of time? Thanks!
Not sure what temperature you baked it at but that could reduce the amount of water the soil holds but shouldn’t really impact it. I’ve had mixed results with this soil and find second and third years get a bit rough with growing
The coir in the product should not be hurt by the sterilization. Baking is not good as organic materials break down and you can get some odd organic acids that can be harmful to plants. All of the organic nutrient charge from last year will be gone.
can you start seeds in this
Yes, you can! I would suggest to add a little plant food mixed to this.
It’s not ideal, especially for small seed starting containers but it can work. You will just have to water it more compared to standard peat moss or coconut coir mix

I wouldn't recommend it. Aloe plant are succulents, it would be best to get cactus potting mix. Miracle gro sells this also!

What changes, if any, have been made to this product so that it is now described as “Organic and natural” rather than simply organic? I would not have purchased this product if I realized it had changed or that it was never actually organic.
I noticed this as well, not sure if the perlite makes it ‘natural’ while the other ingredients are organic
I’ve been buying this product for years and I haven’t noticed any major change in product, just a change in packaging.
Can you start vegetables with this soil?
Yes. The soil is fairly mild and will not burn seeds or small starter plants. Light fertilizer is helpful as plants develop.

Diana Walstad recommended the Organic potting mix in the orange bag that you have taken off the market for dirted planted aquariums for decades. It was very safe and almost perfect. How does this compare to that. Some of us are trying to find a replacement and it has not been easy. Nitrogen content? Ph balance? I do see you replaced the chicken litter with worm castings. What other changes are there?
