Questions & Answers

Does any one have issue/suggestion about the door's weight increased?

If i install the kits, is it have to be make the adjust on the garage door? I am wondering if this is worth to spend almost $200 plus i don't know how much it costs for the garage door adjustment. Thanks
Asked by: kevin
This product absolutely will add about 12 lbs. to a two car garage door. It is highly recommended that the springs, at the very least, need to be adjusted. If you have the standard 90 lb. springs, adjusting them tighter will shorten the life of the springs and add stress to an existing opener. It is recommended that you replace them with 110 lb. rated springs. The door will be balanced better for manual operation ( power outages ) and reduce the extra stress on the opener from added weight. And also have a professional do it. A good pro will also lube the hinges and rollers as well as adjust the belt or chain if needed.

I misread and for my post, I confused Stew with BDC6868. It was BDC6868 that actually furnished the great advice. Please forgive the mistake.

Can this be installed in a living garage space? Is it harmful to breath?

Asked by: Omar
I wouldn't do it unless you put some sort of barrier over it to seal any fiberglas dust from getting where you could breath it in.

Garage Door Fiberglass Insulation Kit 22 in. x 54 in. (8-Panels) is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 128.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps it cool… Measure! Have a table to work on. Have some long 48" yard sticks! Watch the youtube videos. Doing all that will help you ace this job. It's not hard and the results will be worth it. DO make sure you use a NEW blade when trimming the insulation. It cuts easily, but the vinyl backing will be jagged, unless you got a fresh new blade. I also used a spray adhesive Loctite13.5 fl. oz. Professional Performance Spray Adhesive that was applied right before I put up each panel on to the garage. I then used aluminum tape to seal the edges down. I have a few panel sides left to go, but the image will show you how it looks. Don't forget to increase the power on the garage lift. Overall the package doesn't add a whole lot. I did immediately notice how much quieter the door now opens and closes. This summer hopefully the garage won't be 110 degrees with the East sun facing metal door! NOTE: The tape nor the adhesive spray are not REQUIRED to do this job. I just went beyond what was needed to really make this job better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for a basic metal door I had a basic metal door which attracted a lot of heat from the sun baking on it all day. While only 70-80 degrees outside, the garage was at least 10-15 degress warmer and you could just feel the heat as you walked closer to the door from the inside. We got this because our dog uses the garage as her room and we keep her in there when we leave. The difference is night and day. I decided to get a roll of white masking tape and tape all the edges to the door and any seems. This was because all the movement of the door would create fiberglass particles floating in the air which you could see from the sunlight. Now it is completely sealed, no more fiberglass specs floating, and it matches perfectly with the white facing of the insulation and is much more secure than just using the clips provided. I absolutely recommend doing this when installing this product, yes it doubles the install time, but still a 2 car garage door using 2 of these boxes will take less than 2 hours and it is worth it if your door faces the sun.

The insulation material and plastic faced on one side was the expected product and quality. The big down side and why I only gave it two stars is it falls off when I open the door (hangs from the 16 provided clips). What would have really helped would be making it 23" wide and including some sort of additional clips to keep the edges form pulling away from the door. I'll purchase some duct tape to mount it better. I really expected better from Owens Corning.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Retainer clips fail after 3 years This was a wonderful product for the first 2 years. After that, the retainer clips that secure the insulation to the door loosened and began to fall out one by one. The stick pads held, but the plastic must have warped and the two clips no longer clamp together tightly in about half of the clip pairs. Over the next 2 years, fallen clips were lost or run over until now, 4 years out, I have only half of my clips and the insulation falls off when the door opens. I would recommend this if you were to do something fairly simple. After 2 years, push back the insulation at the retainer clip and wrap a wire twist tie around the stem of the clip (with both clips engaged with each other). This will hold the teeth of the two clips together and they will stay together. I'm trying this now, so I don't know if it is a long term solution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from exactly as advertised The insulation came neatly packaged with all the parts needed. Once installed, I could instantly tell the difference in the noise level. It actually reduced outside noise! The insulation was installed on a day where the temperature was 100 degrees outside. My garage door faces the west and gets hammered by the late day sun. After installation, the temperature inside the garage was at least 15 degrees cooler (or more) than outside!! By 6 pm, the garage was very comfortable and my vehicles were cooler than before the insulation was installed! I am VERY pleased with this product and recommend to all who wish to reduce heat/cold and noise!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst idea ever. I read the reviews and bought two garage door kits for west facing garage doors believing 1) they would help reduce the heat 2) would be easy to install because they are a kit for a garage door. 1) there might be a slight difference during the day but the bigger issue was the garage did not cool off after the sun went down so the garage did not get cooler. 2) the insulation keeper taps do not stick i have had different ones come off every other day. The insulation comes loose and when it does near the bottom it trips the garage door stop. I had to tape the bottom down with metal duct tape. It is fiberglass and not contained so on windy days i have found small amounts on my truck hood, dont think that is a goid thing long term being as i do work in my garage sometimes. I am removing it all this weekend and marking this up as experience (dont believe the reviews).
