replacement for an 18 year old gas trimmer
Just purchased this today as a replacement for an 18-year-old gas trimmer. I have a quarter-acre property so not much trimming to be done usually. The gas trimmer was always a little heavy and sometimes awkward to use especially when edging along driveways and along the street. One of the features I like about this trimmer is the fact that I can rotate the head to achieve a nice clean edge along a given path. The other feature I like is the fact that there are two modes to help with battery power conservation, a high and low setting. The low setting can be used for general trimming of grass when not much power is needed and the high setting can be used for thicker, taller weeds. After I assembled the trimmer (yes, some assembly is required) I took it out into the back part of my yard which had become overgrown with some small trees that had come up. Some of those trees were about a 1/4 inch in diameter. I didn't put the battery on the charger as recommended but instead went right out to try it. The battery had about a quarter charge at that point. As you can see from the pictures below I was able to cut down the small trees with ease and used the trimmer to do some other trimming in the yard for about 5 minutes before the battery died. Again I didn't previously charge it. So far I'm very happy with the purchase and looking forward to seeing how it performs on a full charge. At this point, I would highly recommend this trimmer as it is light-weight, easy to use, comes with a battery and charger, and can also be used as an edger.

          Guard broke
Great tool, spool wrapped up a lot. The three screws holding the guard on all snapped off. Now lost its purpose for me.

Autofeed on this thing does not work
I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing. Seems this is a common problem. Basically the line gets pulled to tight inside the spool and gets solidly wedged in place. I've tried the line it came with as well as other line I already had. I tried winding tight and orderly as well as loose. Nothing makes a difference. Whenever I free up the line, it will auto feed one or two more times before it jams right up again. I've had other auto feed trimmers that didn't have this problem, so I know it CAN be done well. Other than than I like the easy to flip head with the wheel. It's plenty strong, and it gets pretty good battery life. I just end up spending half the time untangling trimmer line.

              It’s good when it works
This is my second Ryobi edger. They both broke off in the same area. Underneath where the line goes I will call it a guard it’s neon green it keeps the line from tangling ...welll two of these broke I don’t see it as a part to buy and I’m not about to buy ANOTHER one. I don’t think I’m too hard on edging the lawn. I don’t like it but when it worked it was cool. I have several Ryobi products.

Works good, whole package together made for good deal. First one, the line cutter broke off within 3 minutes. But repackaged, took back to HD, told what happened, they refunded that purchase and I went into store and bought another one, it has worked great. Another advantage of buying from HD, Would have had to wait for 3 weeks to get replacement part. Only reason i gave 4 stars, little heavier than the Ryobi we have been using for last 4 years

I have used this product fir 24 hours, with the trim line that came in the unit. I have used both the edging and trimming settings. Edging took a little to get used to but once I did it was a breeze and very effective. (see images) Using the switch to flip between the two settings only seems to work to go to the edging setting. I have to pick it up and mess with it to get it back to trimmer, and when I do and the unit is rotating, I can hear specs of dirt grinding in between - and keep in mind this is after just maybe 2 hours of use. While weed eating, the trim line has, on more than one occasions 1) broken down to less than 1/2 inch and not extended out due to being twisted inside the spool (no image) and 2) extended, not auto cut and get caught up on the rotating motor! (see image) I was able the yank it out the first time, but I can't get it out the second time so, after about 4 hours of use, I will be returning it.

                  Replacement for previous Ryobi Hybrid
Easy to assemble. 4 out of 5 stars only because it appears that a 2nd grade child assembled the spool that it came with!!
