Product Overview

  • In-Ground Post Decay Protection for posts in soil or concrete
  • Simple installation and Post Longevity increased by 250%
  • Pole Barn, Deck, Fence, Pergola, Mailbox, any post-foundation job
For 18 years, Post Protector has provided simple, slide-on ‘barrier’ protection for in-ground posts. It works in conjunction with the chemical preservative as an important additional layer of protection against soil-dwelling and atmospheric decay fungi and insect infestation. It’s first important to understand decay. Many believe that moisture CAUSES decay. Moisture is not the cause of decay but is one of (3) conditions needed for decay to occur. The conditions: (1) Moisture, (2) Oxygen and (3) Suitable temperature. These conditions enable the soil-dwelling or atmospheric decay fungi, as well as termites & other subterranean insects, to feed on the wood fiber. So the Decay/Degradation of ground-contact wood is not CAUSED by moisture but by the action of wood destroying organisms feeding on the wood. The ‘chemical preservatives’ protection strategy is to ‘poison’ the wood fiber, rendering it an unsuitable food source for the wood destroying organisms. The downside to that approach is that all chemical preservatives eventually lose resistance to decay and insect infestation. Post Protector becomes the perfect complement to the pressure treated (or cedar) post by simply providing a physical "barrier" isolating the post so the wood-destroying organisms have NO access to the post.
  • Simple slide-on installation
  • Perfect for both Pro and DIY
  • Speed, affordability, strength of a direct burial post while wood destroying organisms have no post access
  • HDPE lightweight, flexible and strong; 449 years of in-ground service life
  • Integral drainage feature
  • Minimizes chemical leaching into the environment
  • Attractive appearance-rich clay tone color with wood grain texture
  • Easily trims to desired height
  • Stronger, faster and less expensive than concrete pier and bracket method
  • Weed-eater protection
  • Can also be used to create a removable in-ground post
  • Toll free tech-line for expert product information/installation assistance

Questions & Answers

Any reason these couldn't be set in concrete?

Want to do cedar 4X4 garden fence but have sandy soil and need more strength on corner posts. If set in concrete, would you seal top edge with silicon? Leave bottom holes open and below concrete level or could I completely seal these top and bottom.
Asked by: GardenD
You could but if you leave open at the bottom for some drainage. Otherwise the post will rot because it sits in standing water. Other things to think about: It is best to have 1/3 of the post below ground and 2/3 above ground. For added strength you could do 1/2 below and 1/2 above. Also for a corner and end post use a 6"x6" or for a long run even an 8"x8". As they are much stronger and will last longer.

how easy is it to remove a post from the protector?

I want to use the post protector to put a post in the ground for a gate and then remove the post and put it back in. This may happen frequently during camping season. Was thinking of putting it in concrete with rocks in bottom of hole for draining. Would the post protector allow that to happen? What damage to the post and protector might occur?
Asked by: Wade
I have not tried this but a friend installed the same way with the thought of being able to remove them. If you do not put the screws in this should be possible. As the post shrinks after it drys out it should be easier to remove. A poor mans bollard. If done often you might wear out the composite of the protector.

What experience do you have with these?

I have CCA treated 4"x4" fence posts in concrete that have failed after 17 years. I have no idea how long the "new" treated posts will last. Is there any evidence these sleeves will help my new ACQ, CA-B or CA-C treated fence posts to last that long? What I've read implies the sleeves are closed on the bottom. Is that true?
Asked by: Hucfinn
wwwdotpostprotectordotcom has all the information or call the manufacturer to discuss.

If the post opening is 3.75 in. and the post is 3.5 x 3.5,, am concerned/confused about the excess space when the post is inserted. Do I shim or...?

Asked by: LJ
I ran some exterior caulking over the gap to keep water from enter. Suggest using a clear caulk. You might have to reapply the caulk if the post shrink after they dry out.

Customer Reviews

4 in. x 4 in. x 42 in. In-ground Post Decay Protection is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product and Excellent Service I've used these post protectors before building a fence around our organic garden. Didn't want the pressure treated wood to leach into the garden. I also sealed around the tops with 100% silicone. I did have a problem with the order, wrong size sent. I called Home Depot customer service and they got Ken from Post Protectors on to correct. Everyone was very helpful and took care of the mistake right away. This is why I gave them such a good review. Anyone can make a mistake but it's how you handle it that makes a difference. They did just that, Thanks Everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from don't put wood posts in the ground without these I build a lot of pole barns. The weak point of any pole barn is the wood in the ground. Doesn't matter if the wood is treated or not, eventually it rots. I used to pour concrete around the posts, but if any moisture gets between the concrete and the post, it can rot even faster. The post can shrink allowing moisture in the gap between the wood and the concrete. Post Protectors eliminate ALL contact with the soil. Also, there are molded ridges in the product for uplift protection. No more drilling through the posts to insert rebar. I like that there is a protector for just about any square pole. Unfortunately Home Depot doesn't yet carry all of the ones available. If you use laminated poles, they're available. I like to buy from Home Depot for the free delivery when I can. If you want lumber to last, whether you are building a fence or a pole building, start with these.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install I won't know how I feel about the product for about 10 years, which is why I gave this a "good" rating and wasn't sure about recommending it--recommendation is based on installation and promise of success. Easy to install--the holes have to be deep, which was a bit tricky, since a post-hole digger must splay out at the top to pick up soil. Other than that, all went well. I did not use the screws as I want to be able to remove the posts. I did notice on some (I bought 4) that the thickness of the plastic was uneven: thicker at one end and thinner at another of the same side. No biggie, but might speak to a later quality issue. I am a (handy) woman in her 60s, and if I can install them easily, so can almost anybody.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I have used this product before for my mailbox post and decided to use it for the bird feeder pole because of the ease of replacing a damaged pole and the extended life it offers to the post. This post protector has a bottom with holes along the vertical edge so water drains out. Without a bottom the wood post would have a shortened life. This product also has rippled edges so water can drain more easily down the sides of the pole and out the drain holes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't build a pole building without them I use these all the time anymore as a builder of custom barns. Even with pressure treated lumber, rot is inevitable. This virtually eliminates it. I just wish Home Depot carried these protectors in other sizes. Fortunately, other sizes are available direct from the manufacturer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best solution !! Great product......Can be used in any post/fence application for guaranteed DRY posts. Post Protector sleeves and isolated the post from any moisture, chemicals in soil or any seasonal natural run-off.....Making the wooden post completely isolated and dry.............extending the life of the post exponentially in the process. No doubt, I would recommend Post Protector to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fit the Bill I needed something to protect wood posts that where going into the ground next to a lake. So, the underground parts would be in and out of water as the lake rises and falls over the year. These sleeves will be perfect for keeping the water off of the posts. They were easy to use and I anticipate they will protect my posts for many years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works great I would recommend this to anyone that will be installing post in the ground. they are simple to install and add extra life to the post. I sealed the top of the post protector to prevent rain water from getting into it. mine are installed out in the open so I felt it was needed.
