About This Product

Optilumen RKS Universal Fluorescent Fixture Retrofit Kit. Easily converts most all your existing residential and commercial 4 and 8 foot T5, T8 and T12 linear fluorescent light fixtures into an integrated LED light fixture. This retrofit kit works with the earliest to the latest versions of ceiling mount, four-foot and eight foot fluorescent light fixtures, regardless of the style, manufacturer or existing ballast type including linear high-bay, strip or wrap fixtures and even chain suspended shop lights. Since the retrofit kit contains the LED driver, there is no guess work to determine if it is compatible with your existing fixtures' magnetic or electronic ballast. Super simple installation in 3 easy steps: 1). Remove existing bulbs and ballast. 2). Attach magnetically backed driver and connect to AC power source. 3). Attach magnetically-backed LED strips and quick connect to Y-harness. If your fixture isn't steel, no worries, the kit is pre-drilled and comes with mounting screws. The fixture is DLC listed to qualify for commercial lighting rebates and special incentives in certain regional areas.

This is a excellent energy efficient replacement for a 48 inch fluorescent under-counter light that I had in my kitchen. The old light was starting to buzz and needed replacing. It was very easy to remove the old transformer box and connect the new transformer with the enclosed wire nuts. The new transformer has a magnetic strip on the bottom to attach to the old wiring box. Then connect the two LED light strips to the new transformer with push connectors, the strips also had magnetic strips to attach to the old frame. Put on the old light cover and you’re done. It took 10 minutes or less to complete the install. The new light is very bright, has no bulbs to replace, no buzzing sound, and is energy efficient.

Wow, this makes such an improvement! They are packaged impressively well so there is almost zero chance of them arriving damaged. When it came to installing we were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to do. Strong magnets hold the light strips and the LED driver box in place. And once done they are BRIGHT! Replacing the cover helped to diffuse the brightness a bit. We only had two that needed to be replaced - one located in the pantry and another in the garage. It's pretty amazing what we can see now :)

The kit came quickly and was well packaged with no damage. Due to the corona virus issues I have not yet been able to install it in my old light fixture. It should make the old fixture usable again as the old lamps are getting very difficult to obtain. It appears that the good instructions that were included will make the retrofit easy. I am looking forward to have better lighting in my shop.

The RKS 2440 at 4000k give you 2 4ft LED replacement lights; this is an excellent idea, to replace the fluorescent fixture bulbs to the new technology without taking everything off and replacing it. Better yet no tools needed to do it. There were no instructions inside, they were on the outside of the box but it was much better just to watch the professional video provided by the manufacturer on the installation process. They were easy to change, the LEDs stay put right away due to their magnet and the wiring is also as easy. The ballast also has two magnets so there is no need to screw on to the fixture. The LED strips are very bright at 5900 lumens and with the 4000k cool white it is very attractive and much brighter than before. The strips measure 43 ¼ long and 10/16 wide. Overall it is a great idea and well made.

The Optilumen 4 foot retrofit kit is easy to install and very bright. The kit installs magnetically without any tools. The LED strips and driver are held magnetically to the steel fixture enclosure. If your fixture isn't steel, or you just want the added security of mechanical fasteners, screws are included with the kit. Each kit is bright enough to replace four, 4 foot bulbs with just two LED strips. The color is great and the LEDs run cooler than fluorescent and are also totally silent.

This is the RKS 2440 LED retrofit kit. It’s intended to convert any standard T5, T8 or T12 fluorescent fixture to an integrated LED fixture. The amazing thing is how easy they have made the process—even if you have to work over your head. Both the replacement driver and the strips are magnetic. For the driver, the magnets hold it in place while you fasten it with screws. Very clever. The LED strips just stick to the metal ballast cover or fixture body. Photo 1 shows you what you get in the box (2 LED strips on a metal and magnetic backing, LED driver with Y harness attached, package of screws, and warning label saying the fixture has been modified). To install it (which only takes a few minutes, like Optilumen claims), you remove the bulbs, ballast cover, ballast and sockets (you can actually leave the ballast and sockets in place if you don’t want to take the time to remove them—this is what I did), mount the LED driver (and of course connect the line power wires, see Photo 2), route the Y harness (Photo 3), put back the ballast cover, stick on the LED strips (Photo 4) and plug them into the Y harness (Photo 5). Done (well, you should stick on the modification label too). Exceedingly simple. And the results are incredible. I installed the kit on a 2-lamp shop light. The results are 5900 lumens at 4000K. Bright doesn’t begin to describe it. Photo 6 shows the converted fixture on. I have another T8 fixture nearby so I can readily tell the difference—the converted fixture is much, much brighter than the fluorescent one. Things to note: (1) The holes in the LED strips are for mounting when you don’t have a metal fixture (there are four screws provided, but two are used for securing the LED driver, so I’m not sure what they intend for the remaining two—you’d need four if you're using screws to secure the LED strips, however, maybe you’re supposed to provide your own screws for securing the driver and use these four for mounting the strips??? Either way, not a bid deal.). (2) This kit, is NOT dimmable. Optilumen sells an optional dimming driver. (3) This particular kit is rated to replace a 4-lamp fixture. I used it to modify a 2-lamp fixture and it worked just fine. (4) There is a slight delay before the LEDs comes on after turning on the switch (lots of LEDs exhibit this behavior). From what I understand, this is actually a good thing—it’s sort of a “soft start” for the electronics so they don’t experience a current surge, which can shorten their life. I didn’t take any stars off for this, even if it is slightly annoying. Overall, I think this is a great conversion kit and highly recommend it. It comes with a 7-year warranty and is available in either 4000K or 5000K color temperatures.

EZ install and decent output but there are better choices. I love the concept….take down your old T8 fluorescents and convert them to high output LED. Over the last year or so I have test a good number of LED shop light fixtures (see video below). This kit makes conversion of your fluorescent fixtures easy. In my case just 15 minutes and the hardest part was taking the light off the ceiling. What holds this RKS retrofit kit back is the price. At $55 (at the time of this review) you can buy a whole LED fixture that has better output for less money. HD sells several better options like the commercial electric (search 309921827 on HD website), which is $15 cheaper, has better output, and more features. Or for a bare bones model the Metalux (305858757) offers about the same output for just $31. While this conversion kit will be better than your old tube lights (see output photo), the value just isn’t there.

I tell ya what, if your looking for the easiest way to change any fluorescent fixture to LED this is it!! Literally you remove all the crap from the fixture ( ballast, sockets, wires). Replace all that with the parts that come in the box. It comes with screws to mount the LED driver ( ballast replacement) but that little suckered has a magnet so you don't even need them. The light strips have magnets also so Literally you stick on the driver then stick on strips, plug in the ends, make up power and put cover on. With 4000k its bright enough for a garage or laundry room, maybe kitchen. I'm happy with it!

Previously reviewed an Optilumen kit rated at 5000K (kelvin scale) and gave it a 'rave' review. This kit: an OPTILUMEN RKS 4 ft. 118-Watt Equivalent Integrated LED White Strip Retrofit Kit is rated at 4000K and has the same great features as the 5K but with a 'warmer white' light. The replacement of older fluorescent lamps is made EASY by simply removing the lamps from their sockets, removing the old ballast from the troffer and attaching the Optilumen magnetic LEDs to the troffer. The LED ballast is also magnetic AND uses (included) pig-tail quick connects to insert into the LEDs. The ballast's pig-tail simply attaches to the house wiring (where you disconnected the fluorescent ballast). It is THAT easy; approximately 10 minutes to install. If you have a project where you do not want tp (or can not) remove the old troffer unit you will LOVE this solution!.
