Q:How can I buy plants (hydrangea panniculata) now to plant outdoors after our last frost date (zone 7b) ?

Answer This Question

A:  Hello Barry -- Thanks for asking! We ship dormant shrubs from November-April. You can overwinter them by keeping the plants out of the elements by storing it inside your garage or home. Keep its soil moist until outside temperatures rise and your area is frost-free. Your average frost-free date can be found at this link: https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/ Then, plant, feed, and water your plant and you’ll be good to grow! As always, please feel free to reach out to us at any time with any questions or concerns. You can call us at 855-PW PLANT (855-797-5268), email us at helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com or chat with us online! We are happy to help! ~ Cori

A:  Hi there- thanks for asking! I would recommend waiting to prune your Pinky Winky hydrangea. It blooms on new wood and would benefit from a trim in late winter/early spring :) Please reach out to our team with any further questions at helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com

Q:What happens if this plant does not get enough cold to go dormant? I'm in 9b.

        Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for asking! Pinky Winky is hardy in zones 3-8. Hydrangeas won’t enter a dormancy period if not exposed to cold winters. Hydrangeas do not need dormancy in order to bloom in the spring and summer. In hotter climates, hydrangeas do best with some afternoon shade. It can be easily maintained as a smaller plant or trained into a small tree. Prune in late winter/early spring. Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid-summer. My plants just started to get leaves. So they are alive!!!! I can't give a full 5 stars yet. The plants I'm talking about in the picture are the "sticks" with the little green leaves, 3 of them.

This was my first time ordering a potted plant by mail. It arrived yesterday within the estimated delivery projection, with no transit damage or signs of heat stress. I wasn't sure what to expect of the plant's overall size and condition, but it looks perfect and beautiful. I hope to train it as a potted 'tree'. There are two main stems, and the bigger one is perfect for this purpose, nice and straight with lots of higher branching. I've always had good success with Proven Winner plants that I buy locally. Knowing I would be able to return this to my local HD (had there been any problems) was good impetus to try this mail order. I will have confidence to order more plant varieties this way, and I'm really happy this one was such a pleasant surprise! :)

              Looking Forward to Fall Flowers
I was interested in this Hydrangea for its unusual flowering and hardiness. It arrived well-packed with no broken branches or damaged leaves. Proven Winners has consistently shipped plants in perfect condition and with moist soil. They use a clear plastic bag with drawstring to keep moisture in the rootball and that sits in the pot, taped securely so that the drawstring is tightly cinched when it arrives. This plant has elongated, dark green leaves on woody stems. It is not a densely leafed plant at this point but it is only about 18" tall. The literature says it will bloom late summer/fall and while I do not expect flowers this year, I am hopeful that it will eventually be an outstanding shrub in our garden. Since pH of the soil does not affect flower color like other Hydrangea varieties, this should produce the pink and white blooms that make it unique regardless of where it is planted.

              gorgeous from the get go
I'm loving the hydrangea. It arrived quickly and it was already blooming g some. The pot was sturdy. The foliage was lush. The leaves are glossy and the plant has an overall healthy quality, which is great because sometimes when a plant is shipped you don't know what you're going to get. But this experience has been a good one. Neither of us has a green thumb, but we live hydrangeas, so we thought we'd give it a shot. This plant gave us a great start.

              Nice hydrangea
This plant arrived in a sturdy 4 foot tall box on a 95 degree day. It had nice air holes and the base/dirt was wrapped in plastic to prevent major spills. I took it it of the box immediately & was a bit disappointed that the 2 tallest branches were broken and there were a lot of brown blooms. I'm sure the specimens in the store look fresher, so I suggest going to choose your own. After removing it from the box i watered it a little & then planted it the next day. It's already bounced back some now that it's been in the ground for 2 weeks. I'll attach some photos. This is a very adaptable perennial that is very cold hardy, up to -40F. The blooms are now mostly white, with some light pink. As they age they are supposed to get a darker pink moving up, to create a two toned effect and then may turn mostly purple/red. Proven Winners is a great brand. They have good quality stuff. I've had wonderful luck with their roses, so I have faith that these hydrangeas will stay strong & healthy.

              Large and Already Blooming Plant
The hydrangea came packaged in a large box. The plant looked great when I took it out. You would never guess it had just been shipped. It was quite large and already had several blooms. I recommend watering it immediately because the soil was pretty dry by the time it arrived. I'm really impressed by how large and mature of a plant you get for the price.

Beautiful and very vibrant plant for sure
This hydrangea plant is one of the most beautiful I've seen in quite a while. The plant was nearly as tall as the container it was shipped in, and the blossoms are amazing. The plant seems very strong and durable. I'm just hoping it survives the Arizona desert heat better than I am. It already has nearly a 3 foot spread, and is over 4 feet tall. It could not be more beautiful. Highly recommended. This picture was taken the day it arrived, and I was not quite ready to plant it because the area needed prepping. A beauty to behold.

What a beautiful plant! It arrived in great condition, very healthy and blooming, too!
I just got my new Pinky Winky planted in my front yard today, and it's going to be a real showpiece! It is very healthy and looks awesome. I am always surprised to see how well Home Depot packages its plants, they arrive in great shape, not dried out, no dead limbs or leaves - I would expect a plant to suffer some damage in transit, but just look at my photos! One happy hydrangea!
