Q:Can semi trans color be mixed with clear in order to achieve a lighter finished coloe?

Answer This Question

A:  If you are looking for a lighter Tahoma Brown, which is a semi-transparent, then you should consider Tamarack Brown, which is a transparent. Typically, we recommend that you use Preserva Wood as it comes in the can, without any modifications.

Q:What is the best way to stir this before application? I had to stir my 1 gallons like crazy before applying, not sure the best way to do a 5 gallon. Thanks!

A:  There was so much stain on the bottom of the 5 gallon and the one gallons. We used a stir stick, and a sharpened wood stick. I stirred for the recommended 15 minutes and everytime refill the sprayer or my tray I stirred and stirred. Still has goopey stain on the bottom. I honestly was never able to get it to completely mix in. But it didn't change the application. The color is amazing. I do feel like the sprayer was too light and I did use a roller and it applied perfectly with a 4 inch roller. Rich and dark with hints of red. Lovely

A:  The best way to stir your stain before application is with a paint stick. They come in gallon and 5 gallon sizes. Just enter "paint stick" in the HomeDepot.com search field. Since our penetrating stain is thin, stir all pigment on the bottom of the can before and during use.

Q:Can this be applied with a sprayer?

        Answer This Question

A:  If you are applying the stain to a fence, then a sprayer is a great tool for staining a fence. We do not recommend a sprayer for a deck because it applies too much stain and could cause you to over-apply. For fence staining, we recommend the pump sprayer, which is available at Home Depot in the same bay where our stain is located. You should also invest in a good brush, as well as a quart of mineral spirits for clean up. Mix the stain well before adding it to the pump sprayer, and mix the stain each time you add it. Do not stain when there is a breeze, as the stain will carry on the wind. After you spray each section of fence, go back and brush out any runs, or areas that appear uneven. You can use the mineral spirits to clean the brush, as well as the pump sprayer, when you are done.

            Q:Is it mold-resistant? Mildew-resistant? Both?

            Answer This Question

A:  Preserva Wood contains a biocide that protects the natural oils and resins in our product from attack by mold, mildew and fungi. Preserva Wood does not contain a chemical that prevents mold and mildew from growing on the surface of your wood. Only a registered pesticide can make that claim.

                  Love this stain
Originally tried a water based stain from the other tool store but color and quality was off and after numerous attempts to fix, decided to try an oil based stain. I researched and checked out forums online and decided on Preserva. The Tahoma color is beautiful but not really like what it shows online in our case, I think it’s because our new fencing had a yellow tone to begin with. Only need to apply one coat and coverage is great. We painted in May and its still shape considering heat, sun and rain in Swfl. Will update in a year or so. My only con is the coverage per gallon stated under product description. We had 15 panels of 6’x8’ wood panels to stain front and back so we ordered a 5 gallon, then additional 3 gallons thinking that would be more than enough and could also stain outdoor furniture with leftover. But we still need one more gallon. I would’ve been better off ordering two 5 gallon buckets and it would’ve cost just a few dollars more. So I’ll know for next time we have to apply. Still highly recommend this line though.

                    Quality stain
I applied this stain ~9 months ago, August of 2019. I live in the pacific northwest, so I am looking for something that can stand up to a lot of moisture. Sun and heat are a non-issue here. Ease of application is going to vary based on the quality of the wood that you are applying this to. My girlfriend used cheap wood for her fence, so it was very porous, which means it took a lot of stain to complete. I think I went through 8 gallons on a relatively smallish side yard and backyard. 6 foot fence, and maybe 60 feet of fencing front, and 40 feet of fencing on the back. I don't blame the product for having to use so much, I blame the wood. Once it was on, it was a lot darker than I anticipated based on the color indicated on the can. I didn't mind, but perhaps I would have gotten one shade lighter. Again, not disappointed, just did not anticipate. The shade WILL lighten over time, but slowly and gradually. Applied August of 2019 with a paintbrush. The stain held up great through the rainy fall and winters that we have. Come Spring it started becoming apparent that it was time for a fresh coat, as there are some lighter spots on the fence where the product is starting to thin out. The can recommends reapplying every 6 months, but once a year is more realistic for my environment (and budget). I will try to update this review with current pictures. Overall very happy with the product, and I will be using again this year for the annual coat.

Great color! I do think it looks better brushed on than sprayed. We did both. Sprayed seems to have more of an aged look. Where brushed looks newer and more fresh. Both look great though! The odor isn’t tremendous either. Great product!

The wood stain was very easy to apply to our deck. Once dried the deck had a beautiful stain.
