Q:What is the spacing between the holes? (Center to center)

Answer This Question

A:  Hello Aaron, As stated in second bullet, the distance between holes, center to center is 1.69 in.

by|May 3, 2021

A:  The holes on this product are approximately 1 1/2 inches apart on center. Be advised that although it may be difficult to observe from photographs of the product, the bolt holes are hexagonal. If you are unable to thread your fasteners through from the opposite side, look for something more suited to your purpose or adapt. (In my case I drilled the threads out of some hexagonal nuts and set them in the holes so I could insert my lag screws and tighten them securely.)

A:  I purchased this product four years ago, but my recollection is that as the buyer, you selected the number of docking cleats you needed and they were then packaged for shipping. I took a few weeks for mine to arrive and I don't recall opening any off-the-shelf packaging such as vacuuformed plastic or paper bearing a brand logo. I'm not totally sure. I am sure that I got on Home Depots' online chat help to find the answer to this myself, and that is what I would recommend.

          8 Inch Galvanized Cleat
I received a 1 original 8” dock cleat. It is perfect for application around the house to secure ropes and other items that need to be hung up in the garage or shed. This 8-inch cleat is an iron casting with a coating of galvanization to support wet outdoor applications. This design of the cleat is 8 inches because there are many different size models. It has a Galvanized coating which ensures the durability of the iron cleat. The dimensions are shown in the attached pics attached. This cleat is designed to be bolted into place, you can not use a lag screw unless it has a small bolt head. The cleat has 2 hexagonal recessed holes to hold the hexagonal bolt captive once the hexagonal bolt drops into the pre-drilled hole you can not turn the head. To tighten the bolt you have to have access to the threaded end to tighten up the bolt. Like on a wooden deck, you can use a washer and wood or concrete screw but all the work put into the casted hexagonal hole has very limited applications. It is solid cast iron with a galvanized coating to protect the iron cleat. The clearance between the bottom and where the rope raps around the cleat is 1 inch and will handle up to 1-inch diameter rope. The space between the pre-drilled holes is 1 ¾ inch apart, and the height at the center of the cleat is 1 ½ tall

          Secured my sun sails.
Superior quality and a good mixed use product. I am using this to secure a set of shade sails on my deck. We are wrapping nylon braided cord and rope around this base. I could see this being used on a boat dock, or a kayak launch, on a deck, or holding down shade sails- serious quality and utility with this product. Simple install with two longer screws.

          Heavy Duty Cleat
When ordering this I thought this was a two pack but only one was shipped, but other than that the cleat seems to be well built. The cleat from Multinautic is solid steel with a heavy galvanized coating that should last a good while in the salty air here in Galveston. Installing the cleat will require that you have access to the bottom of your dock as the holes for mounting it have a recessed bolt pattern. You could always use a large washer with a lag bolt to tighten it down if access under your dock was not feasible.

          Very Solid Cleat
This is a very solid 8 inch cleat with some interesting design features. It allows for recessed 13 MM bolt head but the design assumes that you will have access to the bottom of the cleat because you would not be able to tighten the bolt head otherwise (see pictures). It is not supplied with hardware. I ended up using screws because my application as a rope cleat on wood precluded access to the opposite side. You would need at least a 2.5 inch bolt due to the depth of the cleat. I expect it will last a long time.

          Hello DickB,
Thank you for your review. This particular cleat can be used on a dock with wood decking, using a bolt through the top, with a back plate underneath - from where the nut would be tightened. The depth of the bolt would be determined by the thichness of the decking, backplate, and anything else through which the bolt would pass. The reason that we do not supply hardware with the cleats is because there are too many variables as to how to attach it - depending on the surface type, surface thickness, etc. multionline

          Durable 8" dock cleats.
I found the 8 inch " original " cleat from Multi Nautic to be a well made product. Presently I am refurbishing a pontoon boat and it lacked any secure way to attach dock lines or bumpers. These cleats are just what I needed. The cleats will accommodate dock lines up to 1/2". They are Hot-Dipped galvanized to resist rust and corrosion, so they should hold up to the elements and last for a long time. They are designed to be secured with 5/16" bolts ( not supplied ). They have a recessed mounting hole to accept and hold the hex head of a 5/16" bolt. This not only provides a finished look but is helpful when installing. I will be purchasing a few more to continue with my project.
