Awesome planer! I used it to make a few cutting boards out of walnut and cherry and it was more than powerful enough to cut through the board. Left a nice smooth surface after. The measuring guage on the side is precise right on out of the box. Its a great piece of equiptment to have and im excited to use it for upcoming projects.

    Excellent product/value.
This is very impressive product - especially considering the small, portable footprint. Very easy set up - I mounted it to a work table, plugged it in and it was ready to go. Set the height and ran a test on a 30 year old 2x6x48 piece of wood that came out of a barn and it came out looking better than new - nice smooth surface and good grain. The Ryobi planar is very solid. There is was no vibration during operation and it fed continuous with no binding. Excellent product and excellent value - whether you need a portable unit or a shop unit.

I have tested and used this RYOBI 15 Amp 12-1/2 in. Corded Thickness Planer with Planer Knives, Knife Removal Tool, Hex Key and Dust Hood model AP1306 for several hours and I am 100% satisfied with the construction and performance of this planer! It looks great and is not too heavy. I am using it to plane old, weathered, cracked and warped deck boards and I am surprised at how well this item has performed for me. It is saving me a lot of time, work and money. This item will pay itself off quickly with the amount of money saved from buying all new boards, plus it means less material to be recycled & saved from the landfill. The manual is easy to read and offers a wealth of info to the consumer. I never used a planer and this was simple to use and I felt safe operating it. There is a bit of a learning curve but you learn quickly. It was easy to put on the depth adjustment crank aka handle and the dust hood. The rubber cover for the handle bolt comes off at times from vibration as does the magnets. The switch key is a nice safety feature but I would prefer it be made of something more durable than plastic. With that said those are my only suggestions for this model. The fold up/support tables are easy to adjust and do a great job of supporting wood (longer pieces may need additional support to reduce sniping). I did not use anything to support my 16 ft long deck boards as I wanted to really test this unit as it is out of the box and I had very minimal snipe (very impressive). The handle operates smoothly and the raising/lowering of the blade is smooth as well. The hand grip on the crank offers great grip even with wet/sweaty hands. The 4 guide posts are precision machined and operate extremely smooth. The power cord is thick and well insulated. I really like the depth of the metal handles with rubber guard, they don't hurt my hands when carrying the planer. The spinning bar on top allows me to place long boards on it after the first pass to send it back for a second pass if needed, I like that as it cuts down on carrying every piece (don't lift or carry the planer with the center spinning bar as you might damage the planer). This is definitely one of the best things I got for myself. I wish I got one sooner! Not only do I recommend it, I will get one for a relative for Christmas! This is an easy 5 star item! Thank you for taking the time to read my review and to see my photos and video that shows you this item in detail and in action for yourself.

      Solid where it counts
The planer arrived boxed in great condition. Assembly consists of hand screwing two screws for the dust manifold, clicking the two blade removal magnets in their holders, and dropping the adjust knob on to the stem. As far as bench top planers go this exceeded my expectations for build quality. Feed and exit ramps are extremely solid, barely deflecting only after I put most of my 190lb weight onto one side. As you can see in the photos the ramps are reinforced. If, for whatever reason, the ramps were out of level there are adjustment bolts with locking nuts to fix that. As a side note I'm a big fan of safety so the yellow lockout "key" is awesome. The planer is rated for a maximum thickness of 6-1/8" and minimum of 5/16" however the blades will go down to a touch less than 2/32". The user manual recommends no planning anything smaller than 3/4" wide and shorter than 14" long, but with a jig it's easy enough to get around that. My purpose for getting the planer was to size down and smooth dimensional lumber to make lower cost DIY projects and for that this fits my bill. The biggest piece of dimensional lumber I plan to put through the planer would be a 2x12 and a 12-1/2" planer is overkill so getting a 13" planer for more money would feel silly. I have a project coming up this week involving some 2x6's and I'll report back on how it performs.

This RYOBI thickness planer is a must-have for wood workers who demand precision for their projects. It is heavy - almost 75 pounds! Avoid the temptation to use the bar across the top of the planer. Instead, use the two handles built into the top/sides, especially when removing it from the box. (See photo.) In addition to depending on the weight for stability, there are bolt holes in the bottom to secure the planer to a workbench. There is no special wiring required. The power cord ends in a standard grounded plug. (You do need a circuit for the 15-amp motor.) It came with all the pieces to use it after taking it out of the box, including a dust cover.

