Is there a certain season or time of year that is best for testing the soil?
    ByJan 31, 2023

    Answer This Question

Fall or spring, to give whatever soil amendments you find out your soil needs time to do their thing. Many people wait until spring, but testing labs are usually more busy then, and consequently wait times are longer. You don’t want to wait too long, or you could risk running out of time to get soil amendments in place before planting. Also, if you live in an area with a really damp spring, fall may also be a better time, because collecting a quality sample from soggy ground is more difficult.

Depending on where you live, anytime is the right time to test your soil. We suggest testing soil in advance of planting season. This will give you time to amend the soil if needed before the growing season begins.

Have no idea. You can always contact the company to see but it probably be cheaper to purchase another test kit.

Unfortunately we do not offer the test tabs outside of the complete kits.

I've got a kit that's probably 20 years old (pills still sealed in foil). Will the test still be accurate? Are the pills too old (no expiration date on box)?

            Answer This Question

Thank you for being a Mosser Lee customer. Unfortunatly if your kit is 20 years old the remaining test tablets are no longer good. There is an expiration date on the end of each foil packet of tablets.

Majestic Palms grow best in a rich, well drained soil that retains adequate moisture. An acidic pH - as low as 5.0 is preferred. A mixure of two parts Mosser Lee Sand, two parts Mosser Lee Sphagnum Moss, and one part loam is a good start. Cactus Soil with a few handfulls of Sphagnum Moss may also be a good choice.

A Majesty Palm is like most palm trees and requires sunlight, water, and well-draining soil to grow. Sand-based soil is often best, as it provides for better aeration. Soil that’s too densely packed will impede development and thus affect the overall health of the palm.

Why not. The kit comes with enough for 40 tests or ten each for pH, potassium, nitrogen and phosphorous.

I am spending about 1300.00 for fruit trees that i will be planting this spring 2022. I have had issues with plants in the past. I learned my ground needs to have more sand and rock added so it allows water to drain. I don't know abt the PH & water needs

                      Answer This Question

First you need to dig up as much dirt as possible in the area you are planting. The planting holes should be a minimum of twice the size of the root ball or container. In the hole, mix in some gypsum (particularly if the soil is clay) and compost. This should be done as far in advance of the planting as possible. If time allows, repeat this every few days until planting time. To test if the soil is ready, fill up about half the hole with water. If, 12+ hours later, water is still standing in the hole, the soil is NOT ready. Continue the process until the water drains in, preferably, 12 hours or less - certainly within 24 hours.  Even if you have to return the plants, you would be better off than planting them in soil not amended and wasting your time, money and effort. Good luck on your project!

I used the Soil Master Soil Testing Kit to do a similar analysis before planting a new perennial garden. The kit was fairly easy to use. The results indicated we needed to add Nitrogen and Potassium, which we did and the plants did well. The kit was a lot cheaper and quicker than sending soil samples away for analysis. Hope that helps you with your fruit tree planting.

I live in South Lake Tahoe, I have found the test kit to be helpful. There are parts of my property that I believe were a dumpsite for concrete or paint... and the soil is different in different places. Water needs are pretty idiosyncratic depending on the soil AND the tree's needs. I find it's a trial & error thing. I'm going native so my trial & error period is only 2-3 years, then I let nature take its course (with a little help in drought).

You can use the soil testing kit to test the soil to see what it needs for the type of plants you are planting.

Different plants need different levels of N/P/K and what's high for one plant can be low for another. Is there a key available that specifies % N/P/K content for high/medium/low levels?

Your soil nutrient levels should be adjusted for what specifically is being planted. There is no key available that specifies percentages for high/medium/low levels of N/P/K.

Customers say the Mosser Lee Soil Test Kit is easy to use and provides clear instructions, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. Many appreciate the value it offers with multiple tests for pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. However, some users found the testing process to be time-consuming and noted that results can sometimes be inconsistent. Overall, the kit is seen as a valuable tool for understanding soil health and improving gardening outcomes.

