Hi Nathan. The edging pieces connect by using the sliding connection system. There are channels at the top and bottom of each piece that will slide together to adjoin them. You do not need to stack and overlap the holes, although you can if you would like.
The anchoring spikes in the aluminum edging kit are steel, so they should withstand cold weather. As with any landscaping, you may need to perform seasonal maintenance of pushing some of the spikes back into the ground, as the freeze/thaw can sometimes shift the spikes with the ground. This happens much less frequently with metal spikes and aluminum edging (since they are installed under the ground), compared to plastic above-ground edgings.
Thank you for your question. The aluminum edging can be bent between tabs to a 90-degree angle without breaking. The edging is rigid, but is flexible enough to make corners as needed. You can also form corners with the edging by cutting it and installing the cut ends in the angle you need. Either way should work.
