All drill bits (Other than special bits made custom for a specific purpose in industry) are made of carbon steel, sometimes known as 'tool steel' or 'high speed steel'. The problem is than there is no set standard for quality in consumer bits, and the quality of the steel itself can vary wildly. A cheap drill bit might be dulled by one use in drilling a hard material, while a top quality bit might go on for dozens of uses before it needs re-sharpening. The coatings do help prolong the usefulness of the bit but a coating may be put on a very poor quality bit, so once the coating is worn off, the bit may become nearly useless..
