Hello, you 3 stringers for 48'' tread. Thanks

Is the 48" tread required to have a center stringer? Is there a way to drill through the end of the tread to attach to wood stringer on side?
    ByMay 25, 2026
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Hello, The 48" step (13943) is designed to be supported from below. It is pre-drilled for Pylex steel stringers 1 to 7 steps (13901 to 13907). It cannot be attached to a wooden stringer from the side, only from below. Thanks

We replaced an old rotten wood back porch/stairs with the metal stringers and steps from pylex. Reasons for choosing this: hope to never have to re-do it in our lifetime and to eliminate carpenter bee problem. Originally planned to use trex for steps but when I calculated cost of trex vs. pylex, they were the same. Both will be hot in summer to walk on, both slippery in rain. So I’m really glad we went with metal. These steps are really nice and sturdy, well made. The shipping however was a bit of a nightmare: I ordered 2 extra because I read in another review they arrived dented. Sure enough, out of 15 steps 4 were bent up significantly. They are packaged in cellophane with thin cardboard at ends. Now granted, fedex shipped these in 4 separate orders due to heavy weight, managed to lose it so that it arrived about 2 wks late, with obvious wear and tear to the bundles. I also had to get home depot involved in tracking the lost stairs, which they were very helpful! So I reordered 4 more, had them shipped to my local Home Depot, they were on time and all in perfect condition. So I highly recommend you ship and pick up at your local store instead of home delivery with these. They are made to fit the metal stringer, which they fit like a glove. All screw holes line up perfectly. Because of the height we were working with (13 steps) we had to put a step on top/bottom/ middle for spacing and attach the stringer to the second story landing. Then screw on rest of stairs from topside/ this is opposite from what pylex recommends. Had to buy a little metric socket wrench to tighten the bolts/nuts which are included. Was easier for small female hands to thread bolts rather than husbands larger hands. Once I got the hang of it, I cranked them out in good time but it did take 1 day to get 13 steps attached. I touched up a couple bolts with black nail polish to prevent rusting-worked well. We also attached metal handrail, drilled holes in steps with metal drill bit and bolted from underside, following pylex recommendations for attaching it. So all in all- we are super happy with these metal stairs and steps. The pylex system is very nice and heavy duty- industrial quality. Very sturdy, looks modern and clean. Really glad we went with this product, turned out really nice for just 2 retirees doing all of it.

Stairs look great. I bought six, 6 foot treads for my front porch, joined 2 together to make 12 foot treads. They’re sturdy and strong… just waiting to make sure they’re not slippery when there’s ice.

With these plus the steel stringers I got an all metal staircase at a 1/10 the cost of anything comparable. I think this was even less expensive than composite decking and wood stringers. System goes up quickly, however the bolts on the bottom are VERY finicky to install. I do wish there was a stainless option. Also the packaging could be much better, several arrived very beat up.

I ordered these (and Pylex steel stringers) to replace old and poorly installed wooden steps from the Bilco door into the basement. Admittedly it was a challenge for the installer, as he had to start at the bottom working upside down on the lower stairs, then flip the stringers over to work from the top down. With that said, it turned out terrific--these steps are solid

We are very pleased with this brand of powder coated stair treads & the same brand of steel stair stringers we also purchased from Home Depot. Great quality. We were looking for an alternative to wood that rots within a few years. The only complaint is the packaging. Two of the five treads we received are dented on the ends where they were apparently dropped. Disappointing but we had no time to return them for replacements. These need better packaging on the ends.
