NewTechWood Nature's Friend Line of Suet Feeder is made completely out of cut off from our manufacturing line. All the boards will have our great Ultrashield technology to keep the feeder the same color as the day you bought it. These feeders are environmentally friendly. Because it is made from cut offs we cannot guarantee the color of birdhouse that you will get, it will be brown or gray. These boards are made from recycled material and are being reused for another purpose.
I like the idea of recycled products to build these bird suet feeders!!
The upside down design does not seem to bother the birds, especially the wood bug eating birds.
It is easy to open and refill with a thumb screw. Being upside down it helps keep the rodents away !!
With the temps in the 90s it works well at keeping suet from melting. And it goes along well with
the seed feeder and a suet basket with non greasy suet !! See photo.. I recommend
Nature’s Friend Suet Feeder is made of recycled composite cut offs/ material that feels and looks extremely durable. The feeder is heavy, about 3.5 lbs, but feels heavier. It has a thick wire hanger with excellent grade hardware connecting to the feeder. The best hanging hardware I have seen on any feeder! The feeder is designed for woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches and any other birds that feed upside down. The finish quality is excellent. It looks like wood but feels like higher grade sturdy materials. With this feeder being so well made, I was very disappointed to see how cheaply made the wire grate is and the 3 tiny staples that attach one end of the wire grate to the wood frame. After all, it is very important to have high grade material as well that actually holds the suet! To open the feeder you turn a very sturdy lever on the underside and more or less bend the grate down in order to insert a suet cake. I don’t foresee those 3 tiny staples lasting very long due to breakage, or the grate either. Small hinges or screw eyes and wire hoops would allow the grate to swing down out of the way without bending/breaking the grate or the hardware. That is the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I have been an avid bird feeder for 25 years, using numerous feeders and I foresee repair or replacement of those 3 tiny staples and the grate in the very near future. The greatest thing is that the materials are recycled! I would recommend this suet feeder due to its weather resistance and durable materials but with caution due to the quality of the grate and the manner of attachment.
If you have woodpeckers, chickadees, or any other birds in your area that can hang upside down at feeders, this is probably the nicest suet feeder you can buy for the price. The idea is that squirrels and non-native birds like starlings won't feed upside down, so you'll only be feeding the birds you want to. However, I had to put mine next to an open cage-style suet feeder, with this one above the cage feeder, to get birds to notice it initially. The fact that the suet is completely covered means it won't get wet and moldy either.
Overall the feeder is very attractive and solidly built. It's pretty heavy so I needed to hang it from a shepherd's hook on my wood fence. You don't need to remove it to replace the suet - just flip the little silver lever to release the cage (see photo). Plus I like that it's made from recycled materials that seem like they'll hold up well with the weather.
This is a nice well made item and not too expensive. I have had it a month and it has not worked out for me and my birds. I have even changed out the suet cake flavors

Unfortunately none of the birds seem to like the feeder. I had 2 birds in the past 2 months actually cling to the feeder. I don’t know if it is the design and they can’t see that there is a suet cake in there or what. If someone can give me some tips I would be delighted to listen.

Only one latch to secure the grid below. The squirrels bent the grid and took off with the cake within 48 hours of use. Poor design.

The composite housing is top quality. However, the plastic grate used to hold the suet in place broke the first day. We have many Scrub jay's and Northern Flickers. The grate was not strong enough to hold the birds while they ate. We puchased to keep the Starlings from stealing food. We will need to find a new way of placing some sort of grate on the housing. I paid too much for something that needs to be remade in order for it to do its job.

Great little feeder!
First this is composite material so it should withstand years and years of all sorts of weather. Open the box and it's ready to hang. The suet is placed into the bottom of the feeder, so the little roof protects it from rain, snow and ice. Plus, the woodpeckers seem to prefer to eat upside down! A little 10ga wire swivels to open or securely close the suet cage.
I am using melt proof suet, and only using the feeder from noonish to 4pm, because the black are running all over the place right now.
Impressive feeder, buy with confidence!