The instructions are pretty easy to follow. However, if you're doing all 10 tests correctly, it is a very tedious process if you have a lot of land. You should wait the 24 hours suggested after taking the samples to let them dry out completely first. Also, because there are only 4 tubes, you have to rinse them out thoroughly after every sample to make sure you don't contaminate the next one. It is a pretty cool throw back to high school chem lab - if you're into that kind of thing! :) Bottom line - it did give me the data I needed to grow a lush green lawn and garden. I just had to dedicate part of my Saturday (collection and drying) and all my Sunday morning and afternoon (testing all the samples for pH, Ni, Ph and Potassium) to complete all 40 tests.

This soil test kit is exactly what we were looking for. It is easy and kinda fun to use and it gave us good enough results for what a homeowner would be looking for from a soil test. After performing the test on our lawn we were able to correct the deficiencies by using the appropriate fertilizers and products. We still have plenty of tests remaining from that kit so it's great value for money! Give it a try.

The Mosser Lee SoilMaster Testing Kit (model # ML1210) is an invaluable convenience for serious gardeners or lawn aficionados, but may seem a bit complicated or overwhelming for beginners or casual "weekend" gardeners to use successfully. My wife started gardening about two years ago and when her first efforts at growing vegetables and herbs didn't yield the results she was hoping for, she attended a few gardening workshops. Invariably, every class started with the admonition to test the soil. She was referred to the local university extension and master gardeners program to get a professional laboratory soil test, which sounds great, but requires sending a soil sample off in the mail and then waiting a week or more to get the results. The lag time can be a serious disincentive for hobby gardeners who just want to get on with planting. So when we found the Mosser Lee kit that allows you to test the soil by yourself when you have the time and not have to wait for results, my wife was eager to try it. We were especially pleased that a single kit includes 10 tests each for pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. What we liked: comprehensive instructions (well-written with helpful illustrations) printed in booklet format on laminated paperboard, so when you invariably get the booklet wet or dirty, you can just wipe it off. That may seem like a minor benefit, but when you're working with soil and water, it's essential. What we found frustrating: the process is not exactly fast or easy. Since you need to use dry soil, they recommend collecting soil and letting it dry overnight. This frustrated my wife because it extends the total elapsed time necessary for the test. The kit also assumes you have a few basic household items on hand (several plastic bags, a permanent marker to label the bags, small paper cups, plastic spoon(s), and three measuring spoons -- tablespoon, teaspoon, and 1/4 teaspoon -- that you can dedicate to soil testing.) They also assume you're ok with pinching the top of a paper cup to form a spout in order to pour soil solutions into the test tubes. We found using a mini funnel was easier and more accurate.

I really like this soil test kit. It is great value and offers 10 tests for each of pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. - The tubes are well made and the caps are color coded to match the test being performed. - The tablets are well labeled and packaged such that you can use some and keep the rest for future use. - Instructions are clear but may be overwhelming if you try to read everything all together. Just follow the instructions step by step and you should be fine.

So far, so good. I have wanted a chemical test to verify the accuracy of an electronic combo tester. This test set has more soil testing options than I was originally looking for, but it is great to have the options. The directions are clear and simple to follow. Also, the guide is printed on heavier, slick paper and appears that it will hold up over time. The tubes and caps are heavier duty than I expected. I was concerned that they'd be flimsy, but that is not the case. To my original purpose for getting the test kit, I did a pH test on a potted plant that has been struggling. My electronic tester showed a pH of 7 and this test kit confirmed it. The attached picture shows the tube against the provided test color chart.

I received my soil test kit a week ago. I have a greenhouse , so I thought I should test my soil. My plants have been growing since May. It sounded a bit complicated when reading it at first. But I gathered my soil and stuck to the directions. Water , soil and a pill or 2 depending on test. I did the test for PH, Nitrogen , Phosphorus, and Potassium. It seems I am high on the PH, medium on the Nitrogen and Phosphorus and Potassium. I did not understand why the water is a peach color on Potassium and they want you to compare it to grey to black on the chart. I feel like a chemist. I'm still not sure what to do about it. I will keep reading.