Planer arrived well-boxed and well-protected. Assembly is simple; attach height adjustment knob and vacuum output diverter. T-handle Allen wrench snaps into a holder so it is always handy for removing blade cover, vacuum diverter, knob, etc. Also, has snap-in places for two magnets used to change the blades. On-off switch has a safety feature where the yellow insert has to be in place to run. Planer head holds two blades that comes installed. Use a "square" to level the input and output tables to achieve a flat cut. It is a 15 amp motor so it needs a 20 amp circuit; ensure you have plenty of power and I would not use an extension cord. Attached is a video of it running. We are using it for our remodel projects to precisely fit custom trim. It is infinitely adjustable within the adjustment range. It weighs 60 or so lbs, so a two-man lift. It does a great job of smoothly planing. I used to work at a commercial planer manufacturer, so this is a very nice residential model.

RYOBI 15 Amp 12-1/2 in. Corded Thickness Planer with Planer Knives, Knife Removal Tool, Hex Key and Dust Hood I am really surprised at how quiet this planer is i mean don’t get me wrong it’s loud but not so loud that you can’t hear yourself think. I used a piece of scrap wood as a test piece in the video and wow it came out as smooth as glass. There was a bit if snipe at the front end but i may have caused that from the way i loaded into the machine while holding a camera. I think it would still be best to leave your work pieces extra long and cut them to length afterwards. The planer came with a tool to change out the cutting blades and two magnets to use during that process. The weight is listed as somewhere near 70lbs but it doesn’t seem that heavy to me. I can move it around for now then attach it to a base later on. The planer is pretty compact and you can fold its tables up and out of the way if you’re tight for space in your work area. You’ll have to remove the exhaust port to put up the out feed table but its only two screws so not that big of a deal. I would definitely recommend this item and I hope to get many years of service from it.

My first planer 40 yrs ago was a Ryobi AP-10, and it was great, so is this one. Smooth does a good job.
                      Almost a great product
This planer has helped me in my wood shop. It does work as advertised. The one thing that I wish could be different is the very cheap tray bed under the knives. I ran one board of 8/4 walnut through it and when it came out of the planer, I had four dents in the metal. Tool manufacturers need to realize that you can’t be cheap when making a tool like this.

Went looking for a planer on a budget, found a cheap planer. Have tried everything to get this planer to work properly, but it continues to severely snipe board ends, gouge wood, and kick back. I’m certainly no expert woodworker but I’ve done everything one would typically do to ensure this planer has the best operation and it simply fails to provide good results. I’d say spend more and get the dewalt. Fortunately my local HD is willing to exchange.

                            Solid buy
So far this has performed very well and produced great results. I have run through a couple dozen old pallet boards, really aged gnarly things. Half of them turned out to be lovely oak pieces, and the pine boards have a fantastic orange grain from the weathering. From gray uneven splintery and even warped to smooth beautiful boards with character you can't just buy. My only possible concern is how well it will stand the test of time, but I buy this brand because historically things hold up and if there is an issue they take care of it. I would say it doesn't sound too powerful so don't try to plane too much at once. I took some of these boards through 2 dozen passes just a bit at a time trying to make sure I flipped and rotated and got the uneven parts out without losing more thickness than needed, but even then you can hear the load the motor is under and these were only 6" wide and at most 3/4" thick. I really question a 3" thick 12" wide board making it through because I doubt the self feed will move that weight and the motor may strain out on that much cutting. But despite what it says it can do technically let's face it, this is intro level equipment, and for that it's done good so far.

                              Great Product
I have been a casual woodworker for a number of years and have gradually acquired different tools. I have a number of Ryobi products, including a drill, sander, brad nailer, table saw and now the Ryobi Planer! The product is attractive, given its Ryobi green color. Out of the box, the instructions are simple and took very little time to set up. After a little adjustment with my first piece of wood, the planer performed extremely well, providing a very nice finish quality. A little finish sanding and was ready for painting. For the casual woodworker, I would definitely recommend this Ryobi product!
