Will I need A stronger spring with the added weight of the kit? I have no door opener.

    Answer This Question

Hello Jeff, we would advise that you check with your garage door manufacturer or installer regarding any weight concerns and/or questions regarding balancing or resizing the springs. Typically, when installing the kit as intended, for one standard door, the weight of the kit should not cause any issues. The individual panels weigh approximately .75 lbs. per panel, or 6 lbs. per kit.  Thank you for your inquiry.

I have 1 big door for my 2 car garage. The inside of my door is flat as my door is a little thicker. It doesn’t have any place to tuck the panels in as the door panels are each 1 piece across.

        Answer This Question

Hello StanR, Owens Corning Garage Door Insulation Kit will not work with this type of door. It needs the channels to help support the door. Owens Corning does not have an insulation product we would recommend for this type of door. Based on your description, it sounds as your door may already be insulated. We suggest checking with the garage door manufacture to confirm and see if they have recommendations. Thank you for your inquiry!

What is better to insulate a garage door- fiberglass or styrofoam?
            ByAug 15, 2024

            Answer This Question

Hello JCha, Owens Corning does not manufacture styrofoam. We do however manufacture Foamular. Owens Corning Foamular products and all foam plastic insulation products are combustible and must be covered by a 15-minute thermal barrier such as 1/2" drywall. We do not recommend using Foamular to insulate a garage door. There are better choices such as the Owens Corning Garage Door Insulation Kit. Thank you for your inquiry!

Either choice carries a probability of unbalancing the door. If the door is balanced when it is not insulated, even the lightest styrofoam will make the door heavier than the springs are designed to handle.

How well does it keep temperature down in hot florida sun in summer

                Answer This Question

Hello Sandra, Owens Corning cannot provide a specific temperature drop that adding the Garage Door Insulation Kit would provide. There are too many factors to take into consideration. Factors may include the internal temperature, the external temperature, air leakage, etc. The Garage Door Insulation Kit does provide a R-8 for thermal value. Thank you for your inquiry!

I live in the Orlando area, and installed this in my 2 car garage door. My garage door faces south, so I could feel the heat radiating from it…until I installed this! I have a Wi-Fi thermometer in my garage, and temps have dropped >20 degrees!

I installed 2 boxes by myself after watching 6 or 7 videos on YouTube. I also added a thin double reflective layer on prior and used white duct tape to beef up the side that didn’t have a channel to get tucked into.

                      Solid option
Solid insulation kit. Got lucky and insulation fit without need for trimming. Took others advice and heated the 3M tape but also added some gorilla duct tape as pictured for added security. Took about an hour including cleaning garage door where tape goes with rubbing alcohol to ensure tape stuck. Would recommend.

So far so good, little trick with the 3m tape
So far so good and already making a difference on the temperature in the morning in the garage. The trick with that 3m tape is to hit it with a torch lighter until you see it start to bubble before sticking it to the surface. This makes the 3m tape significantly more sticky/permanent. First Prep door and wipe clean, I used 50/50 alcohol/water spray and waited for it to dry, then hit the 3m tape with the torch lighter before sticking to clips, then again before sticking clips to door.

We purchased 2 kits for our garage. Within MINUTES of installation there was a significant difference in the garage. Our garage is 625 sf, walls and attic above are insulated. We placed a window unit in here after installation of these kits. Temp in garage was 90 degrees and within 12 hours there was a 10 degree drop and within 24 hours it stayed steady at 73-75 degrees. I am floored at how just added these insulation kits changed our garage. We shut the AC off while on vacation and come home to a garage temp of 78 degrees. It drastically aided in temp control and sound control. I had no idea of the noise level until we installed these. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Super easy to install. overall 1 hour to install both kits.

Really easy to install. Ignore the cloth I put on metal joints. That's a different product ?

                          Works with modifications
Like many others have stated, the clips are junk and won’t last more than a few months if you use the garage door daily. I tried different brands of tape and they all ended up failing too. A solution that worked for me was to use 3/4 pipe strapping and securing it to the metal panels with self tapping screws. This has worked out very well for me and only adds a few pounds to the door.

The instructions on the box could be better, but the YouTube video is very good. "You can do this in an hour" --- hahaha!! I don't think so!! The instructions should include prepping your garage door, as it's probably dirty. There's a lot of measuring and marking to do, which takes forever. Then you have to put up the sticky pads, which are hard to peel the backing off of. There should be more support posts per panel of insulation than just 2 -- at least 1 more. Is this stuff really going to last long enough to justify the cost? I had to buy 5 kits to cover 2 double-sized garage doors! It took me 3 afternoons to install it on one door. I had to cut all the pieces length-wise, and it cuts easily with scissors. I did it by myself, and it looks good. I hope the cats leave it alone.

DO NOT BUY - PLASTIC ANCHORS ARE CRAP
I bought two of these kits to insulate my garage door to help keep my garage warmer in winter and reduce heat gain in summer. That is the only part that woks, but it doesn’t work if the panels don’t stay secured to the garage door. I really wanted to love this kit, but the included plastic annchors are total crap and they will not stay attached to one another. 1. They are too loose, 2. Poorly designed, and 3. Made from the wrong plastic as they do not hold their shape and easily deform, plus they have no strength. Go ahead and buy it. Follow the instructions to the letter and you will have missing anchors. They will fall off while you are leaving or coming home and you will run over them. Then they are destroyed. Are extras included in the box? No or not enough. After the anchors fall out so will your insulation. Pretty soon your nice neat installation will look like a tornado ran through your garage. Buy at your own risk. Why don’t people test this stuff out before releasing it to the market? I resorted to taping mine ip with white duct tape. I shouldn’t have to do this. Look at all my missing anchors! >:-[

                              great garage insulation
Live in south Florida and my garage door gets hit hard during the afternoon from the sun. This helped tremendously with the temp in the garage. I didnt have to use the plastic tabs to secure it due to my garage door having the braces. Which hold the insulation in place.
