          Great Outdoor Picnic Table.
The Picnic Table is similar to those found at State and National Parks. Fits to 6 or 8 adults on the benches and then you can add two people on chairs at the ends. The picnic table has a table top surface of 27-1/2in by 71in long. When you include the bench seats, the width is 59in wide. The top of the table surface is 28 1/2in off the ground. The basic construction is based on 2x6 (1-1/2in x 5-1/2in actual) boards. There are smaller boards used in holding the parts in place. Most attachments are held together by 2-1/4in screws. The wood benches are supported by two triangular frames of 3 boards each that are bolted together. The frames are then attached to the table top with screws along with a brace board. The boards for this kit do not appear to be Spruce or a hardwood. The description on the website is that the boards are Treated Lumber by the ProWood process. My understanding is the boards are soaked in the preservative chemical and then Kiln dried. The long edges of the boards are rounded so that they are more comfortable when set upon or when touching the boards. The boards also come sanded and ready for stain or paint. In this kit, the boards do have knots but they could be arranged so that they did not interfere with usage or aesthetics. The directions give you the concept of arranging the boards so that the blemishes are out of site when the table is finished. The boards are said to be “Pre-drilled.” The holes for the 8 bolts are obvious. The holes for the screws are not obvious as they are tiny. It is more like a thin metal nail was pressed into the wood and then removed. Once you see these tiny indentions, it is easy to align the screws to these holes before fully screwing them in. This tiny hole helps the screw to stay straight. The screws used for the table are a bit unusual. Near the head end of the screw is a abrasive raised surface that probably helps the screw from unscrewing through flexing during use. Most of the screws attach through the back side of the boards so the heads are not visible from a top view. The seat boards are an exception in that the screws connect through the top surface. The seat boards attach to the leg braces with a 2x4 board that stick out on each side of the brace. The seats attach to these two boards. Aesthetically, this 2x4 board is on the outside (toward the table ends) of the legs. This means the seat could sag down when people sit on it. To reduce the sag, the support boards could be located on side of the leg boards that is closer to the center of the table. It is not much (only 3”), but it might allow better balance when the bench is filled with people. When fully assembled, the table is very sturdy. If you are placing the table on uneven ground, you will probably need to shim one of the 4 legs to return to being stable and shim 2 legs if you also want to be mostly level. The table is also heavy due to the weight of the wood. Kiln drying reduces some of the weight, but the table is still heavy. 2 of us (both strong) were able to move the assembled table without too much trouble. I am assembling the table without painting the boards. I am planning to take the table apart and Fill holes, stain, seal, and paint the table top wood. I am also planning to use a light tan color for the table top so that it does not get hot in direct sunlight. If you like the wood color and finish, a Varathane Spar Urethane paint works nicely. I plan to test the complete finish on some of the brace boards before applying an overall finish. The company documentation suggests using multiple colors to enhance the look. E.g. table top tan and legs and seat are a red-brown. Assembly did not talk too long. It was about 2 hours. I used a 2x4x8in piece of wood under the table top to make sure the top surface boards were tightly touching the attachment board before starting a screw into the hole. If you are planning to apply a paint or finish to the board, I would recommend that you start a screw about 1/4in into each of the screw holes before painting. This will leave a big enough dent in the wood to find the screw holes under the finished surface.

Good looking product that is fun to assemble
The kit arrived well packaged and undamaged in three separate boxes each of which can be handled by one person. Good assembly instructions are included plus there is a video on the manufacturer’s website showing the step by step assembly process. It took the wife and me about 2 hours to unpack and assemble. All pieces were precisely precut with pilot holes predrilled for each of the 80 screws and 8 carriage bolts used. The table top, seats, and legs are all cut from 2 X 6 inch lumber resulting in a very sturdy table that will seat 6. The lumber is good quality pressure treated pine with few knots ready to paint or stain. I preserved it with transparent water sealer that worked well and will keep water from penetrating for a while. I also cut 2 X 4 scraps to put under the table legs to avoid contact with the ground. I like the exterior grade fasteners with tan colored screws to match the natural wood color. The seat corners are rounded off to remove sharp points but you may also want to round off the corners of the table top after assembly. Note that a torx drill bit is needed to drive the screws and a half inch wrench to tighten the carriage bolts. Think it is an excellent product that is good looking and fun to put together.

Steve, thank you so much for your wonderful review! Outdoor Essentials really appreciates it when other DIYers share their experience so that future customers can have a better installation experience. We just want you to know, the legs are pressure-treated for ground contact, so you do not need additional 2 x 4 scraps installed under the legs. We apologize for not including this in our product description previously, and we are looking into getting this added for future customers. Thank you also for all the great pictures of your completed project so that others can see all the fine details of the Homestead Picnic Table! If there’s anything else we can help you with, please e-mail our customer service department at CustomerService@OutdoorEssentialProducts.com, and one of our representatives will be happy to assist you.

Although I negotiated a discount on this purchase, I was disappointed in the quality if the components. Most of the boards were warped, something expected from the item priced at $149.00 but not this one which was originally priced at $499.00.
