Questions & Answers

how do you fill this?

I bought this but the bird seed isn't staying in. How do you fill it? There's no instructions.
Asked by: Wendy
the roof lifts off and you fill it from the top.

Customer Reviews

Tin Jay Feeder is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from We Love This Feeder It is sturdy, stylish and the little birds in my backyard love it. I was tired of buying cheap plastic feeders that kept breaking and finally decided to spend alittle more for this higher quality feeder. Visitors complemented it and also purchased one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pretty at first but doesn't last well I bought this feeder 2 years ago & although it was really pretty at first, it started deteriorating very quickly. The wood & cedar shakes on the roof seemed to soak up rainwater like a sponge & eventually (after 2 years) completely rotted. It was also susceptible to squirrel attacks, as they chewed at the wooden feeding holes any time they arrived to find it empty or the peanuts they really wanted weren't right at the holes (who knows what they were thinking...) The little tray at the bottom, also tended to hold water & started to rot soon after I bought it. This week, after only 2 years of use, it fell apart (right after I filled it with seed), so now I am shopping for a new feeder. Sadly, I don't think I'll be buying another one of these.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks good initially but within a few months, you'll be replacing it We really liked the look of this feeder. We put it up and the birds went at it! But after a few months here in NJ, between rain in the summer and cold / snow in the winter, the thin wood warped / split easily, a couple 'shingles' on the roof came off and the base separated from the tower. Me being me, I used tie wraps at the bottom and top to hold the shape of the tower (the wood warped and the plastic / tin parts would easily pop out, spilling the seed). And with the base separating from the tower, I tried glueing the base back to the tower, but that didn't last. But because of the design of the cable, it holds the base to the tower when on the feeder, so that's OK. I was hoping I wouldn't have to babysit this feeder like this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cute, birds like it, but poor quality control My husband bought me a bird feeder as a Christmas gift that is very similar to this bird feeder. The birds love it and they will sit on the different pegs to eat. I wanted a new one because the squirrels had figured out a way to get to the bird feeder and chewed up the lower feeding holes. I had the old feeder for over a year and even with the destruction from the squirrels, it has held up really well. Based on my good experience with the first bird feeder, I got this one thinking it was the same manufacturer and they just upgraded it. Boy was I wrong. The new feeder is not the same quality or size. The upgrades from my old feeder are the sides and little pegs are metal. Visually cute, but does it attract more birds? No. The feeder is much smaller which means that I will have to refill the bird feeder much more often. Filling the bird feeder isn't the easiest because the top is narrow and if you have a large bag of bird feed it can be difficult to fill without spilling In addition, to the much smaller size, I received the bird feeder damaged. It wasn't shipping damage, but the top support bar was never nailed into the support. I fixed it with glue and a nail, but that is just sloppy quality control. Also, several areas of the cedar was marred, scratched, or gouged. I am very disappointed in the bird feeder and cannot recommend it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Way over priced I bought this primarily to give shelled peanuts to Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Chickadees, Titmouse, and Cardinals. The larger birds could not land on this comfortably at all, and the nuts get stuck in the housing. When the weather is wet, the seeds get wet and the peanut start to rot or the sunflower seeds start to sprout. I finally found a wire feeder that works extremely well. Don't buy this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Feed the birds This is a great bird feeder with a few layers of feeding stalls. The birds will not be able to resist the natural looking beauty in this bird feeder. You can place this feeder just about anywhere in your yard and mix it with any feeders that you already have layed out. You can't go wrong with this itlem. And your birds will definitely appreciate it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The feeder is well made and looks really nice. Sturdy... The feeder is well made and looks really nice. Sturdy cable should have no problem supporting birds and the seeds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, a fair squirrel blocker Although most of this feeder is wood - a known 'gnaw-able' for squirrels - this seems to be holding up well. The feeding tube is metal, so it's apparently not as easy to get to as I had feared. The feeder is quite cute, easy to fill and clean, and looks great in the garden.
