Q:What tape do you recommend to use to tape the edges kraft papers to improve vapor barrier seal?
      by|Oct 2, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  Hello DavidL, Owens Corning installation instructions do not require the use of tape to maintain the integrity of a vapor retarder except where needed because of tears, holes, or bad mis-alignment of the vapor retarder. It is also only necessary to tape seams of two batts in one cavity when the vapor retarder is not touching or mated. Building tape such as Owens Corning Bild-R-Tape is suggested for this use. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:I have an older home that has 3x5 rafters. So the cavity depth is about 4.5". Would R21 be the best insulation there? What would the R value end up being if the insulation was compressed to 4.5"?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hello Dale, We would advise that you confirm your Local Building Codes for requirements related to R-value and vapor barriers. However, if you were to use R-21 in the 4.5" cavity you would obtain an approx. R-value of R-17. Thank you for your inquiry.

Got this to insulate the exterior walls in the attic I was finishing. Worked as expected and had no issues with packaging or shipping. I find the pink stuff to be softer to the touch than some brands, but cutting it is slightly more difficult than some since the kraft facing on the pink stuff isn't very stiff, but it's not really an issue.

          Expensive but worth it.
I use this type of insulation in all of my projects now - walls and ceilings. The finer-grained fibers are easier to cut and work with and they don't create as much dust as the traditional types of fiberglass. The higher R-value will keep you warmer and save you the extra cost in the long run. The vapor barrier is a good, heavy impregnated kraft paper. Great stuff! Although this product is advertised for use in 2x6 walls, my project in the photo was re-insulating an old extension that had a 2x6 ceiling joists and limited space for layering extra insulation. I used two layers, one above the joists (I ripped the vapor barrier off so it could breathe) and the second layer with the vapor barrier stapled to the joists. The extra R-value was very good to have in my limited space, and gave a good, tight final installation. The kraft paper was strong enough that no extra support was needed.

The edges of many of the R21 facing is delaminating, making it take more time to position and staple the edges. They need to work on quality control in that area

I used it in the cieling where the rafters were spaced on 24 inch centers. It worked out well.
